NCAA ordered to give all athletes who used their 4th year eligibility this last season a 5th year. What lineups does this change now?

I don't think this is a final decision because NCAA can appeal. But who knows. Curious to see who would forego that extra year.

I'm curious as well. It obviously would impact other sports where redshirts aren't the standard part of a college career. Levi and Jesse are the only two wrestlers of note that this would effect. After a quick scroll through the 2022 big board, I don't see any other AAs from 2022 that ran out of eligibility after last season. Pretty much everyone from that class has used one form of redshirt or another at this point.

If Levi actually comes back, Jayden James will likely wrestle at the NLWC without enrolling, pushing his clock back a year.

It's kind of wild that Levi is only 21 (turns 22 on Tuesday) and has placed 2-1-3-1 already.

Is it only guys that haven’t redshirted?

Sounds like it.  But if the 2022 guys can get a 5th why can't the 2021 guys sue to get one?  Where does it end?

Shouldn't Dake be able to get a 5th?

I don't understand why they are retroactively granting any eligibility. I don't think guys like Lilledahl, Joey Blaze, Shapiro, etc. should even get an option for either opting into the 5 for 5 or the old rules. They entered college and made their decision about foregoing a RS with the expectation of only getting four years. Honestly, I don't think any of this years freshman class should get an extra year either.

That being said, I assume the NCAA is just going to stand by the "age" limitation the new rules have set in place and since those younger guys from the class of 2022 are still under the age restriction, the NCAA isn't going to fight that legal battle because they will still be getting close to what they are trying to accomplish.

Drake redshirted in 2023.

Caliendo wouldn't be eligible. Per the University of Iowa:

  • Wrestled unattached in 2021-22 in his redshirt season, going 14-2 overall

Dake.  Kyle Dake.

Activist judges at it again. I hope the NCAA just cancels all championships for the year. It’s the only way they will regain any authority to enforce any rules.

They did not. They could RS anytime. They were counting on RS's, Olympic RS's, Medical RS's.

I believe It's only class of 2022 athletes who did not redshirt and could get a 5th year of eligibility like the 5 for 5 going forward. It's really just including this years seniors who used their 4 years w/o a redshirt. If they redshirted they already get this coming year.

HS class of 2022 is a specific sandwich year. Classes of 20 and 21 got an extra covid year. Classes of 23 and beyond get 5.

I wish we could go back to the “5 to wrestle 4” way. Redshirt available. 4 eligible years. Take away medical and Olympic redshirts. If you get hurt, it sucks. If you want Oly gold, wrestle how Kyle Snyder did, and minimize your load.

All athletes from the high school class of 2025 and prior should just be held to the old system. They all entered college and made their initial eligibility decisions under the same rules that said you have the option to redshirt but only 4 postseasons to compete. The only athletes eligible for 5 post-seasons should be the high school classes of 2026 and beyond.

Right now, the NCAA is basically just saying "If you didn't redshirt, SURPRISE, you now get an extra year of eligibility. If you did use a redshirt, tough luck because you could have just competed and it wouldn't have costed you anything."

Caleb Henson for example spent this year in redshirt for literally no reason. Henson could have just competed as normal this year and still been able to wrestle next year. Now that decision essentially just robbed him of an NCAA tournament.

It's just strange to retroactively reward/punish redshirt decisions that were made under the previous rules.

Mendez chose to use his 4 years in 4 years and gets a surprise gift of a 5th year of eligibility after the fact.

Mendoza only redshirted this season because there has (other than 2021) never been an incentive to forego a redshirt in terms of eligibility. Then, less than 5 months after the post season, the NCAA announces that he actually could have just wrestled without any sacrifice of eligibility.

TLDR; Mendez gets rewarded for a decision made 4 years ago before 5 for 5 was even a thought, and Mendoza essentially sacrificed a year of NCAA eligibility because the rules changed 5 months after conferences. It's just odd.

I'm curious as to why? If a guy is going to be in college for 5 years, why not just let them compete the whole time? A system where you voluntarily sit your best wrestler at a weight is pretty odd when you actually think about it.
