in sales we gobble up free software deals in companies q4… similar to the second one but on the receiving end not the giving end.   This was a diff fortune 50 company and a few startups.  

our gov sales team always have some crazy stories about the corruption.

Yes that brings up another area of inefficiency, the end of fiscal year money.  You see it it government agency, public schools even within decisions of public traded companies.  If they don't spend the money by eofy then they won't be allocated as much next year.  Good time to buy furniture, printers or dole out some small project grants.  If you are good at grant writing this can be easy money.  Basically they are being penalized for being efficient, hence one more reason why we shouldn't expect efficiency in government.

Good point. This is probably billions of dollars. I have had friends who work in remodeling see this first hand. Massive waste of taxpayer money.

I kinda feel bad for Vivek TBH.  He seems like a smart guy, but he spent his whole campaign simping for Trump with the likely hope of a cabinet position, only to be forced to share a role with Elon that’s not even a real cabinet position and that Elon will probably try to make most of the decisions for

GAO budget for 2025  is 1 billion dollars. They have 3600 employees. It doesn't seem like a very good investment for the taxpayer. Is there a list somewhere of what they are actually accomplishing? I would think an efficient department would easily find 500 billion dollars of waste in fraud in federal government. Being that there are estimates of 1 trillion dollars of waste and fraud in the federal government. I would also think that an efficient department could eliminate all the redundancy spread throughout the federal government while they are at it. That might save us another 400 billion dollars.

I don’t really care that there are 2 people leading the department, although I do think it’s funny to joke about it.  Just like it’s funny to joke about them telling people to apply via DM but then the DM’s not actually being open.

I do think Vivek was probably gunning for a more important/official position though.  

My 2 for 1 comment was in relation to the posting saying they’re expecting people to work 80+ hours a week.  Could be wrong but I believe there have been studies done showing that worker productivity declines at that level of hours.

This isn't about exploiting labor or doing menial labor like mowing the lawn for 80 hours. It's about engaging in creative, knowledge-intensive tasks. They're after the individual who's driven by purpose, who seeks mastery, and values autonomy, willing to go the extra mile for results.

Consider lawyers who work 55 hours a week and then spend another 40 updating Wikipedia for free. That's the spirit they are looking for.

In a corporate setting, they're aiming for the top 1% of performers who exceed expectations, not the 70% who just meet them.

It's not about tracking hours; it's about a dedication to achieve. They want individuals who mirror their own zeal and commitment.  If you're concerned about working hours, that suggests you value more free time.  That is fine; this is not a job for you.

I’ve been around driven people.  Folks who found startups.  They love working 80+ hours a week.  It’s what makes them tick.   I suspect Vivek / Elon are precisely those people.  Folks, some folks run to that environment.   Some folks run away.

Don’t know much about Vivek, but for Elon I’d guess this statement isn’t mutually exclusive from the one of mine you quoted.

Just depends.

Kid in school and after school sports.

Provider working 55+ through the week, dinner and a game together as a family, weekend time.  Provider sometimes needs to put into more time across a few weeks to get important work done.  

Tradeoffs.

55+ is much different than 80+

Vivek was raised upper middle class.  He was nationally ranked at tennis and a valedictorian in High School.  He graduated summa cum laude at Harvard.  He made partner at a Hedge Fund before starting his own business.  Listen to him speak, the historical knowledge and legal knowledge of America.  That's enough evidence to know he knows how to chop wood and carry water (e.g. 55 to 80 hour weeks when needed).

And “when needed” is much different than making it an apparent requirement

Hedge funds are notorious for 0 home / family/ life balance…. And it’s why driven people go there.   I once was a 60/70/80 hour a week person when the incentives are there …. No longer would I do that but for a long time I did.

A lot of infidelity, divorce, and suicide in those demographics.

Personally, I can work 55+ without missing family time.  I cannot sustain 80 for more than a few weeks, a couple times a year.  I've done 100 hour weeks a couple of times.  All by choice.  So long as I know my why, and get the rewards for my labor, the tradeoff is worth it.  The golden handcuffs are heavy at times.

The mention of 80 hours weekly for two years isn't about strictly enforcing those hours but more about signaling the kind of dedication or work ethic desired in an employee.

Results matter more than effort.

The creator's effort matters none to my consumer decision to buy the Ford F150.  Rather my purchase is result driven.  Is it useful for my needs, reliable, affordable?  Sold!

I don't want to pay five workers to stand around the slow/stop sign in the street for two months.  I want the street repaired in 24 hours.  Oh - you have someone that get the work done faster by being smarter without working harder?  Great!  Just get it done, now and well.
