I thought I read about this ~a year ago. A friend(the one crazy SOB who WOULD probably try and do some stupid shit like that) sent me a link. I could have sworn it was ESPN. And he sent it because we'd both known someone who'd been attacked by a Grizzly. I came across a black bear in a pretty remote area once...about half a mile away from where I was coming and a quarter mile where I was going. I just saw...I don't even remember how many Cubs, but I know there were at least 2(I was about 11-12). And they came out on this 4-wheeler trail that I rode all the time up by my families land(Uncle, Grandparents, Dads). I knew enough to freeze up and then just start walking backward and hope that Mother Bear was not coming out behind me. Finally I saw it walk out onto the road, look right at me and...just completely dismiss me as a threat. It probably came out ~30 seconds later, so I don't know how far I'd backpedaled in the meantime. It wasn't a big bear. Maybe 250? 500 pound Grizzly? I can't even fathom...and the guts it took for that kid to throw his body against the Grizzly...crazy. One of the ballsy-est stories I've ever heard.

Oh, and with regard to the Police, I would guess it comes from the Republicans voting against Biden's Budget to increase funding to Police departments and hire over 100,000 new Police.
-
Well...the IRS one is just pure fiction. They're not adding 80,000 new IRS "agents." They've got about 80,000 employees now and 10,000 of them are agents. They're trying to hire 80,000 employees because they're understaffed and are expected to lose 50K+ in employees to retirement. Just...right off the top, a large chunk of that money is going to updating their infrastructure and adding actual representatives you can speak to on the phone. 4 years ago I had a plan with a 5600 dollar deductible. Never went out of network, had a surgery in January...wrote a check for the exact amount for my deductible. Kept the receipts, could not actually speak with my insurance company in person without a 5-6 hour wait. Yet they were still able to just take another 4K out of my tax returns because the IRS had antiquated systems and is extremely understaffed. Took over 3 years to get my money back because I couldn't actually get a person on the phone at the IRS. This puts them around the number of actual employees they had in the early 90s. But it wasn't quite as fun of a scare tactic as "80,000 new agents all at once coming to take your money away."

Iowa got shafted in the NCAA seeding
scourge165 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I've thought about it as long as I care to. I was responding to your statement that you don't think ANYONE has any problem with Parker Keckeisen as the #1 seed. Well...I do. 2X defending Champ, won the B1Gs when Keckeisen was a Sr in HS as a True Freshmen. He's got 3 losses in his career. Keckeisen and Hidlay ALSO have losses this year. No good reason for Brooks to NOT be the #1 seed. There's very little common sense used in these seedings. @PortaJohn follows up by saying because he "only" Wrestled X number of matches, he was seeded where he should have been...despite being the best in his weight and probably top 3 pound for pound. So he knows it's stupid as well. He's saying it right there. He's proven he's the best at this weight. Look at Brooks matches this year? They're mostly top 20 except for Iowa(not his fault), should have been, Wisconsin...and 2 of his first 3 vs Lock Haven and...someone else. Keckeisen has 6 total. So in fewer matches Wrestling in the B1G, Brooks has more quality wins. And a lot of Keckeisen's big wins are over B1G Wrestlers in much closer matches. -
35 countries demand ban of Russia at the 2024 Olympics
scourge165 replied to BaldAt23's topic in International Wrestling
You're setting precedents and determining who should be allowed to compete. I think kicking Russia out while China engaging in ethnic cleansing with the Uyghurs is more than a "whataboutism," it's called a standard. Is one worse because they're fighting back while the other has no opportunity to do so? Because the US and Nato isn't supplying them tens and tens of billions of dollars for ammunition and all types of weapons. Yes, "whataboutism" is a valid response when you say who should and shouldn't be allowed to participate basaed upon their Nations actions. In fact, seems like ignoring one atrocity in the name of whataboutism is just puts the line in an even more ambiguous place. What have the Dagestani's done to be banned from the Olympic other than kinda being part of Russia? -
Iowa got shafted in the NCAA seeding
scourge165 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I have zero problem with Yianni, but a little problem with Parker Keckeisen getting the #1 over Brooks. More like a mild disagreement, but it seemed like a bit silly to seed Brooks 3rd behind two guys he's beaten evertime because of a early season loss to Coleman. But if he's the guy we all think he is, it won't matter. -
LOL...I mean, I can see it. It's the first tournament, you don't know Wrestling. Makes sense...I guess. What's funnier is she probably understood Wrestling by that point and still told the story knowing how stupid it seems for someone who's been around the sport. So she was a little self deprecating and that's funny.

