I don't think Bono is in jeopardy, but Askren could probably do better.  I think they missed their chance though.

My thinking aligns with yours, more or less.

They would have to throw something ridiculous at Askren to have it make sense for him.  He doesn't need the job.

That said, once some of his AWA guys make it through college, he could start plucking them for his coaching staff.

Bono may not be in Jeopardy but the current state will not work, Wisconsin is producing some high caliber high school wrestlers and few if any are going to Wisconsin, we can all sit around the fire with a bottle of Whiskey and debate why they are not going to Wisconsin, but the bottom line is they are not and if that does not change nothing is going to change in Madison

Well AWA has what.... 95%+ of the top-end talent there?  Hopke is the basically the lone exception, right... and he went to Minny.

With the bridge being burnt between Benji and Bono I don't expect any top-end Wiscy talent to go to Wiscy.

Actually that burnt bridge may be damning in many other states too.  More people (kids) know who Askren is than Bono (the coach - duh!).  Askren has been vocal about how much of a dishonest turdbiscuit Bono is.

What a horrible bridge to burn.  Crazy to think about it.

I think it’s been talked about here before but can’t remember, what even happened between Bono and Askren?

Probably more than one thing, but a big thing that Askren has mentioned was a dispute over practice facility usage during the covid shutdown when he was doing the Wisconsin RTC gig.

Insofar as that goes, I don't think Askren has much leg to stand on.  Wasn't Bono just following the rules and stipulations that the B1G put forth?  Askren is and was a known believer in it being a Plandemic.

Bono's issues, whatever they are, that led to them getting shutout by ISU go beyond Askren IMO.

He was unable to keep his two best wrestlers in Gomez and Wick from finishing their careers at Wis. let along staying post grad to train.  I get that outside factors may have played in there but if you can't keep your best around to wrestle post-grad it is not a good sign.

Braxton Amos was as blue chip as they come and he hasn't sniffed AA status yet.

What's going in on Madison??

I am curious as to the Seth Gross situation.

The guy seems to be as cool and good as they come with a focus on his god and family.  Yet he sticks around that Turdbiscuit (capital T).

I think the short answer is:  "he's Bono's guy."

I wasn't going to say anything, but it's my duty as a respected and impartial journalist to note that, on the same day the Badgers lost 42-0 to ISU, Wisconsin high school four-timer and Who's #1 wrestler Braeden Scoles won a varsity dual match as a true Freshman for the ILLINI.

The Bono/Askren relationship not working out was just about the most predictable thing ever.

I don't think anyone needs to name call on either side.  Now, I think it is more than fair to question Bono's judgment when it comes to that entire situation.  AWA is producing the best talent in the state, and some of the best talent in the entire country overall.  Putting yourself in a situation where you might be at odds with their staff... not so wise.

I'm interested in how this plays out.  Barry Alvarez was the athletic director when Bono and Askren were hired (and when Askren resigned).  The current AD, Chris Macintosh, was associate AD during those times.  I'm not sure how much he had to do with those situations, but he would certainly be aware of them.  Also, Macintosh was a Wisconsin state wrestling champion from suburban Milwaukee (like Askren) and would have known about Askren since Ben's high school days.  I'm not an insider, so I don't know if Macintosh is an Askren fan or not.

I think Macintosh is more concerned about Fickell and the Football program right now (which I am sure they will get figured out shortly) then the few pennies the wrestling program brings in, but if I was Bono I would start to worry a bit, the recruiting and where the program is headed is concerning , but right now we have bigger fish to fry

This sounds a lot like the campfire talk when Davis "wasn't getting it done" in Madison.

is there a scenario like, he had a bunch of scholarship money and whiffed on all his recruits and just held unto it? trying to make sense of this.
