Such a trash take

Huh?

How do you figure?  ACC, even with 7 schools, cannot compare.

How many AQ does it get, on average, per weight?

The answer is 3.5 avg the last five years.  The B1G has gotten 8.7 in that same span.

ACC isn't even as deep when taken into account the number of schools and AQs.  The B1G STILL wins that.

The original statement wasn't meant as an opinionated slight.  It was an objective fact of potential overall difficulty of schedule.

I think the reason for fewer wrestling UFC champs as of late is because there are “potential” UFC champs making a living through wrestling and don’t feel “forced” into MMA. You have head wrestling coaches making what football coaches used to make and assistants making more than their university president, as well as athletes being paid to wrestle. I’d take $100k to wrestle over $200k to get punched in the face…. After spending a few years getting punched in the face for $30k.

Thats part of it. The other part of it is the game has changed and the fighters are better. Being a strong wrestler with a threatening rear hand isnt enough to carry you to a title anymore. Which means more time is required to transition and that coupled with guys chasing wrestling success more and coming in older (as you mentioned) is not a great recipe for a highly successful MMA career.

The fighters aren't better. I'd take a Jon Jones in his prime (2012-2015) over anyone in the 205 or HWT division in a heartbeat. I'd take GSP over anyone at his weight right now. I'd take Anderson Silva over anyone at his weight. I'd take a 2015 Cormier over anyone at 205. Strickland is one of the worst champs we've ever had skill wise. Also, Gaethje disagrees that being a good wrestler with a strong read hand isn't enough to carry you to a title anymore.

The reason there might be a shift in what the current champs background is can be traced to the internationalization of the sport. Nothing more.

Wrestling generates the highest number of UFC champions historically, making up roughly 40% of all-time titleholders.

What have you done for me lately?

How about currently?

Do you think those guys learned to strike?  (Gaethje)

Get a good sprawl and/or a good escape and guys have been able to negate wrestling in the last few years.  And most of the "wrestlers" have learned to strike...

Sure, they learned to strike. But if they were looking to ground and pound instead of spending 6 months in a gym with a professional bag holder who builds them up to think they are boxers, they would do much better. Gable Steveson shouldn't be trading blows with a striker. He is an Olympic Champ and should be getting the guy to the mat and fighting the fight in his dominant positions. Chael was a good blueprint for a wrestling style that works in MMA.

I think he’s referring to it in a wholistic sense…you’re speaking of guys that are all time GREATS and dudes that are not human. Overall the talent is at a higher level…sports science, techniques training and fighter knowledge…big gap in how well rounded guys are now.

The ACC as a whole is certainly less difficult in general, but my expectation, is that VT specifically has an aggressive out of conference schedule that provides plenty of consistently high competition.  I don't expect he will see any less top 20 talent throughout the year at VT vs going to Iowa.  To me that is a bigger measure of the point of the statement.  Will be an interesting retrospective view on the level of competition he sees year over year vs what he would've gotten.

been hearing it for years, don't agree. yes, the fighters now are better than the tank abbotts of the past, but its the same level since about 2008.

Wrong.

You , of all people, have zero credibility on a thread entitled Bo Bassett.  You said the kid would never amount to an all-time great, and are now showing you know nothing about fighting.  Give yourself a time out.

Are we off the opinion that this version of Bo Bassett would fairly easily handle a prime 65kg Yianni?

It's 65kg. The only absolute result at 65 is that today's results mean absolutely nothing yesterday or tomorrow.

Old, out of retirement big ten just beat ACC in his prime for 70 bronze so that's a relevant data point when we resume this argument in a few weeks

Zain. 70 is made for him. Too bad we only get 6 Oly weights.

I get that swimming is popular in the Olympics, even if it’s a somewhat forced popularity. The only way someone should be able to win 23 Olympic Golds is if they have a bite mark on their neck and can’t be in the sunlight.

2008 was still just a throwdown… the guys who drove forklifts in the day and won bar shows at night moved up and the the better forklift driver became champ. I trained with, coached and cornered a bunch of guys in that time, from bar shows to Bellator. You can never say the greats like GSP or Anderson wouldn’t be as good today, because, if they had the training, support and incentives of today’s guys, they’d make their alternate reality selves look terrible.

But did their skill as a forklift driver ever factor into their chances of capturing a belt?

Well yea…if you lift a load off center or extend too much with it based off your capabilities you’re going to have a bad day…

Back to Bassett.  I was a big fan when he won his cadet title at some tiny weight.  He was actually very young for cadets, maybe the youngest cadet champ ever.  Also extremely dominant.

I remember that Flo reported that one of the Russian coaches requested a pic with Bo and said he wanted a pic with "future Olympic champion."

I remembered that today.  Wonder how the Russian coach is feeling about that now?