LOL...this remind me of this whole act the Brands did. Terry was yelling at the ref doing the pointing and...whining. Tom Grabs him and tries to calm him down, they take a half step, Tom turns around starts pointing and yelling at the refs...Terry grabs him. Now Terry turns back and yells...goes on for like 4-5 times each person. It was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw. I actually missed the start and still saw about 4 times they turned and bitched at the refs. Peak-Brands.

35 countries demand ban of Russia at the 2024 Olympics
scourge165 replied to BaldAt23's topic in International Wrestling
Again, then China, North Korea, Iran...and a LOT of other Countries are out. The US(and the rest of NATO) was allowed in when they went into Iraq. I think we can all agree that was unjustified and a whole lot of citizens who had zero say in anything their leader was doing died. There are also the places that throw the gay(or just suspected gay) people off buildings...I don't know if I've mentioned that before. Feels like I should have. Where do you stop? How much oppression or death? And who decides? The people of Russia are already suffering Putin's tyrannical leadership. He's used that Country as his own piggy bank. What Russia is doing is horrible. By all reports, it's ALMOST entirely Putin and the War is widely unpopular. So I don't agree with punishing the athletes. Unless the girls Gymnasts or the Wrestling team can make a difference in stopping Putin, I would still argue they should be allowed to compete as they were in 2020(or '21). -
Yes...it resulted in the DFF for the 7th place match. I remember when the B1G was considred tough! (I'm kidding, don't screw around with head injuries). I'm a Gomez fan, but he leaves his feet, drives him into the mat. That's a slam. It's an easy call IMO. I get he was trying to stop him from countering when he hit the match, but he had him under control. I can't see how you argue with that. I think it would have benefited Gomez to keep Wrestling for 9th, but that's another story. Clear slam.

All I know is I was fine with these guys before...and now I just went back and watched the B1G Semis and Tim Johnson was annoying the hell out of me with his talk about Ridge Lovett in the room and how Nebraska guys are all about their team and then he dropped in a fact about the first time Neb has had two undefeated Wrestlers(and then about 2 minutes later and after others had spoken) he said...since 1961...as if he was scrolling through the guide. It reminds me of watching TV with my Grandma and I pointed out a laugh track to her...and it ruined the show for her. If fact I just posted a Nelson Brands video from 2021 and Shane Sparks mentions resilite a few times.

I mean...Lewis defaulted in the ACCs and was a returning champ(from '19). Gomez has lost his last 3 matches now. Got hurt for Thomas, lost in the 1st round to Rooks and then a DQ vs the Maryland kid. I'd put Gomez as a ~10 seed. Kinda hard to see him being a top 8, but I really have no idea. He looked like he was moving better in the Maryland match, but he's unlikely to have a full gas tank and he looked bad in that 1st match of the B1Gs. I think his ceiling went from potential at a historic upset...again, to hopefully being able to make a little run and finish at least somewhere on the podium.
-
LOL...who is underrating Haines? He was the #2 seed at the B1Gs and will likely be the #2 at the NCAAs. I think people are rating him pretty appropriately. There are some good ones already mentioned, but 197 has a few. I'm a big fan of Trumble. I also think Beard has a shot at a NC. Though with how much 197 seems to be up in the air, I'm not sure any of these guys are underrated. I could see both potentially winning in the Semis or losing on the backside in the Rd of 12 or 16.

