Here is my issue with all of this.  First, I'm all for getting into a little sparring session with China.  They're a terrible government (don't tell their stan @red viking).  But, the 75 other countries would've come to the table to negotiate without this spectacle.  And that is exactly what this is.  It's irresponsible and is only being done to feed one person's ego.

I don't know how to quantify it, but how about stolen IP from META to make ChatCCP?

China is corrupt, they are not a free/fair trading partner.

They do only charge 2.2 effective tax rate, but they do a LOT of underhanded things.

China doesn't have a massive tariff regime across the board.  China has specifically targeted certain goods at certain times, or various nations for specific purposes; you know, like a normal, smart plan for achieving ends, targeting and surgical.  Nothing like what Trump and the USA just did (and rescinded) which we can call the "shotgun to the face" method.  Countries will not isolate China because they provide a ready source of cheap goods.

Not a dead cat bounce. This was performing CPR on the cat. A dead cat bounce is when the market hits a low and bounces back a bit before heading lower again. This movement higher is because something fundamentally changed. Very different.

OK. Maybe their practices are predatory. Well, I don't agree with how he's done this. I think he could have been more effective by not trying to bully them. They need to save face now, and so does Trump. Both of these factors make it MUCH more difficult to negotiate a fair deal w/ them. 

I think he still has 10% tariffs on the rest of the world too, right? If he really wants others to join in and target China, he'd lower everything back down to pre-inauguration levels to get them on his side more and shouldn't have threatened the rest of the world in the first place. 

If his goal was to target China all along, he really did a poor job.

He now has 90 days to negotiate with the countries that want to play ball. Those that do will make some bank and there’s plenty to be made at Chinas expense. F u k communism.   China deserves everything they’re getting and more.

Yeah...am I letting him off the hook a bit? OFC. This was SO stupid...but this was clearly leading to a-best case scenario- 6-12 month recession, inflation and higher unemployment.

It did enough damage, but...it made no sense EVER to go after so many allies and POTENTIALLY turn them into Chinese allies.

Trump got out of this and he got lucky to do so(though...other countries do need us more).

Yeah...predatory is a nice way of putting it, but of course it was beyond stupid to put them on the rest of the world. That's unquestionable.

You're right about the Trump part with Canada and...everyone else.

But it's not China's tariffs that are the issue(they're just not that high). 

It's them stealing intellectual property which they regularly do. 
It's hacking and corporate espionage. Guarantee they have people at Nvidia, AMD, AVGO and every other field. 

It's the currency manipulation, it's NEVER been the tariffs. If it was tariffs, I think Brazil would be your primary target.

And companies have moved from China to Vietnam or other Asian Nations. 

 

I have a feeling the market is going to go back down after we get some clarity on the exact tariffs that were suspended. But no, 2.2% tariff rate for China. That's not the problem at all with China.
