Here's a more full transcript that says more of what I meant. Self-awareness and maturity you just don't typically see from Hawkeyes until they go elsewhere. What a BAMF.

He also said something to the effect of “maybe I shouldn’t have said I tore my ACL because I don’t know if I’m gonna get surgery” which indicates he will be competing more

Whether Spencer Lee takes next year off to recover and either comes back for 2028 or doesn’t, what I think is going unsaid is the looming mass Exodus of 61 kg wrestlers going down to 57, rather than going up to 65. If I’m a 61, and I have the choice of making the team at 57, medaling, and sitting in pole position to sit out till the Olympic trials finals, and possibly getting that advantage over Lee,  or trying to compete at the gauntlet of 65, I’m cutting my left nut off and sucking down. And with the U23’s that Luke Lilledahl just had, I can imagine guys like Davino, Jax, Desanto, and more licking their chops at the opportunity to go down

Davino said he's going down.  Imagine Jax will too.  I could see Blaze going up.

That sounds like the weight of a lifetime coming off his shoulders.  This stuff does have a real human element for some of these guys, you see the story of the rest of their life getting written in real time.

The fact that you and a USA rep both happened to be born on the same land mass is about the most base level reason to possibly root for someone.

100%.

Your post was brutal.

Maybe your comprehension was brutal. The part that you clipped and sent to BigRed was not me at all saying that you shouldn't root for Americans because you are both Americans. It was stating the fact that to root for someone solely based on where they happened to be born is a base reason. There are plenty of factors that would be more nuanced reasons to root for/against someone than what country they rep.

I thought there was rumor or beliefs this off season that Jax might bump up as he grows…can he get lower?

i think it is fairly obvious that Jax staying at 33 for the preseason means he is planning on 57kg for 2028...

am i surprised by that?

Yes.  You made rooting interests by where you live a base reason.  That's absurd.  If someone from Cleveland roots for the Cavaliers that's not a lesser reason.  And if an American roots for the American wrestling team it's not because of a response to the red scare.  Your attempt to combat some borderline nationalism was weirdly dismissive of people rooting for the home team.  Your reply here about more nuanced reasons is just as dismissive.  If you pick based on style instead of laundry, you aren't more nuanced or better.

Base does not mean bad or lesser. It is the basis for something. The default.

"A base reason (or a foundational/basic reason) means the primary, underlying, or most fundamental cause behind something. It is the core starting point or root factor upon which an argument, decision, or event is built."

Sheesh.

So you're going to pretend you didn't mean bad or lesser.  Interesting.  How does this fit with you saying that if you think the home team represents you, it's because of 20th century propaganda meant to fight the red scare?  Did you intend that statement to mean that people fooled by old propaganda have equal motives to you?  Or maybe better motives than you?

You can't tell someone their rooting interests come from propaganda against the red scare and then claim you never said their rooting interests are lesser.  Your words weren't misunderstood.  They were clear.  If you didn't intend them, then say that and explain it better.

I literally just did that, and you told me what I meant anyway. You incorrectly inferred my sentiment. Maybe it was my wording, maybe you jumped to a conclusion that was actually said. I don't know.

My only point was that it's not the Cold War, and the for us or against us dichotomy is antiquated. It doesn't make anyone less American if they choose to root for someone from another country in a sporting event. Rooting for someone simply because they are American is literally by definition a base reason. Not a bad reason. I was simply suggesting that there are plenty of valid reasons for someone to root for RBY without being traitorous.

I never said nor suggested that it was bad or lesser to root for Americans. My original post was in response to a suggestion that someone's loyalty should be to their country rather than a school. Maybe that helps you understand my point, maybe not. Either way, take is easy, brother.

Shultz defected from American and wrestled for another country or just trained in Russia for a bit?

This is also a good point as to what might be going into Spencer’s decision making to get surgery or not.  If he does, I’m guessing he’s probably out next year then loses his opportunity to gain that advantage for 2028.

Ironically, my "dumb take" mentioned the people who pay for international wrestlers to train at US clubs and beat Americans...

He was chirping at the RTC coaches at Beat the Streets after he wrestled Chamizo for coaching and financing non-Americans.  Prob didn't use the word "traitor" but that is also part of what makes it a "hot take."

Chamizo isn’t an American though.   Did Burroughs make any comments about Americans training in America but representing other countries (I honestly have no idea)? I know people like Pyles (obviously not in the same stratosphere as Burroughs) have.
