Shane Van Ness's last name is pronounced Van Ness not V'ness.  The BIG10 Wrestling announcers need to at least try to get it right.

Lots of conversation on x about this in regards to PSU/Maryland today.  I normally defend these guys but they were pretty bad.  Classy comment here that also acknowledges that these guys need to do better.  Worth noting that PSU was the home team so they supplied the announcers

Problem I see is Student announcers without supervision from an experienced sports announcer.

They are there to learn. Dumping them into a position without solid preparation and an experienced companion doesn't help them and subjects us to crap play by play.

Wrestling fans - so bad they seemingly find any minor thing to annoyed with instead of enjoying the best time to ever watch wrestling.  We can stream everything and we still complain.

It was easier to stream a dual meet 15 years ago.  Most of the time it was just video provided by the host school for free.

Now, if you don't have cable, satellite,  btn or flo, you're out of the loop.

Paying $2000 to watch wrestling is just too much.

On a side note, I just watched a TV show that has two guys fight in a car. That's on free TV.  But, amateur wrestling is pay per view?

You don't think we should expect Professioalism and good performance in presentation, analysis and such during the matches?

People constantly whined on the old the mat . Com that they had to pay for espn to watch NCAAs.   As if a grown azz adult doesn’t  have espn.  No it’s not or was not easier to stream 15 years ago.  You could not stream every Match from bigs.   You could not stream every Match  from NCAAs.   You could not watch finals live ish for big 12 or eiwa.  That in my opinion is nonsense.

Some context

Streaming NCAA wrestling became significantly easier in the mid-to-late 2010s around 2018, as major sports networks and dedicated platforms expanded their digital offerings.

  • 2014-2016: ESPN began increasing its streaming coverage of NCAA wrestling through WatchESPN (now ESPN+) and its app, making more matches accessible.
  • 2018: The launch of ESPN+ made it much easier to stream NCAA wrestling, including dual meets, conference tournaments, and the NCAA Championships.
  • 2020s: Big Ten Network (BTN) and B1G+ started streaming nearly all Big Ten wrestling events, further expanding access. Other conferences also partnered with platforms like FloWrestling and Trackwrestling for exclusive content.

By 2020-2022, it became very easy to stream almost every major NCAA wrestling event live through a mix of ESPN+, B1G+, FloWrestling, and conference-specific networks.

I could stream just about meaningful dual meet.  I watched penn state vs Michigan at Michigan without any announcers.  Just video.  Is that option still available.

I never said you could stream big tens or NCAAs for free.  I'd pay for those events.  $40 each. But, there's no way I'm paying flo or any other pay service outrage fees.

Are you talking about when teams would setup an iPad and live stream an entire dual from a single angle? Those were absolutely terrible. I'll gladly pay an extra $25 dollars a month from November to March for an actual production team to stream the duals.

I mean overall streaming is exponentially better for wrestling now vs 15 years ago almost nothing you could say would change that for me.   Heck they are the high school state tourneys …. Even the early rounds in a lot / many states.

you can always turn off the volume.  That would be just video.

This has been repeatedly discussed where is this pool of uber talented wrestling announcers to pull from while the talent is developed.

wrestling fans are their own worst enemy.  They pronounced a name wrong.  Literally who gives a fark.

You must have missed the PSU Maryland dual... there was a Basch @Husker_Du segment on how terrible it was....and no it wasn't just a mispronounced name. It's been more than just one instance this season.  Young kids are not prepared for big10 wrestling announcing...not necessarily their fault.... but it was a disaster.
