The young man is impressive and obviously has a lot of options.

I wonder how he navigates college wrestling. Does he take the Snyder route of lighter college competition while keeping up with freestyle? Does he go all in on college?

It’ll be interesting to see.

I think his goal has always been to get a NCAA title/World Gold/Olympic Gold as fast as possible so he can transition to MMA - after 2028 he's probably done with wrestling

I’d have to imagine he’s had/is getting very little if any training in any striking or submission discipline. I don’t like that at all…

He's taking the reverse Bella Mir pathway - succeed in wrestling first, get embarrassed in MMA later

Here's his quote from 2023:

“My goal is to obviously go to college and get my degree,” Bassett said. “I also have the goal to win four NCAA titles. I think 2028 would be my best year, maybe 2032 Olympic cycle and transition into fighting.”

The article says his aunt/uncle (doesn't specify) is a BJJ trainer

I think he will toe the line every opportunity he gets, its what has gotten him to this point and I do not see him changing the approach.

His gas tank in a 5 round fight would be the stuff of nightmares for his opponents.

Yea if he can make it 5 rounds…whole different world when you get hit in the face. Reset button is always right there…

Too many wrestlers hit a bag in the gym for 6 months and think they are Mike Tyson. If wrestlers stick to wrestling, they can mitigate a strikers advantage big time.

That was Ben Askren's strategy...

I think it’s a choice about allocating time. Do you go to international events during the college season? How much time do you spend on freestyle versus folkstyle? How much time do you need to rest and when do you rest? Etc.

I obviously have no answers — but if you’re a world champ while in college, it seems like there are multiple avenues open.

theres probably a better way to accomplish it than running forward with your head down.

You think?

But other than running forward with your head down, you need to strike for at least a little.

American wrestling has been 'struggling' in the UFC for a number of reasons.  If you learn a sprawl or escape, you can negate a lot of it.

Time will tell, of course, but you could argue Bo being at VT will be a better long-term option than Iowa would have been when it comes to competing in freestyle competitions during his collegiate career.

For as much as he likes to compete, there is something to be said for not wrestling a B1G schedule year in and year out. It takes a huge toll on your body. I'm not saying the ACC is garbage, but it ain't the B1G.

Wrestling generates the highest number of UFC champions historically, making up roughly 40% of all-time titleholders.

That's a figure that's often cited, but times are changing.

Current UFC title holder sports backgrounds:

Wrestling - 2 (18%)

BJJ - 2 (18%)

Boxing - 2 (18%)

Muay Thai - 1 (9%)

Sambo - 1 (9%)

Judo - 1 (9%)

Taekwondo - 1 (9%)

MMA exclusive - 1 (9%)

I think the reason for fewer wrestling UFC champs as of late is because there are “potential” UFC champs making a living through wrestling and don’t feel “forced” into MMA. You have head wrestling coaches making what football coaches used to make and assistants making more than their university president, as well as athletes being paid to wrestle. I’d take $100k to wrestle over $200k to get punched in the face…. After spending a few years getting punched in the face for $30k.
