Many athletes have spoken about their faith, taking advantage of a post match win interview (such as after the NCAA finals) to profess their belief and yet, to my memory, none of them have elicited anything near the type of reaction that Brooks has. Jason Nolf, David Carr, Stephen Buchanan, Alex Marinelli are just the few wrestlers that come to mind who where very vocal about their faith in Christ. Some of these wrestlers have their fair share of detractors but I have yet to see anybody criticize them for their religion (other than Marinelli, who is ragged on for everything, including the audacity to have a wife, apparently). Carr seems to be a universal favorite in fact. The only thing I have seen negative about him are jokes about his boogers. What Brooks did was obnoxious, pompous, "you-are-wrong" preaching. He could have been Muslim, buddhist, rastafarian, hell, he could have been preaching about veganism and it still would have come off as obnoxious due to the tenor and intensity of the message. If anything, if he were Muslim the reaction would have been far more heated. you also have the interview where he said his underhook "was from the holy Spirit" and therefore superior to Yazdani's who only got his from "some coach". Not only is that obnoxious, I would say that ventures on the edge of delusion. Then there's the Basch interview following Olympic trials which has been brought up a few times. Dissing on your teammate is one thing (note that this was the eggsact thing Bartlett was dumped on by PSU fans when he made his first and only message board post) but then to claim DT isn't faithful enough in the same breath as comparing yourself to Jesus was just a wild ride of delusion. Finally, have you seen his YouTube channel? I haven't watched nearly every video because they are literally painful to get through but the parts that aren't legitimately unhinged are so aggressive in their "you are lacking" (therefore I know the way) messaging it makes a man wince. You mesh these things together, along with a few other interviews I've seen over the years, and you get the portrait of a generally unlikeable person who loves preaching and telling people about all the ways they are lacking (implying he is better) while breaking rules repeatedly. In all the videos I've seen of Brooks, he does not come across as a guy that is fun to be around. That's why I called him an asshole and that's the crux of this discussion. To try and twist this into something political is smooth brained and pu$$y sh!t Now to be fair, I thought Brooks came off as very personable in this interview and I felt true sympathy when he talked about his struggles this past year. I can no longer say that Brooks comes off as an obnoxious asshole in every video I've seen of him. Perhaps he's turning a corner -

I've given up on expectations of rational behavior from the current vehicle house occupant and his minions. I'd have a mountain of paperwork to fill out and some explaining to do though.

I'm curious because this could affect me since I wasn't born in this country. Hopefully sanity prevails and the supreme court realizes what kind of a mess it would create if they ruled against it.

Figured this deserved its own thread. What do we think the Supreme Court will decide on this? I’m not sure. I’m no legal expert, but the “BuT iT wAs OnLy InTeNdEd FoR sLaVeS!” argument doesn’t seem very credible to me, as the actual amendment says nothing about slaves and the way it is written is very broad: https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-14/ All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. However, the main case considered to set the precedent for this is probably where Trump has a better argument: Wong Kim Ark. Bro- Are you even aware of how you respond to people in the "non-wrestling" threads? I mean for the love, in this thread alone you clearly have a problem with people that are thinking differently than you. This statement by you is complete hypocrisy. The problem with Brooks is the arrogance that comes through while preaching- it was the same when he said something to the effect or implied that David Taylor wasn't godly enough. That's what is annoying as hell to people. The same way when yourself and others preach about how trump and maga is essentially your religion or prophet. The problem isn't Christianity, it's his penchant for being at the height of pompousness when droning on about it... Carr is equally if not further down the religious continuum and he doesn't act like that and comes across way more likable. I suppose everyone is a hypocrite to some extent when it comes to believing in their own value system and reacting negatively to a differing of opinion and you my friend are no exception- far from it. -

Isaiah Powe is an interesting one; he took a 25 - 2 record into NCAAs his true freshman year, went into the portal but then returned to Chattanooga. . . and followed it up w/ an 0-3 sophomore year. To be fair to him, his 3 losses were Mendez, Latona, and Eligh Rivera of Princeton; all in November and then he went MIA after that and back in the portal. Something seems off in all of that but there's also some real potential in the right room. -

I suspect it comes from the philosophy that is drilled into them from a young age that it’s best to let your wrestling do the talking on the mat rather than talk a lot off the mat. It probably is ok for wrestling but perhaps less so for mma etc where hyping things up is conducive to the excitement around match and financial benefits.

I think — though I’m not sure — that Yazdani himself has never said he won’t wrestle at 86kg anymore — that seems to have come from the national team coaches. All he’s said is that, after his surgery, his doctor advised him not to cut weight anymore. I still believe Yazdani plans to stay at 86kg, at least for the upcoming Olympics. Honestly, my confusion mostly comes from Yazdani’s usual vague way of speaking. He always has this cautious self-censorship — which seems like a contagious condition a lot of people have caught. The only Iranian wrestler I know who actually says things you can make sense of is Amir Mohammad Yazdani. The rest of them just stick to the same old clichés every time they talk.

This is the most tired and trite of simultaneously defeatest and enabling comments you can make. It’s a wrestling specific issue in that this is a wrestling forum and we are talking about wrestling, and we care about the continued health and safety of the sport, and all athletes therein. The excessively physical nature of the sport needn’t be expounded upon, but respecting and protecting the physical wellbeing of your opponents is a fundamental tenet of the sport in a way that is extremely rare in sport. I’m pretty sure that is self-evident though. -

They’re all *I poop my pants, don't laugh at me*ty, sex-based or sex-adjacent issues of power dynamics, all of which got covered up, swept under the rug, or otherwise ignored or minimized by other responsible adults, oftentimes for years even decades. The issue is that many of the people who were committing these acts, hiding these messes, or sidestepping responsibility for being a responsible adult are people who have been lionized as a considerable part of modern wrestling lore. That is all the same issue, and it is not a small one. The fact that in the span of a month Snyder’s situation went from “oh nooo bad bad bad” to “[shoulder shrug] eh, not much to write home about all things considered” is the big whiplash aspect of this. -
