HS class of 2022 is a specific sandwich year. Classes of 20 and 21 got an extra covid year. Classes of 23 and beyond get 5.

But Hamiti & Dake had to wrestle tFr year and didnt get 7 years only 4 ... it just ain't fair  🤨  there oughta be a lawsuit!

What about kids in Architecture ... thats a 5 year program.  If kids in a 4 year program get 5 in 5 shouldn't the Architectural students get 6 in 6?  🤔

Saw a post on Instagram saying Mendez is going 149 next year and is coming back. It was from the NAIA wrestler kid who posts a lot.

Instagram

I was just about to ask whether the cut was a thing or not and/or if he was considering bumping up. Would love to see him run it back with Vega. On the other hand Mendez vs Bassett (or Forest if he bumps up???) would be spicy as well

Activist judges at it again. I hope the NCAA just cancels all championships for the year. It’s the only way they will regain any authority to enforce any rules.

This has nothing to do with activist judges.

It's actually a ruling that's pretty simple to understand in the context of the COVID years and the new ruling. This is the group that was left out.

No one should be surprised by this. If the NCAA appeals, they'll likely lose. They're better off saving their lawyer fees and letting the schools manage rosters.

I would imagine someone like Jesse Mendez would want another crack at Vega.

I wouldn't get too excited. I expect this will get appealed and who knows what will happen.

Appeals and wins in the court system are the holes that get poked and ruin all the rules and guidelines put in place. So, yes, expect exactly that to happen. Just takes one win in court for the snowball to start rolling

I'm sure in sports like basketball and football where you don't redshirt your true starters this is much more relevant. On the wrestling landscape, Levi and Jesse are the only relevant guys that this ruling effects.

I suppose since they only had 4 years of college athletics vs the 5 that all redshirts/covid guys get, it makes some sense. It's still crazy that they'd retroactively grant an extra year to guys who had 4 full seasons but didn't give an extra year to guys who had their final post-seasons cancelled.

If Levi actually comes back, Jayden James will likely wrestle at the NLWC without enrolling, pushing his clock back a year.

It's kind of wild that Levi is only 21 (turns 22 on Tuesday) and has placed 2-1-3-1 already.

How does that work? Is it because James is young? I thought the rules are something like the clock starts when you graduate HS or turn 18 or something? How is he able to defer and extend his timeline/prevent it from starting at the same time as others in his class? Genuinely curious as I don’t know the rules well enough inside and out, and thought the above was how it worked, essentially to prevent exactly this?

Riffing off of that, how is that not the same as like a Grey Shirt or whatever Ivy’s would do to stash a wrestler for a year or something? Again, I was under the impression we were moving away from any of that being allowed. Showing my whole ass here, but I’m confused how this would work, and if it’s allowed, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be the new form of “red shirt” for all wrestlers under the new 5/5 rules. Someone halp

49 was already going to be one of the weights to watch. Add in Mendez and it could be one of the best weights we've seen in a long time.

2x National Champ - Mendez

National Champ - Vega

National Champ - Valencia

National Champ - Henson

Finalist and 3x AA - Van Ness

AA - Block

AA - Wasilewski

AA - Frost

Then guys like Mendoza, Larkin, Buesgens, Joy, whoever gets the spot at Michigan, etc.

How many weights all-time have had 4 guys that have stood atop the podium going into the season? I can think of a handful that have had 3, but not 4.

Headline - Van Ness.. one of the best to never win a title.

I believe they changed the original idea from age/graduation date to simply focusing on age. A wrestler's clock doesn't start until the September 1st that follows their 19th birthday. Jayden just recently turned 18 so his clock wouldn't start until he enrolls in college or September 1st of 2027.

edit: You're hardly showing your ass by not being aware of the ever changing landscape. Those were good questions if you missed the amendment. It does seems like many athletes could do this if I'm not mistaken on the rules here though. I could be wrong.

I wonder since 5 for 5 only applies to D1, could a D2/3 kid that has completed their 4 years with no red shirt now transfer to a D1 school and get a 5th year?

Thank you for clarifying, I did miss the amendment it would appear.

So rather than holding kids back to be super seniors, now we will bump them up to get that free off year of bonus training? ☯️ kidding, sort of.

Great question, and my guess would be yes, very simply put. If you can get into D1 athletics, then you are granted 5 instead of 4, so the 4 years at other schools would count and then you’d be granted a 5th for joining D1, would be my guess.

What will they call the extra year?  Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, ?  Assisted living?

I like Assisted Living or Assisted Education.

I believe this is the right decision based on the COVID year. If you remember the COVID year didn't even benefit the seniors that lost their final tournament - it benefited those who came after. It was dumb not to give seniors their year back. Now those who never took a redshirt will get a 5th year like those coming next. I don't have a problem with that. The 5 for 5 is much simpler and reduces all the waiver/RS/GS/MS/OLYS mess.  I believe this only affects about 6 NQ (including Haines and Mendez) and probably a number of non-starters.

It really doesn't for greyshirt. Most graduating high schoolers will be 18 and can grey shirt if they wanted to without burning a year of eligibility. It should prevent students from being held back for wrestling purposes.

I like Assisted Living, but I guess it could also be called Masters,  couldn't it?
