Let the countdown begin.

We are 10 long days from the start of the wrestling season. November 1 kicks off with 11 duals per wrestlestat:

  • Chattanooga - Virginia Tech
  • Campbell - Wyoming
  • North Dakota State - Virginia
  • Utah Valley - Stanford
  • Indiana - Cal Baptist
  • CSU Bakersfield - Stanford
  • Ohio - Wisconsin
  • Purdue - Gardner-Webb
  • Seton Hill - Edinboro
  • CSU Bakersfield - Utah Valley
  • Pitt-Bradford - Edinboro Dual

What is at stake this season?

  • Sadly, for the first time since 2019 there are no returning wrestlers working on becoming four-timers (I am not counting Ferrari until the NCAA confirms he received an Oly RS).
  • But there is one wrestler working on becoming a five-timer. He is a little know wrestler who goes by Carter Starocci.
  • PSU returns what I believe to be a record number of points from the prior tournament at 130.
  • But having lost 42.5 points across 3 weights, getting to 173 is still in doubt.
  • Cael Sanderson has a shot to tie or beat the all-time record for individual champions. At 40 he stands just 5 behind Dan Gable's 45. (shout out @fishbane)
  • In other news, NC State is looking to win their seventh straight ACC title.
  • Appalachian State goes for its third straight SoCon title.

What else am I missing?

Damn. Krooked Kale is really that close to the individual champs record? I guess that's what happens when you recruit all the #1's 🤓...

I hate to be a downer, but with what's happening at Campbell, after the recent NCAA changes, for me, there is a concern of program retention for many of the smaller schools.  Here's to hoping we can minimize those losses if they are coming.

Thats right the Pokes beat em!  I was there sitting in row 1 and up the stairs at the top of the arena heading for the airport before any Hawkeye fans had figured out the tie breaker math.  I've been CHA about 4 times for OSU v IA, Pokes always won but alas haven't been since 2012.  🤠

Everyone recruits the #1's.

Cael lands them.

Correction:

Campbell wrestles Wyoming on UFCfightpass on October 31 by special permission of the NCAA. It should be a barn burner! Wyoming were great host last year and both teams wanted to "run it back." Coach Branch, Sentes and UFCfightpass are sure to make it another special EVENT. It will be a great way to kick off the season in style!

I believe shirts are only applied when current eligibility runs up or is close to running up, so he'll not be officially granted it until later in the season this year (I think this would count as his actual senior year, he is in need of a regular redshirt as well as his Oly).

Why would there be any question that one of the years counted as a regular redshirt?

FWIW, he is listed as a RSSO on the Bakersfield roster.

It's gonna be fun with seeing AJ day one of duals vs a new ACC team that's in Cali.

Also ASU is in the Big 12 now.

Last year of Campbell.

Last year of any Amines

Last year of OSU's crazy recruiting class (outside of AJ)

This NOT the last year of Campbell! Not by a long shot!! Due to belt tightening the administration cut scholarships from 9 to 3. The way it was done is tough on returners, but other schools will feel the roster reduction pain as well. MANY schools have rosters larger than 30 and they will be forced to cut their numbers too, if they are part of the revenue sharing plan.

I never said there was a question of it.  I meant in order for it to be applied it must actually be submitted and while we as the public already retroactively put them in place, they aren't actually taken in to account in an official manner by the NCAA until they use up their four years of eligibility.

Also, a school's website is not run by some sort of eligibility tracker.  A person put him on their roster as a RS-SO.

I'm not a huge fan of Stanford in the ACC, but their upcoming schedule looks pretty fun. And by fun I mean also brutal. That's a tough slate of wrestling ahead for the Cardinal!

But I am assuming it is the Smith's. Lee Roy Sr.'s boys took home 13 AA's: 4 for Pat, and 3 each for John, Mark and Lee Roy Jr.

Nothing for Luke and Matthew apparently.

The Peerys were 9 for 9 for NCs.  Father and two sons each went 3 for 3 in college.  The Smiths went 7 for 12.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

The 2012 win at Carver Hawkeye was significant.  It snapped Iowa's 84 match unbeaten streak, which is tied for the longest in NCAA history with OSU.  OSU went undefeated over 84 matches from 1959-1966 under Myron Roderick.

During Iowa's unbeaten streak from 2008-2012 OSU was the team that prevented them from claiming several NCAA records.  OSU broke Iowa's previous streak beating them on 1/5/2008.  Then Iowa won 69 straight matches.  This is the longest winning streak by a single head coach in D1.  Brands is tied with two OSU coaches.  OSU won 69 straight under Ed Gallagher from 1921-1932 and Smith duplicated the feat between 1996-1999.  Iowa's 70th match match was against OSU in Stillwater and ended in a 15-15 tie.  This kept Brands level with Smith and Gallagher and also prevented Iowa a chance at the overall win streak record of 76 (OSU 1937-1951).

It was only OSU's win 1/5/2008, tie 1/16/2011, and win 1/7/2022 that kept OSU in first in these streaks.

PSU is currently in the throes of a winning streak that dates back to 2020.  In total it is 56 matches, which is 4 shy of the PSU record.  That record was set between 2015 and 2019.  If PSU wins all 15 matches they have scheduled this season that will be 5 straight undefeated seasons and break the record for the longest PSU win streak (60), longest win streak by a coach in D1 (69 Brands, Smith, Gallagher) and have PSU with the second longest winning streak by a team in NCAA history at 71 straight wins.   Should that happen going into next season PSU will be within striking distance of the longest winning streak by a team (76 OSU) and longest unbeaten streak (84 OSU & Iowa).

Since 2/15/2015 PSU is 122-2 with loses to ASU and Iowa in the 2019-2020 season.  Both of those were road matches.  PSU has not lost at home since Iowa 2/8/2015.  That match was in the Bryce Jordan Center.  PSU has not lost in Rec Hall since Minnesota 1/25/2015.

Impressive for the brothers but as a family can you include Mark & Chris Perry and by extension Mark Perry Sr through marriage to Kathy?

Thanks!  Unfortunately for us the most athletic of the clan, JT Realmuto, opted for some pastime sport.  Forget what it's called.
