Is Morningstar involved in extra curriculars with his athletes?

I didnt comment on that, did I? So it follows I wasnt comparing them on that basis. If Perry is getting up to shenanigans with his athletes then that is very damning. If he is encouraging poor lifestyle choices then I can definitely see how that could affect injury rates. My initial post was merely to express surprise that a secondary assistant could have such an influence on the training program

You have certainly made a great point for not feeling much sympathy for Chris Perry in this mess, but that doesn't change the fact that this is the first recruiting scandal I have heard since the introduction of the transfer portal despite the rampant discussion across all sports of the "wild west" and constant recruiting violations that are going unchecked. The fact that Iowa State wrestling is being "reprimanded," but I haven't heard of any sanctions against a major basketball or football program is what makes the whole thing a joke. I'd guess you'll find violations at most major programs if you're willing to look hard enough.

I think the RTC factor makes wrestling a bit unique, as compared to basketball or football.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

The difference between compliance with the rules and violation of the rules right now is an absolute joke is the point that I'm making.

If Lane Kiffin says to whomever, "Go get me this guy. Here is our offer." That is innocence.

If Lane Kiffin calls the kid and says, "Here is our offer." That is a violation.

It would make way more sense to just cut the "veil of ignorance" act out of college sports and just let the teams do what they're doing without having to dance around the technicalities that are completely antiquated and useless at this point.

The rules were put into place to stop schools from poaching players from other teams. Now, everyone is a free agent and being poached at all times, the only difference between a "clean" and "dirty" program is how diligent they are about adhering to the technicalities of what a court of law can "stick" to you.

I'm watching The Wire for the first time and it's essentially the same process as when the same guy doesn't touch both the money and the drugs in a transaction. We all know it's a drug trade, but they can get off on a technicality. In college sports, we all know it's tampering and poaching, but they get off on a technicality. In college sports, it's dumb because the NCAA is setting the rules that it's making these programs dance around.

Everyone is dogging on the NCAA but Perry should get full blame here. I hate to say it as an OSU alum but the dude has attracted trouble ever since he got into coaching. When joined OSU staff our dudes started getting hurt - a lot. Like several season ending injuries a year. And they started wrestling very defensive and conservative and the only pin move anybody used was Perry's arm bar literally for several years. It was a very boring time as an OSU fan, and concerning because obviously the athletes were not getting trained properly for wrestling or for their health. Then he gets Daton in trouble by giving his Dad illegal supplements, Daton almost got a 4 year ban from NCAA wrestling and he should have been fired for that. Then our top recruits aren't performing well and all the "OSU doesn't develop its athletes" stuff comes out. Then he balloons up and puts on like 100 pounds and nobody on staff says anything which was so weird. Then rumors fly about Perry living with his athletes, getting wasted all the time in Stillwater, and being a general nuisance. Then the coaching switch to DT, he sweet talks Christian Carroll into following him to ISU, and a few months later CC bails. Then he joins the ISU RTC, Iowa State gets a bunch of injuries that same season. Then there's reports about him contacting athletes inappropriately - this was a year ago, if we knew it on forums then he is obviously being too obvious. Now he's in trouble with the NCAA... I mean at some point you have to give the guy credit for not being a great influence

meeehhh, some of this is true, and some of it is not. Perry for sure partied, ALOT. Hell, I was out a few times and drank with him. There was no sweet talking CC, he was leaving OSU, that I know. On that topic, he was a pretty weak minded kid, to be honest. There are stories at ISU where he did not want to cut the weight, and he would cry because he didn't want to do it. Now, there is no shame in crying, I guess, but I was shocked this big time recruit was so weak minded. Anyway, I had not heard about the living with athletes, but not shocked if true. I don't know why you are blaming injuries on Perry, he barely went live at ISU. He did some, but not enough to "hurt" kids. I think he is a waste of talent, and knowledge. I was told he was the best technical coach out of all the coaches at ISU, so take that for what it is worth. BUT HE IS A BLOCK HEAD.  I thought you would be more talking about Brayden Thompson, than anyone else. Rumors were going around, he has been on Thompson since he got to ISU, take that for what it is worth. I will leave this here, and this is not a flex. I told Dresser to becareful with Perry, good recruiter, great knowledge of the sport, but carries a heavy bag with him. I don't feel sorry for ISU at all, they knew what they were getting into.

I'd love to be a weak minded NCAA AA with three more chances to AA.

There is talent, and then there is mentally tough. I can show you AA from both sides. I guess I am in the pool of you got to be tough to compete in this sport. I know I am not the only one, there is a reason he left ISU...Good luck this year with your Badgers.

I didn't blame him for injuries. But athlete injuries sure seemed to follow him from OSU to ISU. So maybe he's not smashing them physically but instead suggesting poor training or recovery techniques.

CC was mad that Coleman got the boot, then he was staying at OSU, then he bailed to ISU once Perry was courted by ISU. They were homies. If Perry wanted the best for CC, he would've encouraged him to stay. That last sentence is speculation of course but its hard to imagine CC going to ISU without Perry also going there.

Probably, but this might be more damning for ISU. If looking-the-other-way is the NCAA's standard operating procedure re NIL, then what would the Cyclones have to do to make make someone notice?

If what has been reported is true, then Chris Perry contacted UNC wrestlers before they entered the portal. Someone reported the contact and it was outside of what is allowed. You can certainly say that it was lazy and careless by ISU, but we see guys enter the portal and have a new home immediately pretty often, so it's safe to say these things are happening regularly. If ISU just had someone "without ties" to the program reach out to the wrestlers, then they would have had plausible deniability and wouldn't have been punished.

What ISU did wasn't something that isn't already happening frequently, they were just too lazy or careless to make sure that they went about it in a way where they couldn't be held responsible for "tampering."

It all worked out I guess, he would not start at OSU today, and he would not start at ISU today, Wyoming is a good spot.

you boys are loading up, it will soon be a two horse race IMO. OSU will not have any drop off, PSU could with all of this off the mat issues.

Hate to see Metcalf have to deal with anything related to this just as he is getting going. I think he is going to do a great job. The NCAA picking ISU wrestling out of a hat and deciding to enforce some rules that 99% of all other sports are violating is lame. The NCAA is dead and are in a death spiral.

The funny part to me, ISU being the first to be in trouble. Milner (app st) was getting phone calls the first year he AA, while he was at nationals. I won't name the team(s) but that is factual. The Gardner Webb 133 (Davis) last year, had a Big 12 coach, come directly up to him and made him an offer if he would portal. This shit has been going on for years, I guess Perry is just too dumb he got caught. There are 2 BIg 12 teams that are TERRIBLE about recruiting violations. This might slow them down now, who knows.

I can name 3 wrestlers right now that left their program and they were contacted about going into the portal. All 3 came from a smaller college, and were not on the radar until they made it to nationals, then the phone starting ringing.

How much of the punishment was due to the fact that Northern Colorado had an admin on the committee that adjudicated the situation?

Please tells us who and how related.  I have not seen a direct link.

One of the early press releases had a list of the people who levied the punishment.

Noton retired from president position in 2018, would not expect her to be a fan of wrestling or any reason to be biased in serving on the three member committee.
