I will make all the 4 th place trophies for 1 million dollars. That will save them 3 million . I will also put in a bid to do the other trophies. There's no more fourth place trophies in sports that don't actually determine their placement by head-to-head. So track and field and basically every individual sport x 3 divisions. I'm sure the cost is more than just "making the trophy," though. It does seem a bit high, but I'm also not a trophy maker and the small ones I've ordered from places like Pittsburgh Trophy aren't exactly cheap for the "cheap" ones. 2 Insert catchy tagline here. Maybe the NCAA just needs better accountants. Dogbone Posted November 30, 2023 Share Posted November 30, 2023 I get the feeling that the contract to make trophys for the NCAA is similar to a government contract where it there is no checks and balances and hammers end up costing $10K. Those national trophies in a school's trophy case probably do some amount of good for recruiting, and they certainly enhance then NCAA brand overall. Also, theyve been adding sports over the years and even increasing the number of athletes in various sports who would be considered "all-americans" (another great brand/recruiting/marketing tool). A request to estimate cost for some project came across my desk and my boss was like we don’t want to do this. Make sure the estimate is rather huge. When I asked why… he was like didn’t you hear me when I said we didn’t want to do this project. Eye opener. TylerDurden Posted November 30, 2023 Share Posted November 30, 2023 Whether or not this consideration is worth $4 million, I don't know, but how many awards vendors/manufacturers can handle the NCAA's awards volume? They can't just run into the local shop and ask for Little League trophies. I'm sure they get gouged, but if there are only a few vendors who can fulfill your order, those vendors do have some leverage. It could be even worse if they have a exclusive agreement with a vendor and no one bothered to list price ranges/restrictions, i.e., a bad contract.
