Will Sidakov be in Tirana?

As of now, it looks like Sheriev is going. I thought it was a bit of a surprise that Sidakov went last year since we thought Russian military stuff would hold him out.

Well now that JB has finished competing at these World Championships, what’s next? Does he continue on to 2025? I really thought that he would have retired by now, but apparently the fire in his belly is still burning very brightly. My thought is, can his body keep up?

Put another way, is competing really the highest and best use of his talents and experiences?

Dude is a very experienced competitor, but the sport has clearly moved on.  He is, however, an amazing voice and ambassador for the sport.

I'm sure the fire will always be there, but he has the ability to be the actual face of the sport for the next many decades.

We should definitely be actively encouraging of that, his is one of the top handful of wrestling minds to come out of our country in the past 50 years.

Judging from JB's interview going into the championships, it sure sounded like this was going to be his last go-round.  If so, it seems a bit anticlimactic. Did UWW have one of those special retirement medals made up for JB too, and just give it to him in private?  Or are they just assuming he isn't done?

His was definitely a better way to go out than the Olympic Trials loss, but man, what a difference it makes to reach a medal match.  If they are both done, it seems weird to have all the fanfare for DT but not JB. Its funny:  If Nokhodi and Ghassempour had held on to their semifinal leads, it'd have been JB in a bronze medal match, and DT watching from the sidelines.

Hopefully USA Wrestling can have a little retirement ceremony for JB.  GOAT.

The couple of times I've heard him doing the match commentary, he was excellent.

Taylor’s Ok State paycheck has to have Burroughs thinking hard about coaching.

Question is - is there a program that would be willing to pay near that to JB?  Any with deep pockets wanting the change?

OK state stepped up.  Would Oklahoma?  Making stuff up here.

For Burroughs, the name recognition alone is worth it. Somebody somewhere has to have their two brain cells working overtime to make this happen.

Well I believe that DT got the big money partly because of his accomplishments but also because he was part of Cael Sanderson’s epic and continuing run, and the belief is that DT can replicate that at Oklahoma State.
Now obviously JB has the accolades, but he is a product of Nebraska, which is an elite program, but does that translate into the same level of salary that DT received.

That would be very good for college wrestling if there were another deep-pocketed booster looking to make a splash.

Nebraska is not an elite program lol

Nearing the end of his 30's, I have to think we would have seen more involvement in the careers of others from JB if coaching was really on his mind.

I could be completely incorrect, but he has always struck me as a very self-driven self-oriented lone wolf type of wrestler, much more like Sammy Henson or Cary Kolat more than DT or some of the other more team, group, room oriented wrestlers.

Again, I could be very off base on this, but to me JB has always come across as being about JB and doing what is necessary to make JB successful.

This is in no way bad, just an observation of personality types that succeed on certain paths vs others post competition.

Taylor also had strong evidence (via M2) that he could lead a staff who brings in a bunch of young people, gets their buy-in, and makes them very good at wrestling.

I feel sorry for JB. At least Tayor got an exclamation point, a final chord to end this career (though slightly muted).

JB didn't. His song is fading out into silence. I find it hard to imagine him motivated for another big tournament (like 2025 Worlds). Running World team trials (no Final X). I don't think so.

Yeah, I feel terrible for him. I think he just wanted a respectable retirement. He definitely couldn’t get it at OTT, and now he didn’t have the opportunity here because Nokhodi got caught in a lace. He can’t catch a break to even have a decent retirement

Thanks, Penn State fans.

I don't feel sorry for him.  He won a World Championship just two years ago at the age of 34.  He chose to keep going.  He's a great champion and one of the best ever.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

It is like a champion boxer who comes back to the ring again and again, even when they get hit more often each time. The way JB lost to the Iranian it is clear that he should have hung it up after his last world title if he wanted a heroes exit. When he shot for a double and the Iranian easily threw him by, I grimaced because that is not how I wanted to remember him going out.  I don't know if he thought he really had a chance at "all I see is gold" or even a medal, but if he is okay with wrestling with "a chance" at a medal that is his choice. He did have a chance if the Iranian didn't brain fart at the end of his semi finals. It is difficult to swallow... you were the best for many years and now... each day makes each movement just a bit more difficult, each reaction a bit slower.

I'm under the impression that JB is doing fine financially and doesn't need to get into D1 coaching for the money. There's so much BS in college sports these days that I wouldn't blame him for passing on that challenge.

That said, if he does get into coaching it would be nice to see him be the start of something rather than just be a part of something. Skip the Big Ten schools and the power programs, build a dynasty at like Rider, Cal Poly, or Tarleton State.

And now that I've got my head up in the clouds, it would be fun to see JB expand his clubs into full-blown freestyle academies. Start a pro/semi-pro freestyle league between the RTCs. JB has the star power to pull sponsors and media. I hope he thinks big.