Mekhi Lewis got the 4 seed as an at-large. Looked like he was in agony finishing off his quarterfinals match.
-
Yeah, he got blasted in the nuts pretty good. Or at least in that area. Looked unintentional though, and I haven't seen many of his fights, it's only sketchy to me if there's any intent behind it. To me it just looked like a newcomer under the bright lights...way faster than normal and maybe didn't measure his shots like he'd wanted to. I was hoping to see a little bit of his striking for my own benefit to see what he looks like, but again, for the last reason, guessing he was just looking for the Win. I'm sure we'll see more the next time around.

I missed this. AJ is the oldest of the 3 wrestling brothers, right? I MUST be wrong about that. Because; Now...I don't know if AJ Ferrari Raped a girl or not. My first thought is always, "why would you lie about that, who would lie about that," and then I'm reminded of a couple of times people have lied about that, so I try and withhold judgement...as much as I can. Especially when I know none of the parties or details as is the case here. Still, if the guy who has done all the shit he had BEFORE he's accused of rape is "a handful," but not as much as a handful as another brother, that's terrifying. Also, when I think of "handful," I think of my Nephew. He's a little asshole, but he's also 3, so he gets a pass for it, because...he's a handful(and hilarious and again, 3). THAT is a handful. Battery, sexual assault, doing everything you can to be guilty of vehicular manslaughter and just getting lucky, that ain't a "handful."

Eh...that one I'm actually with you on! Greatest post-season pitcher of his generation, but a little annoying listening to him in October.

I remember watching a pretty notable HS Wrestling Tournament and they'd ask the SAME question to everyone. The guy who did it was pretty young and has gotten much better, but it was literally 14 times of "what does it mean to bring the _____ title back to Parkland, Illinois," or "St. Edwards." Wrestler, "Oh, it means a lot, we have a lot of support from our families and our coaches and...yeah, it means a lot." You're right, you're not getting much there. They also do the, "when you were down 4-3 in the 3rd, what was your thought process." And generally...I assume it's, "I gotta score or I will lose." But again, it's the, 'just keep grinding away, I knew I had to keep attacking...he's tough to get in on and I just kept grinding and I'm just glad I was able to get in on a leg and finish that TD!'
-
LOL...lets just go with, "Both really-really good!'
-
Fair enough. I think I'm a bit less discerning when it comes to broadcast duo's. They generally seem to be disliked and I find myself having an unpopular opinion quite a bit(NFL, I don't mind Buck and Aikman for example). I think Gibbons is great. I think Shane Sparks has done a lot for the sport and he worked hard to get more access to the Wrestlers...a bit of a pioneer in that regard IMO. Seems like it used to be...what, Gibbons and then they'd have Gable in there who was more of a fan than an announcer. I also like Daniel Cormier when he does the NCAAs or Robles. When you're watching a good match, it kinda becomes background noise...as with Tim Johnson. I know he tells some stories and people may find him a bit grating. I'm indifferent.
-
Yes...of course, as I said, it was hyperbole, but it speaks to the nature of international Wrestling at that point with the questionable calls overturned. I remember hearing a story(years later and passed along through several people) after Slay won about team USA coaches made sure to follow the officials around as one of the Kolat appeals had been appealed without a USA representative there...and resulted in him getting screwed.
-
I assume he's talking about Randy Lewis.
-
I mean...I also qualified it with "maybe the best." This isn't my hill! LOL...just again pointing out how Storley when he was coming out was viewed as a special, unique type of recruit. In fact, I think he may have been the same year as the famous Chris Phillips and that Monroeville team in Ohio with 4-4X State Champs, Phillips, Logan and Hunter Stieber and Cam Tessari. Phillips was a 4X Champ...I think all at 171 in Ohio...which in and of itself should say plenty, but he also just dominated the Ironman a couple times, won National Tourney's and was a freak talent in his own right. None of this really has to do with the thread, but I find it all interesting. And Storley was a 6X Champ in SD with a record of like 230-2. Maybe I mythologized Storley a bit in my head, but I was just a huge fan of his coming out. He was a beast and he was a kid you wanted to root for. You check out this match vs a Fargo AA and how Storley handled it and it was tough to not be a fan. Again...almost totally unrelated to the thread. Just a way of remembering one helluva wrestler who didn't accomplish his ultimate goal.
