Is Valencia expected to start over Miranda? He is definitely the best option for Stanford but I could see them wanting to have him take a full redshirt year

Believe the match was at 149. I think they plan on mass redshirting this year.

Do you have other results?

Speaking of Stanford...tough schedule.

Cholakyan dec Hanson in OT

Abas 4-2 Dec over Parco.

Other match of note was Guffey vs Norman, but I don’t have a result.

Given the depth of their recruiting class I think you’ll see a lot of guys in and out of the lineup.

ILLINI WRESTLE-OFFS

125 Ramazan Attasauov D Caelan Riley (8-1)
133 Anthony "Joey" Ruzic D Brian Beers (4-3)
133 Lucas Byrd MD Brian Beers (15-3)
133 Lucas Byrd TF Anthony "Joey" Ruzic (19-4)
149 Jake Harrier D Hudson Goebel (6-4)
149 Kannon Webster MD Jake Harrier (10-2)
157 Logan Swaw D Charlie Fifield (7-3)
157 Antonio Alvarado WBF Tegan Chumbley
157 Jason Kraisser WBF Logan Swaw
157 Jason Kraisser WBF Antonio Alvarado
165 Braeden Scoles TF Caden Ernd (19-4)
165 Braeden Scoles MD Chris Moore (16-5)
174 Danny Braunagel MD Cooper Wettig (16-4)
184 Edmond Ruth D Dylan Connell (4-1; SV)
197 Zac Braunagel TF Isiah Pettigrew (25-9)
285 Peter Marinopoulos MD Marko Ivanisevic (19-7)
285 Luke Luffman TF Marko Ivanisevic (16-1)

285 Luke Luffman MD Peter Marinopoulos (10-2)

The BIG MATCH was All American Edmond Ruth over National Qualifier and 4x ILLINOIS State Champ Dylan Connell. Lot's of respect shown in that match. Lucas Byrd was mean against his own teammates. Wait'll he gets ahold of your favorite 133er! Kannon Webster versus Jake Harrier was a one-point match last year. Jake was the starter the year before.

A match that I really wanted to see was Zac Braunagel versus Isiah Pettigrew. Isiah started last season while Zac was on his Olympic redshirt. The match did not disappoint! Luke Luffman is somehow quicker than he has ever been. He's always been agile, but WOW! I would give outstanding wrestler awards to two ILLINI: Jason Kraisser and Braeden Scoles.

Scoles convincingly beat last year's true Freshman starter and National Qualifier Chris Moore and a really tough spot starter in Caden Ernd. Jason Kraisser pinned both his opponents, including Logan Swaw who got the start at B10's after the injury to Joe Roberts. I expect both to shoot up the rankings once the real matches start.

The Most Improved Award goes to Antonio Alvarado. Kid's got moxy. He'll be a starter and win some matches one day. For match-by-match descriptions and video, check out this link

Stanich ended up not competing in the Lehigh Wrestle Offs. Any knowledge anyone has on that?

sounds like Lehigh doesn't use these wrestle-offs to determine starting spots any longer (if they ever did) and use it as more of an exhibition - per @gimpeltf

For what it's worth, the results of the B&W intrasquad... exhibition bouts:

Brown and White Intrasquad Results
125 – Sheldon Seymour (Brown) dec. Mason Ziegler (White) 7-2
125 – Matty Lopes (Brown) major dec. Logan Wadle (White) 20-6
141 – Malyke Hines (White) tech fall Seamus Mack (Brown) 18-2, 6:57
157 – Jadon Skellenger (White) dec. Griffin Gonzalez (Brown) 4-2
165 – Thayne Lawrence (Brown) dec. Owen Quinn (White) 8-1
165 – Max Brignola (White) Fall Zeke Dubler (Brown) 5:19
165 – Richie Grungo (White) dec. Dom Federici (Brown) 11-6
174 – Jared Schoppe (Brown) major dec. Liam Gil-Swiger (White) 14-4
174 – Rylan Rogers (White) tech fall Keegan Gagnon (Brown) 19-4, 1:40
184/197 – Remy Brancato-Roed (Brown) major dec. Dontae Hoose (White) 13-4
285 – Nathan Taylor (Brown) tech fall Calvin Lachman (White) 17-2, 4:04

The Stanich/Repos match was scratched... apparently no real reason given, other than they're not wrestling tonite. ref. from YouTube  Lehigh Wrestling Brown & White 2024 approx 7:50 min into the stream.)

