Any of You Left Wing Morons Have An Electric Car?

I heavily considered going electric with my next car purchase... I work from home and only drive to the high school and my son to his grandparents during the day, so not much driving going on, probably the ideal case for it.

Ended up not going that route since the battery tech has been evolving so much, was worried about the resale value (for instance, the used Audi e-tron values have cratered)

So I replaced my BMW M6 with a Yukon, the Yukon actually gets better gas mileage and they hold their resale value pretty decently

When Rivian truck first announced thought it looked like a great option.  Since go vacation in CO with pull RV trailer to hike, fish, bike etc thought EV plug in at RV site might make a lot of sense.  But then closer look at range pulling trailer, up hill, remote fishing roads etc it was sure can prob charge at RV site but what if not enough range to get back from day trips?  Have a couple friends that bought, great looking truck & modern options but they are flat land in town drivers.

Saw a test with two f150 fords (EV and gas ) pulling identical trailers over slightly rolling terrain. They were supposed to go 200 miles and turn around. The driver of the EV put in the data for the trailer. The data said it could go 185 miles on the battery. With in a short distance screen read 118 miles. He stopped to recharge  at 105 miles. While he was stopped the other F150 hit the 200 mile mark and turned and headed home. By the time he got home the EV was only charged to 80 percent.

And even if had the same range towing (mine gets maybe 10 towing uphill vs 21 flat no tow) the problem is if out west mountain roads etc you can find gas (gota plan for it) but you may be sol finding a charge.

This is true, especially for rural folks.  EVs make more sense in urban and suburban areas, at least for now.  It's still developing technology.  As to the numbers in the original Tweet (ironic to be criticizing EVs given the owner of Twitter's cash cow is Tesla) I am not an expert so couldn't offhand refute them, but the source is immediately suspicious.  A quick Google says that one of the main projects of the Texas Public Policy Foundation is the "Fueling Freedom" project which seeks to "explain the forgotten moral case for fossil fuels" and the TPPF is involves in all sort of the Republican issues of the day.

It’s a failing technology.  Not efficient for long distance.  Fire danger is moving toward uninsurability.  While operable for urban car owners, they are not feasible for taxi or bus service.  Difficulties in charging for apartment dwellers who have parking lots.  A pretty small market is all there is left.  Rich enough to self insure.  Don’t drive much or need to go far.  Reckless enough to put the fire hazard in your attached garage.  I’ll pass.

Yes, and that is why it is funny.  It is all narrative and rhetoric...once people actually think through the whole story of electric cars and how they are built and ultimately disposed of they aren't any better for the environment, maybe worse.  Believe me...I think we need to think about the environmental and do things to have less impact on it, but holy crap have people taken it to the extreme (using 100's of years of data to try and predict the weather of the earth that is billions of years old, not to mention all the extreme weather events that happened when there were zero humans on earth).  I'd be the first to buy a vehicle that had the least amount of impact on the environment, and it was PRACTICAL.  But EV's aren't better than gas vehicles for that reason...and EV's are 10% worse from a practicality standpoint.

We should do away with fossil fuels...eventually.  The EV and other technologies are unfortunately nowhere near ready to handle all of the transportations/travel needs of modern human society.  Largely this is due to the fossil fuel lobbies efforts to hinder advancement in that area, but it is what it is.

Can't say anything about weather, but climate change is real.  There is no prediction needed.  I'm not a militant, but we are going to see huge self inflicted damage in the very near future. 

 

Vak is right that fossil fuels need to go away and it is impractical to do so right now.  It takes a long time to change something so deeply entrenched.  We are going to be poorly prepared for this change because our society is very conservative, openly hostile to change and is corrupted by a powerful, unimaginably wealthy industry.

Not only that, but current electric production will not keep up with the demand of an all EV populace.  

Not only that, but an EV can't go as far as a gas car, takes considerably longer to recharge as opposed to gas up.  

Not only that, but EVs can't pull a trailer very far which is not manageable for businesses and truckers. 

Other than these little issues, they are great.

My personal opinion is that hybrid vehicles are a better way to go at this time.   At 50+ mpg, that is a good step forward while the other EV technology matures.   My Passat TDI gets 40 mpg and I can get that to 44 mpg if I am careful with the throttle.   This is on back country roads, not freeway driving.   Mileage would probably be better on freeway.   I use freeway infrequently.

this was the point of starting the topic.

it doesn't save money and it doesn't help the environment.
