Something needs to be done, can't give reply over 5 minutes to make the call.  Last night both wrestlers had over 5 minutes if rest, water, Gatorade and time to fix their hair, it's ridiculous.  Saw it last week too Rob/Gallager match.

Amen.

And the weird thing last night is there was no challenge that precipitated the review in the Johnson/Mauller match. The refs made the call, then doubted themselves, then took forever to review the call that no one asked them to review, then confirmed the original call.

In that case, it sure looked like the presence of video became a crutch, or a source of fear that they would be second guessed.

Totally agree. Should be absolutely no more than 90 seconds from whistle to whistle for stop/review/restart. Buzzer goes off at 80 seconds regardless if sufficient evidence is found/not found, get back to center because ref has 10 seconds to announce what they saw and start action. This isn't the NFL we aren't selling commercials throughout 3 hours of television and these long breaks are killing the flow of a match. It's an anaerobic sport - you don't see NCAA 10K races constantly stopping for review to check if someone spiked another runner thus giving everyone a break and ruining the natural flow of the race and race strategy.

Never going to happen. The technology is there. I hear ya screamin' though.

Except sports are learning that technology and getting the perfect call doesn't always make them better. Baseball has computers that can flawlessly detect if a pitch is in the strike zone or not. MLB doesn't want it because when they tested out the tech in the minors and it made the games even more boring. Baseball games ran longer and scoring went down.

The fan exhilaration of watching your favorite team dive into the end zone, seeing the ref signal touchdown and going crazy has been replaced by a subtle cheer, arm fold/fingernail chew, and wait for the refs to head to the review monitor. It does not make for a better product IMO. It takes away the spontaneous nature of sports that fans  love.

I’m all for no replays in any sport.  Even seems to impact how refs make calls …. Because it’s slightly less relevant cause we can get it on replay.

Totally agree with the premise here.  We are not always going to get it 100% correct, and we can't allow such extended breaks in wrestling as people try to get it exactly perfect.  Within 30 seconds (or thereabouts) we should be able to move forward

How about if you lose a challenge, your opponent gets to choose either three points added to his score, or to make you do wind sprints before resuming the bout.

It would be nice if there was a risk/reward scenario for the challenge. Whether it is a point, opponents choice of position or something else it would certainly make coaches be more selective with the brick toss.

Oh you mean like how freestyle awards a point to the other person if you lose your challenge? Granted those challenges also take approximately seven years to complete but at least there is a risk/reward anytime you throw the brick.

Put the refs on a shot clock and give them 45 seconds to make the call.

But just think of the entertainment if AJ were still wrestling:  30s to put on two watches & gold chains, 3m to flex, 1m talk smack at the coaches (30s each, own & opposing), 30s to take the watches/chains off, back to wrestling.  Wouldnt it be grand.  🤔

Or they could work it like soccer: Run a timer while the refs are looking at the replay and the action is stopped. Add that extra time to the end of the period.

That'd be some long periods and long matches.  Plus not how it works in soccer, the clock keeps running so the total match play time is still 90 minutes.

I like this. Defaults to no change. Cael giving them the look only makes the 45 seconds go faster.

Would it be faster if the ref just looked at the coach's depiction of what happened, think Tom with the shoe, instead of going to the video replay monitor?  🙄

It would definitely speed things up but we would still see coaches throw a "lung brick" occasionally. A combo of risk/reward (1 point for lost challenge, opponent gets to select position like after injury time, etc) and shot-clock would surely reduce the amount of challenges and make the sport more watchable.

Huh? In soccer the stoppage time gets added to the match clock after the time expires (and the teams don't know exactly how much time is added, so the half could end suddenly at any time which is exciting.

But longer periods and matches in wrestling would be the point. The replay stoppage time clock would work as a deterrent. It also takes away the idea of using challenges as lung timeouts.

Its called "stoppage time" because match play is stopped for injury time etc.  Its added on at the end so that the total match playing time is equal to 90 minutes.  Players & coaches have a pretty good idea how much time will be added and irs displayed on the board at the substitution sideline at professional level.    If stopage for injury etc for 2 min, then again for 1 minute they know ~3 minutes will be added at end of that half.