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Yeah Buesgens is going 149, Arrington is redshirting, Orine going 141

Trumble can't down to '97 anymore?  Trephan is awfully good to be riding the pine.

Are they going to redshirt Skellenger?

Good to see Rogers at 174.

Not sure about Skellenger at this time, we'll see how that will play out as the season unfolds.

Agree w/ Rylan... certainly looked good last Thursday evening.

@Idaho, do you think Ethan Stiles will beat out Hamblin for the 157 spot?

Stiles beat him in OT 8-5  at the wrestle-off. It was a good match. Hamblin led early and looked pretty good. I think this could be a weight that we see them both get some starts.

I used your notes here in our Preview of the November 2nd dual between the ILLINI and SIUE. I also gave you and Intermat Forums credit.

SIUE is on the up. A good young nucleus, and Daryl Thomas is a great recruiter and coach. Cheers!

But are the Illini hauling the mat down there and is SIUE really gonna use it?  Expecting a lot of mid age women in the crowd.

I will be there. So I guess I will be the judge of the middle age women in the crowd. Also, I think 80% of Illinois lineup gets their AARP after the match. (Nothing wrong with that)

Shoot us a pic of the mat, I think IWB is off on this one.  And if any of the Illini go home with older women well ...

Cornell at 141/149:  Vince Cornella (WS#15 @141, 2023 EIWA Champion, 2xNQ, 34-15 record) vs. Ethan Fernandez (WS#14 @149, 1xNQ, 34-14 record) vs Josh Saunders (U23 champion, beat Fernandez last November).  Not sure if Saunders will go up or down (or nowhere).

Been thinking about this predicament for the past couple seasons. Hard to imagine a wrestler like Saunders not starting in college. Especially now that he’s made a world team and shown he can beat AA/NQ types (albeit in FS). His performance in the dual against Jack who AA’d only a few weeks later is only evidence I can think of right now that he can do it in folk.

On the other hand, without the ability to take a RS or wrestle as a grad, it’s even harder to see Cornella on the bench in his JR season. Especially if he comes back healthy enough to still be an AA threat. So I think Vince gets the nod even if he loses a wrestle-off… as you mentioned, he beat Fernandez in OT during an early season open but didn’t start, likely due to whatever the room dynamic was and Grey’s sense that Fernandez would be better against common opponents.

UNLESS Cornella is too far from 100% yet AND Saunders proves himself to be the better option against other competition; a tall task considering how proven Cornella is against this 141 field. Fernandez has also grown into the weight at 149 after making the jump from 133. So size may be a factor in an attempt to unseat Fernandez, and even more so if he first tries to take the spot at 141, which makes sense after getting used to being down at 65 kg.

Also interesting in the sense that it’s probably not an outcome Big Red fans were expecting, is how similar the resumes are becoming between Cornella and Fernandez, who wasn’t nearly the recruit Cornella was coming out of HS. I think he just made the big board at #296 while Cornella was top 100 maybe even top 50. Both became EIWA champs with almost identical win/loss records after 2 seasons and very similar NCAA tournament runs (defeated qualifers from the MAC, lost to high AA’s, and lost winnable matches to Swiderski).

No.

Trumble will go at HWT. He’s significantly ahead of Owen, much more offensive. Likely Christian Knopp at 197.

I was surprised to see Horne get dominated so badly in the challenge match as well.  He had high hopes.

U23 World Team just to clarify.

But in regards to his college results, he is 20-5 combined for his career. Yes, he lost 7-4 to Jack last year. But, was also pinned by Kelvin Griffin (Lehigh backup) and lost 4-1 to Cross Wasilewski (who was in HS last year). His best career win is probably over his teammate Fernandez or maybe Ethen Miller (back in January of 2022) who is 2-4 in his last two NCAAs. Hard to take that resume over Fernandez or Cornella.

Any concerns with Grice's gas tank down at 125? I know it's way to early to tell, but just asking. An Oz-Figs matchup at the ASU dual would be fun to see.

he's been good thus far. The elephant in the room, is Grice performing on the big stage. Those don't realize, he was beating Frost last year and lost at the end of the match. He has a ton of talent. Oz is going to be exciting man, he is going to be a mini ech (again, good job captain obvious) but he will throw you on your head. He is working hard on top and bottom game.
