I think Illinois can win

133
149
165 (would love for Sammy to win but I honestly think he could give up bonus here scoles is super good in scrambles and goes at a crazy pace. Current Sammy I think really struggles here maybe a Birden match)
174
184
197

Ohio State could get bonus at 125,141 maybe heavy? Luffman does not really give up bonus but sometimes Feldman blows the doors off of good guys.

149 and 174 seem like the most important matches of the dual to me I favor Illinois at both weights I think.

174-197 the thing that makes it interesting is that Lil Brauny, Ruth, Rogotzke, Big Brauny all could live on space mountain. And no one knows what to expect from Karchla, Sosa

Just noticed, why did Ohio St schedule a football game for Friday 5:30pm MT 30 minutes before the big dual.  Could it be they are trying divert/distract their fans and save them from the disappointment?  Why isn't MP petitioning the powers that be to delay the kickoff till 8pm MT?  What about that US Steel thing ... 🤔

Potential shake up to the lineups. Sammy Sasso is registered (at 157 lbs.) to wrestle at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday: https://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/seasons/LoadBalance.jsp?seasonId=841725138&pageName=EventMatches.jsp&teamId=1455765147

Rocco Welsh and Ben Davino are also slated to compete at F&M it looks like at least according to the "wrestlers" tab. This is an open so they could go unattached.

I believe he is challenging for the 157 spot.

I don't think he can beat Gallagher.

Best case would be that Sammy can get back down to 149 (Big if) and challenge D'Emilio. I'd say 165 moving forward would be Hepner.

I am a bit curious to know how much of Sammy's struggles at 165 are purely physical limitations from the recovery, and how much is that he's just not a 165. At least at CKLV it looked mostly to me like he is giving up too much size/strength to where he's aren't able to wrestle through positions like he normally would. Maybe he'll be better at 157, but even if he's able to perform better at 157, beating Gallagher would be a pretty remarkable feat.

Having seen OSU in person this year I will say that watching Sasso and Gallagher warm up together it looked pretty clear to me that Gallagher was the bigger of the two. I think the best tOSU lineup could potentially be Sasso 157 and Gallagher 165 but that depends on if the 157 Sasso is closer to pre injury ability than 165 Sasso is.

My podcast partner Brian Swaw will be calling the dual on BTN+ tomorrow. He was a wrestler, wrestling coach and is a wrestling father. He knows his stuff, and did a broadcast stint on ESPN radio. Plus, he's had a college student working with him as the play-by-play guy for two years running. Brian has been helping the kid out so that they make a great team now.

I'd put them up against Mack Reiter at Minnesota and Jeff Byers at PSU. TOP QUALITY! I did enjoy Alex Marinelli and Kaleb Young when they called the ILLINI dual two years ago. They were pretty fair and obviously knowledgeable. The rest of the BTN+ crews have been on average very cringeworthy. If I hear another "player" or "that was a great play," I'm gonna....

On another subject, we have dueling statisticians. The first from the official ILLINOIS site, FightingILLINI.com:

"The all-time series record between the Buckeyes and Illini is 37-37-1 with the first meeting dating back to 1934."

The second is from the official Ohio State site:

"The Buckeyes won a 37-34 edge in the all-time series against Illinois and have won seven of the last duals."

That sentence has so many problems with it, I have to believe it was AI generated. I'm going with the 37-37-1, which would make this match the tiebreaker.

Rocco Welsh was noted on the Feb 5th Zagreb rankings tourney early participants at 79kg fyi. I doubt he actually participates based on nothing more than a gut feeling because I don't keep in touch with those loser Buckeyes, I only focus on teams with senior world team members like the Fighting Illini.

Did Brian do the Mizzou dual?  If so, I can vouch that he does an excellent job.

That makes me nervous with a Gallagher/Hepner matchup. Hepner would probably be the bigger 2 of the wrestlers and he is very good on top. Not sure how much a 165 Gallagher improvement is over a 165 Hepner. I believe 157 is an ideal weight for Gallagher that he can low AA and possibly score some bonus at Bigs and NCAAs.

I might be outta pocket but that looks a lot like the foothills between Boulder and Longmont. If so, we might be "neighbors"

Don't mean to expose you though so feel free to cheekily deny and claim residence in New Mexico

This dual is not on BTN, but PSU/MSU is? That’s crazy.

thanks to BTN+ we can see it. MSU has only two showings on BTN, but you think they would have given them a date where they could win a match. Its predicted 43-0 and the closest match BY RANK is supposed to be #1 Carter against # 44.
