The NCAA is the governing body of college athletics. Realignment doesn't eliminate the NCAA, but if you think this sport can survive without an organization like the NCAA, you are wrong. What realignment will do though is eliminate a number of the programs that are currently in P5 conferences but will see huge revenue drops. The issue with the decrease in popularity of the sport (fewer fans watching NCAA wrestling and attending duals) is that as wrestling becomes less popular, it will be earlier on the chopping block. About ten years ago, it looked like NCAA wrestling was increasing in popularity. The way the regular season has been managed has completely screwed up any momentum that we had though.

Yeah, what other venue provides athletic scholarships to athletes? The net value that wrestlers get from NCAA wrestling from those scholarships is in the tens of millions per year. Then consider how much the NCAA subsidizes training for international athletes who also coach (think of the cost of PSU facilities). And don't ignore salaries for coaches so wrestlers can compete into their 30s and know they have a job after. Please provide an example of how wrestling can exist in this country in any form that is close to what we currently enjoy if you eliminate NCAA wrestling. You say there are a 100 different ones-I ask you to provide one logical one. Are we going to have hundreds of athletes train at the OTC funded by some rich donor? This whole "things are going to be ok if the NCAA goes away" makes no sense to me.

The problem is that 95% of the season is meaningless, and the coaches have essentially stopped wrestling the regular season because of it. Without the regular season, the only events that "matter" no longer have any storylines attached to them because there were very few prior matchups of significance. There was a huge drop in ratings last year for the NCAA finals, and I expect this year to be just as bad if not worse.

Interest by fans in NCAA wrestling is what I’m talking about.

NCAA wrestling will still exist, but there will be fewer teams and fewer opportunities for athletes. It's a shame, but the sport seems to be decreasing in popularity anyway over the past 10 years or so with the lack of interest in the regular season making NCAAs really the only event worth watching. The problem with that approach is because of the lack of the regular season, we lose the drama associated with NCAAs. Also, the transfers only magnify this problem because it decreases parity and the athletes are less associated with their universities. There is unfortunately no incentive for the major programs that control the sport to work to increase its popularity overall (vs ensure their own success at NCAAs).

Seattle's effort to help gig workers hurts gig workers

I’m giving my opinion on how shit Uber eats is compared to the prior model. If you like paying 20 bucks to have food delivered, feel free to think otherwise. -

Nope. The delivery apps now go and pick up food and any item really from anywhere. It expanded the service of delivery and made it much worse in the process. -

Chinese restaurants in the year 2010. -

This isn’t true. The cost is higher because of the apps needing to offset costs. A restaurant employing one driver was not a huge cost that was offset by in person dining. -

What are you talking about? The prior system had the driver employed by the restaurant instead of people driving around in cars. The restaurant benefitted because they got more business. The app system is awful because it added a middleman that increases the cost for the consumer. -

Does anyone else think Uber eats, doordash, etc, have completely ruined food delivery? Not so long ago, we could get pizza, chinese food, and sushi delivered for about a 2 dollar fee (sometimes no fee at all) and then 5 dollar delivery tip. Now you are paying at least 15-20 dollars extra for every delivery when you factor in the higher prices that are in the app, the fees, and the tip. -
This is true if you ignore the existence of Tom Brands.

Yeah, like that Iowa wrestler Dan Gable.

If you assume everyone listed as a senior has at least two years of eligibility remaining, you will usually be right.

He is one of maybe three people who could bring Iowa back to what it should be.

This doesn’t even account for the transfers that will come in. It’s premature to think there’s going to be a logjam because we don’t even have results from NCAAs. History tells us that anyone who isn’t a top 5 or so AA is likely to be replaced by a better recruit or transfer. That’s just how PSU operates-perform or leave. I don’t see why he is likely to be in the lineup again unless he has made huge strides behind the scenes. Why move Mesenbrink up or down? He’s at the perfect weight for his long term goals.

Does Sparks get paid for saying resilite?
billyhoyle replied to headshuck's topic in College Wrestling
I think that’s because or the Astrodome. I don’t think the Houston Astros are the supplier of artificial turf. Maybe I’m wrong though. -
Many pointed out how risky the decision was and how being a great wrestler is far from a guarantee of success in MMA. But yes, the MMA fans were happy to see a 19-year-old give up on college or olympic athletics to fight in the minor leagues of MMA.
-
There was a lot of talk/reports at the time of Pico/his family agreeing to some really awful contracts, where their training was being paid for with the expectation that he'd go to MMA eventually. Who knows how true that was or how much pressure was put on him for the decision. What's obvious in retrospect is that the decision was a terrible one career-wise. Here's an example that covers that contract a bit. https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/whittier-teen-has-olympic-dream-contract-with-mma-league/

It’s strange and I’ve never seen it for any other sport (who makes basketball courts? I have no clue). -
They have to skip 165 because that’s the match that shows how foolish they are to continue to rank Messsbrink 7th. Maybe if we are lucky they will move him to 6th now.
-
If the unfinished senior season of Seth Lugo is the best example of “Iowa trained,” these days, that is a problem. At one point this same coach turned a couple under the radar transfers from Blacksburg Virginia into NCAA champions. Now he’s plugging in blood round/low AA transfers to replace other bloodhound level guys who also happened to have a gambling problem.

Concerning Situation in Pakistan
billyhoyle replied to uncle bernard's topic in Non Wrestling Topics
The intercept is not close to a reliable source, especially when it comes to speculation about US Foreign policy. So unless you have a better source than that for the US supporting a coup in Pakistan, you might as well be quoting infowars (they’re kind of like the liberal version of infowars).
