Steveson and KOT - where do they rank in terms of 2x NCAA champs?

Crazy that Steveson and KOT are *only* 2x NCAA champs.  How would you rank them in the pantheon of 2x champs, based solely on their NCAA wrestling achievements?

Other recent notable 2x champs

  • David Taylor
  • Nick Suriano
  • Vicenzo Joseph
  • David Carr
  • Nick Lee
  • Jordan Oliver
  • Gabe Dean
  • Dean Heil
  • Zahid Valencia
  • Kellen Russell
  • Matt McDonough
  • Austin O'Connor
  • RBY
  • Vito
  • Jesse Mendez
  • IMAR
  • Chris Perry
  • Nick Gwiaz
  • Jesse Delgado
  • Brett Metcalf
  • Jordan Burroughs
  • Ben Askren
  • Quentin Wright
  • Tony Nelson

Not accounting for what they did after and simply what they did in college

-Askren
-Gable
I think that's kind of a tier of their own all 3 won the hodge the two times they won the title.

Where do you slot KOT though?

I don't have a strong view on it, but why would you say that?

Because of the list Jimmy posted and the two timers before that I think a lot of them were better. Plus he had 5 opportunities for 2 when pretty much everyone else in history had at most 4.

I see your point, but technically he had 2 in 4 years. The 5th year gave him the opportunity for 3/5 same as gable. He went 3113 in four years with 4 loses. Not saying he’s atop the list, but he definitely not at the bottom.

Definitely not at the bottom

Metcalf and Burroughs were 2X champs. Jake Herbert's another. David Taylor won a title at 165 - the same weight KOT won his 2.

Heavyweights Kerry McCoy, Steve Neal, Cole Konrad were each two-timers.

Maybe-maybe not, but recency bias may be at play.

Recency bias is definitely at play. Everyone on the original list was from ~2009 and after.

And no Dan Gable.

This is a great upper tier.  I would add Mocco and Metcalf.  Honorable mention for Travis Lee.  Quite a few mention him for greatest 133 pounder

The list will be way too long for the people above KOT.

You can absolutely make the argument for Steveson being one of the top few two time champs in history.

People are forgetting a huge one, John Smith was a 2x champ.

The list of 2x champs is so long that it's almost impossible to narrow it down to even a reasonable top 10.

That being said, David Taylor and Ben Askren are 2x champions and 2x hodge winners. How many wrestlers have two hodges?

David Taylor, Ben Askren, and Gable Steveson - let's start there.
