Trump at NCAA’s

I know some of the wrestling posters don’t look at this forum but hoping to keep some of the discussion about this here.

First of all, regardless of politics you gotta agree that it’s cool that the President was there.  He actually did seem to be enjoying himself and stayed until the end.  The timing of his entrance was awkward in terms of interrupting Starocci’s interview though, not sure whose fault that was.

 

Elon also talking about it I’m sure got some more people talking about it, not sure if it actually got any more people to watch.

But posts like this from “influencers” is what annoys me about when politics get involved in wrestling, no need to turn this into a left vs right thing:

There were hundreds of thousands people who know nothing about wrestling seeing news casts  of where he was going and also mentioning the historic matches.  My wife for one said to me, I hear Trump is going to the NCAA tourney. After an awkward late arrival, the president is said to have delayed leaving to watch The HWT match. He stayed for the entirety to congratulate the last wrestler. Thousands of non fans tuned in just for dumb political reasons. some just tuned in to see if he gets booed. anyone putting the channel on for non wrestling reasons got to watch a 4 year undefeated  5 time champion in an exciting match.  Maybe they stayed on to watch . Maybe we got afew more wrestling fans.  Sorry he might have brought some attention to wrestling; NOT!

He needs to be seen as being associated with tough guy successful athletes or people. Anything. It doesn't matter who they are, he wants the rub of being around people he thinks other people are tough, successful, etc. To him being associated with that is the most important thing. That is how he was able to con people in the early 80's, by pretending to be far more successful than he was, associating himself with important people, being seen in public as doing big things, and pretending he was involved in that crowd. It's why he made up fake names and called news outlets and lied to get himself in the press. It's all about the image he sells. Because who would care about some guy who was born rich and never had to do any real work?

You get everything wrong.  Your attempts to portray a billionaire President as somehow not intelligent or successful are pathetically unsuccessful.  Everybody saw Trump’s courage on display at Butler, PA in July 2024.  Athletes play games.  He stood up after being shot in the head, put his fist in the air, and encouraged his supporters to continue the fight.  What I saw was athletes going to him.

I don't think this helps the sport much. Only a little. Here's why:

1) Trump is rapidly becoming a very unpopular President. 

2) Very few people respect him. Even most of the wingers that like his policies realize that he's a scumbag. 

3) Trump never wrestled or did anything remotely physical himself. He's just a chicken hawk bully that likes to talk tough and show up to violent and/or combat sports. Wrestling is just another one of these sports. There's nothing else about wrestling that really seems to be attracting him to it.

He is intelligent enough to win, the lose, and learn from that loss and win again.   That is the definition of successful.
