Who does Arnold have a better shot at taking out?

Levi Haines at 174 or Carter Starocci at 184?

174 is probably closer to Arnold's natural weight and Haines is *only* a 1x NCAA champ.  Haines is also moving up 2 weight classes so Arnold is surely the bigger man naturally.

184 is probably a little bigger than Arnold's natural weight, but Starocci is also moving up from 174 and also coming off a major knee injury, so this is a closer call than initially appears.

Interesting. Seems like wrestlestat is suggesting Arnold actually scores offensive points against Starocci in this as of yet hypothetical match up. I think a lot of Iowa fans would take that result

Could be two escapes and two penalty points for Starocci defiling his grave.

I wonder how much weight the wrestlestat algo places on most recent results? And of course Starocci's most recent five results were low scoring, compromised knee affairs. And the two before that were injury forfeits.

This seems like a place to bet the over.

I don't give him a shot against either guy. Levi keeps coming for guys though, Carter will wrestle the match that Arnold presents him probably which to me is likely a two takedown match, something like 8-1, 8-2. I could see if Levi can score early him starting to string together takedowns late.

For what its worth pretty sure at one point in time wrestlestat.com had Spencer Lee beating Gable Steveson.

I think we may be underestimating the size difference between a 157 pounder moving up 2 weight classes vs a guy who wrestled 184 last  year.  Arnold is huge.

It is written into the constitution that no one standing 5'7" can be considered huge

When Levi beat KOT at WTT, Levi was the bigger human. He will be a solid sized 174. I don't anticipate seeing much, if any, size difference between Levi and Arnold

They figured Steveson couldn't make 125?

Correct. In fact, I remember @Jimmy Cinnabon standing pat that Aaron Brooks was too short to be successful at 197. 🥴

I can envision this . How is Gabe's gas tank?

I feel like conditioning and pace won't be an issue at either weight as much as technique and funk against the PSU guys

Neither Levi or Starocci are funky wrestlers though.  In fact they may be the least funky starters on the team.  They are bread and butter fundamentals.

Using funk loosely... but their ability to outscramble others or finish from atypical positions and situations

I think Gabe would fair better against Haines because Starocci is just the better wrestler at this point in time in my opinion. Starocci was a very big 174 pounder last year and I think he is one of those guys that will still look like the biggest guy in the weight class when he moves up to 184. Haines pretty much stomped everyone last year but he did have some close matches with very defensive wrestlers. Well, really only Will Lewan. But Gabe Arnold's defense might be on par with a guy like Will Lewan. If you can keep the match close, then you have a shot at the end.
