Parsing semantics here, brother. Distinction without a difference.

Oh, I think it is a huge difference. The underlying theme of poaching is that you are stealing from another program. You are turning the head of someone who would otherwise not be interested. Welsh seems to already have fallen out of love with tOSU. He made that pretty clear. He just had to wait for the portal to open to formalize that statement.

A conveniently amorphous standard!  He was a wrestler at another school.  He allegedly wanted to transfer earlier this year...then changed his mind and very publicly confirmed he would be staying put...and then 3 months later he's gone and also immediately has a new destination.  Penn State is no better than anybody else.  Well, that is in regards to the morality of going after other school's athletes.  Obviously on the mat they're a lot better than everybody else.

This is getting a little lost in Socratic questioning of what "poaching" truly means. I do not know if the events in December led to PSU representatives reaching out and seeing if Rocco would like to join them, or if Rocco reached out to see what they could offer him if he hopped on the PSU train.

At the end of the day, PSU is not getting Rocco Welsh for free, and they brought in a high profile transfer from another school. I'm not claiming villainy. I just don't understand the efforts to act like PSU is operating in a more virtuous manner than any other of the big players.

I agree that the virtue signaling that goes on with respect to transfers is silly. There are too many who feel my team's transfers are virtuous and everyone else's are villainous. Silly.

A big part of my problem with that world view is it smacks of Stockholm Syndrome. The NCAA rules were antiquated and anti-athlete. Now that they are pro-athlete people pine for the good ol' days.

I am not arguing that PSU is better (see above), I am arguing against people using this situation to say they are worse.

If we can agree on the substantive part of the debate, I don't think we need to debate the semantics.  I think he was pretty clearly poached.  You don't.  That's fine.

He has a combined three wins in two NCAA tournaments: 2-1 over Brayden Palmer, Fall over Caleb Weiand (who finished the season with 13-18 record), and 2-1 over MAM. Not exactly a great hit list. Minnesota could upgrade here to say the least.

Flynn -> Volk is a lateral jump.  They have wrestled before.  I suggest you go watch that match before you try exclaiming that Volk is the answer.

I don't think I follow the logic of finalize a deal (which includes negotiating financial terms) before someone enters the portal is some how not poaching because they asked you first, especially when after entering the portal Okie St/DT couldn't even get a meeting.

Regardless of the two in relation to each other, the gophers straight up just need talent in the room at 125/133. The current roster below 141 is very underwhelming in terms of results. Bringing in a guy like Volk should be a no brainer, let the best man win if they both want 125. Assuming he wants to be here.

One guy is an All-American, one guy isn't. Case closed.

Are you saying that Welsh lied when he made the xpost saying “The Ohio State University is home”?  Or that he only “fell out of love with tOSU” after that?

I don't play that game.

I mean to be fair you literally asked someone earlier “why do you think Welsh is lying” (and that person never even accused him of lying)

And my question was serious.  It’s certainly possible he didn’t “fall out of love with tOSU” until after he made that post.  But it’s also possible actions by PSU influenced those feelings

He was being compared to Barry Bonds lying about taking steroids. It was a fair question.

What he tweeted in December and what he said this week were two different things, but there was a lot of time that passed too. You were trying to play gotcha.

Well if Minnow is to be believed (maybe not), allegedly Welsh was in Stillwater around when the earlier rumors started. So it’s possible OSU didn’t really wait until he officially went in the portal either

That would be a great follow up question for Rocco Welsh.

But his words were, " it was just tough watching everyone else compete and towards the end my heart just wasn't in Columbus anymore." Clearly something changed.

By the way, you should all relisten to his appearance on Basch. He specifically says he was mad about what happened during first semester and wanted to unenroll then, but his family talked him out of it. He also talks about meeting with the coaches and how they promised him they would bring in new training partners. Sounds like that did not happen.

So maybe nothing changed after all, and that was the problem.

Ok then it sounds like the most likely answer to my question is that maybe he did actually “fall out of love” with tOSU after he made that post

Penn State Gary Steen to Oklahoma State

Interesting that he’d rather be on the bench at OSU than PSU, although I suppose he could join the battle for 133.
