This makes no sense other then lack of school leadership.    They have no football team to fund, how about cutting Administrators and Teachers who make over $100,000 to help with cost cutting.   Also , look into how many have school paid for cars and housing.  Let’s also get the last year of expense reports, to see what they are spending.

Colleges are being advised by management consultants who share a similar background and philosophy as their private equity friends:

1) Identify core revenue sources

2) Strip away everything else

3) Lever up

A lot of public universities have a tough time scraping by on the funding they have, esp when they don't have a huge endowment or financial administration to manage their investment funds. Sonoma State just cut 6 academic departments, 25 majors, and their entire athletics program today and they're D2/no football.

When I say….. ADs are worried about money……  Or the board of directors is worried about money.  I’ll get smacked by posters for that comment.  This what I’m talking about.

Not that we're particularly close to the mark now, but at this rate, we might need to start considering the medium-term fate of the sport (not even long term, but sooner).  I believe if we don't have a minimum of 40 teams, the sport would no longer qualify to be a D1 NCAA sport.

But NIL is saving college sports or at least making athletes rich correct?  🙄

It will allow one last batch of college wrestlers to receive Dodge Rams, and all you can eat Dave's Chicken, as the sport itself fades into obscurity 🫠

You mean the players at colleges like Middle Tennessee State and Central Michigan correct?  💰  🤔

First we blamed Title 9.

No we are blaming the NIL.

Our society is weak in terms of the commitment it requires to wrestle, let alone by an AA.

Maybe, we can take a shot at synchronized swimming or gaming?

That should definitely wake up the ADs to reinstate Notre Dame and Oregon wrestling.

High school wrestling participation is the highest it's been since the 70s.

Where? I live in PA and most of the schools can't field a competitive team. Most of the teams have kids who were cut from basketball or cross country teams.

Why?  Because you are counting girl folkstyle wrestlers?  I guess.

If it's so popular, why have we seen so many programs dropped at the D1 level?  We used to have over 100 teams. In 10 years we will be lucky to have 25 teams.

Even in PA having a lot of schools not being able to field a competitive team is not new.

According to @Jason Bryant’s list (https://almanac.mattalkonline.com/dropped-college-wrestling-teams/), there have been 5 D1 teams dropped since 2015 (6 if you count Lindenwood but I wouldn’t - Queens, Boise State, EMU, that school in Norfolk, and Fresno State).   Well I guess there will be 6 if CSU happens.

During the same time 3 new schools have been added (Little Rock, Presbyterian and Morgan State).

Not an ideal situation, but not exactly doomsday (yet at least).

Because high school participation doesn't translate to interest in college wrestling.

How many of the guys that you wrestled with in high school do you think have watched (let alone attended) a college meet in the last few years?  How many of them do you think have watched a college football game?

Random thoughts:

It's an indication that we don't live in a warrior mindset.

Let's face it, wrestling is hard even for the winners.

Our country is soft compared to past generations. It's why travel soccer has millions of kids.  It's easy and mom can get drunk at the Saturday morning game.

Are Notre Dame or Oregon contemplating the reinstatement of their once solid wrestling programs?

How about Tennessee or Syracuse?

Honestly, I have friends who have wrestled in college.  None of their sons wrestled for more than a month or so.

Straight to basketball or soccer.

Their daughters played field hockey with several earning athletic scholarships.  Why?  Because their youth coaches were infinitely better.

There are bad youth coaches are in every sport. Fortunately your friend's kids didn't have them...

That's my point.

I will say that our elite wrestlers are  good as ever, obviously.

But the sport as a whole is dying.

I don't what it to die, but that's my opinion.

When the new rules came in didn’t CSU say they were reducing scholarships down to 2.    But still have a 33 roster, which means that’s 31 wrestlers paying their own way for school, housing and books.
