Why did he awkwardly bail out of the single?

Fatigue. It's the only thing I can think of.

He looks like a shell of his former self.

If you have a merkle, use it!  He did look exhausted.

It doesn't count as a takedown in freestyle.  It cost him the match!

He just got back from PWL.  Lots of traveling.  Wrestling high level matches. He puts himself through a grind. I'm sure he was not at his best. He does love to wrestle and he does more of it than most at that level.

It looks more like Snyder assumed he would mule kick back so Snyder held for a knee pop to get the 2, but there was no mule kick and he was stuck with a merkle. I can't imagine he practices that position often so maybe just a mental fry for the half second it took to be taken advantage of?

i am an idiot on the internet

Maybe Ono will in fact go down to 57

Ono said he will try to qualify for U23 Worlds next month, so we'll see which weight he ends up at. I believe the U23 qualifier in Japan is around the same time as the Senior Asian Championships, and I don't think he'll be at both. Kinda wild to see Ono and Higuchi being gun shy about this year's Senior Worlds but I guess it's pretty early in the cycle.

Lee did a good job fending off the leg attack once in period two... but...

I wonder why Ono didn't attack more at the end of the second period.  Lee looked exhausted and his positioning loosened. Ono held his positions and appeared to have plenty in the tank.  Was this a sign of respect?  An American likely rushes into trouble.  Ono had the mental disciple to hold position and minimize unnecessary risk.  There is something to be learned about calculated restraint there.

I thought Ono held back a little bit in the back half of the match as well. I figured it was a combination of discipline like you mentioned, and not putting it all out there and giving Spencer any more of a feel for his wrestling.

He didn't fight the leg lace very well.

Zahid teched this guy previously.

What did you like?

I liked the step out points against Lee.  I though Lee did good enough to be grounded, yet Ono initiated all the action and deserved the points.  I didn't like but did agree with the calls.

What did I not like?

The Iowa boos against Ono for "stalling."

Bitter and inhospitable.  This wasn't PSU.  This was Japan!
