With both Michigan and VT having solid roster rebuilds through recruiting and add ons.  Which staff will be under the most pressure to climb up the podium?

Posted

I wish Minnesota was under more pressure. It's almost as if administration acknowledge the J Robinson era was a fluke of competing for titles for 20 years than wanting to be a regular contender.

With Fugitt, Mendoza, Steed, and Sinclair, Mizzou has 3 returning AA's and another good shot with Mendoza.  But they have finished outside the top ten for the last 3 seasons, not where Mizzou fans are used to being.  Also, too many Mizzou guys lately have either regressed, transferred, or looked HEW'ed out in their final season. Smith is going into his 28th year at Mizzou, and he needs to show that he can keep up with the changes in the sport.

From watching and listening to everyone speak here are my observations on this....

Always have pressure - Iowa, Oklahoma (with in state rivals competing for recruits, there is always pressure to perform. Iowa especially, to make the podium is not good enough at times)

Should have some pressure - Rutgers (37th at the NCAA this past year), Missouri (14th this past year, but have seen a lot of top talent fizzle at the end), Cornell (finished behind Columbia and 1/2 pt ahead of Penn, and 1.5pts ahead of Princeton,  ivies are closing the gap on the Big Red)

Out of the box pressure - Virginia Tech (with all the talent coming into the room next year, either a team trophy or justification with redshirts will be expected. Too much talent to only finish 5-10 as a team)

Some good examples of underperformance compared to resources & expectations.

Most of the names mentioned have solid relationships with the big money donors in their programs, which will save them. If they're not going to complain to the AD, they'll stay off their radar.

Smith is building another great roster. The only pressure he is under is self imposed.

VT if they don't live up to the roster hype, (I think they will tho.)

So no one knows the spending of the top finishers in the tournament. I’m saying no coach is under pressure if the AD doesn’t pony up.

Take I have not heard....to me it looked liked J Rob's teams were all juiced insanely.

I agree that things are looking up, but results speak louder than potential.  Things need to improve.

Question, do the top 5 finishers this last season spend the most on their rosters?

Not sure about 5, but I think it’s a safe bet the top 4 (with my guess as to the order) is PSU, Iowa, tOSU, OK State

Are these different numbers than what you are referring too?

May be an image of basketball, football and text that says 'ឯកសយ៍ Money well spent? Saturday Night Lights op 10 NCAA wrestling program spending (FY25): 1. Penn State $7,865,075 2. The problem is we don't know what these ^^^ numbers include.  Are they total, do they include NIL, what's just the operating (coaches, travel, facilities, scholarships  etc) component, what is just NIL?

First time seeing that graphic.  If those correlate to NIL spending, then my top 4 was correct it would just be the order of 2-4 that’s different.

NIL and revenue sharing are completely different things. NIL is not paid by the school, not part of the budget, and you’re not likely to ever find any accurate numbers. Coaches can’t offer kids “NIL”. NIL is outside money and/or from collectives and has to go through the clearinghouse. It is the dark money of college sports that’s sort of getting cleaned up.

Revenue sharing is $20.5mm for the entire athletic department, paid by the athletic department, sometimes part of the sport’s budget, sometimes part of the overall athletic budget in a separate section, and it’s split up between sports in different ways at different schools. Revenue sharing is the money coaches can offer kids.

Quite a few schools (Michigan, VaTech) have a 75-15-5-5 split (FB-MBB-WBB-All other sports). Some schools prioritize different sports, some give an even smaller percentage to the “other sports” (Rutgers splits 2% amongst other sports), some give nothing to “other sports”. Ohio State and Nebraska only give rev share to FB, MBB, WBB and VB. However, (some) athletic departments fund the full 30 scholarships instead of paying wrestlers.

PSU’s revenue sharing was $1.45mm… word is PSU splits theirs evenly amongst the 30-man roster.. ~$50k/ea. Iowa and Iowa State”s rev shares were just shy of $1mm. OKState has rev share for wrestling, but I haven’t seen their split anywhere (I think seven sports get a cut… obviously the vast majority to football). I haven’t come across any other teams getting a significant rev share allocation.

Excellent clarification.  The previous post showed what each school spent on the program.  This includes coaching salaries to singlets.  The revenue sharing splits by each school are fascination.  PSU provides a nice chunk to wrestling, while simultaneously providing enough funding to maintain the worst record in both men's and women's basketball.  😉

For some crazy reason, schools like OSU, Michigan, and Iowa also want to have quality basketball teams, too.  Crazy.

Yeah, winning titles in Football and MBB will make your AD a ton of money, especially with both sports now being tournament style post-seasons. I’m hopeful that Michigan has a nice bump in FY26 after winning the basketball title, and hopefully an improved football program coming down the pipe. As it pertains to revenue sharing, having high quality basketball and football programs appears to lend itself well to making good money from the revenue sharing with the Big Ten, so perhaps schools with a great to elite level at both will start to eventually separate their ADs from others, or perhaps be able to boost some of the non Rev sports around them

Real pressure will be on Cael to set another Scoring Record.

Yeah that would be a pipe dream for the Indiana wrestling team.

The crazy thing is the gap between Indiana and Ohio State in football was as great as the gap now between Indiana and Penn State in wrestling and they got it done!
