Toyota put their eggs in the hybrid market and I think that is the better way to go.   The could see that the EV market was not there.

The Rav4 and Prius plug in hybrids are both rated for about 40 miles on the electric engine. I could run exclusively on it for about 90% of my driving. It would mean very little change in my behavior, plugging in at night, and would even have benefits, it's way faster than a standard Rav4. To the extent people are worried about pollution from cars, and climate change, it seems like these are a much easier sale than full electric.

I'd consider one of these as my next vehicle way before a full electric even if they had price parity.

Likewise my son in Houston (Oil & Gas) just bought a Volvo plug in.  Same thing, 40 mi on battery can get to and from work no gas.  Also has trip optimization mode to kick in electric at best times to improve mpg.  Is he shooting himself in the foot going plug in, prob not.

Where are you located? Perhaps in a state with a mild climate temperature.

The issue compounds when the change to renewable only energy kicks in and the energy at night is reduced or nonexistent.   The charge will need to be done while the sun is high and the wind is blowing.

I think the point is that the hybrid is a better option than the full EV.   You can go further than with a full EV if you are on a long trip, and it sips the gas with way better gas mileage.   Until we get to a point where we have an electric grid that can handle the demands of AI, EVs and regular use, having an EV does not make sense.   AI is here and will grow.   That will stretch the capabilities of the current grid to its capacity.

There was a reason back in September and early October all the banks and tech companies were suddenly bullish on nuclear. They all finally had this realization.

AI will not survive on renewable energy.  If coal and petroleum are shut out, nuclear will be the only possible alternative.

AI suffering might well be a very good thing.

Since, at this point, it is basically data mining from individuals' private data more than it is anything else.

And, again, at this point it helps China more than anyone else (since they have no limits on privacy and such.)

Bans, mandates, EPA, etc etc and they can't get the basics right.  We must have Mr. Fusions mandated by Congress and enforced by administrative fiat NOW!!

In further Climateer news:  The EU politicians have come out against the EU politicians.

Libs and lefties can reduce human breathing by 50% right now!  They have the power and do not need conservatives to do anything nor enact any legislation or regulations anywhere.  If they would simply start holding their breaths until Flux Capacitors and Mr Fusions are mandated (which will lead to their creation, of course) then they can breathe safely again.  You know, for the health of the planet.

Or they could kill 50% of all humans.   Or they could mandate the killing of those that exercise and mandate people sit while not sleeping for 16 hours at least each day.  For the good of the planet .

Another self-inflicted wound leading to a manmade disaster.  Nissan went all in on full EVs and completely neglected their customers' desires for other powertrain configurations (traditional hybrids like the Prius and/or PHEV).  So, now they are f'ed and trying to figure out how to get back to making cars people want.

I wish someone would take the time to put together all the doom and gloomers about the climate/pollution/etc since the 60's through to now and see the resemblance and how ridiculous the claims are.  Who knows, maybe someone has done this already?

Or maybe we heavily tax compute processing by AI, crypto-mining, and driverless car tech. All interesting, and all very energy draining. Yet none proven to actually provide anything useful to society other than as a drain.

We can all breath for a very long time without concern if wasteful technologies are identified and managed.

There's a reason China banned crypto-mining in 2021.

And, yes mspart, I agree that plants should be around. Plants should be a much higher priority than tech.
