Yeah, that was really my intention. Most of the people the fit my original question are likely not known outside of fans of the program they wrestled for. Not many 1x low AAs backgrounds are well known by general wrestling fans. I was originally wondering how many walk-on type guys that maybe loved the sport but didn't start until high school/never had high level coaching before college made huge jumps and actually saw success at the D1 level.

That's a good answer. I forgot he didn't win a state title. Like you said, with his high school resume (below) it's actually just kind of shocking that someone so good can graduate without a single title. Prep • Ironman Champion(2022) • Powerade Champion(2023) • Third at Ironman (2023) • Two-time runner up at State • Two-time Conference Champ • Fifth Place at Fargo (2021)

I just stumbled across the old Jaggers finals match against Ryan Williams from the 2009 finals. Williams best finish was 7th in PIAAs during high school. Unlike our esteemed friend WKN, I pose a trivia question without having any answers.. But it raised the question.. who are some of the most successful D1 wrestlers you recall with a lack of high school success? Requirement for your answers is zero high school state championships. Don't you dare say Anthony Cassar on this thread.

I'd be lying if I said my eyes didn't get a little watery watching that. Hard to see him so feeble. As you said, I'm glad he was able to give an update.

I'm not sure if you have the information readily available, but I'd be curious to know.. 1. What percentage of OT matches go to rideouts 2. Which wrestlers have been to the most rideouts 3. Which wrestlers have the best records in rideouts You have some guys that seem perfectly content to stand around for 9 minutes and let rideouts decide the match. I'm curious who is the GOAT of wrestling the most insufferable matches.

Best comment I've seen in a while. Couldn't be more accurate.

Brooks story: True or False?
BruceyB replied to Interviewed_at_Weehawken's topic in International Wrestling
If I were on primetime ESPN and asked what it took to win a national title, and chose that moment to say "It was all me, there is no God, no Allah, no nothin'. The only way you can reach your goals is to believe in yourself." Then yes, I would scoff at myself. -
But now we need someone to take the heat off of Starocci. Oh.. wait.. Who's going to be the one to take the heat off of Brooks?

I think that the portal is just a formal way to say that you are open to transferring. It doesn't seem like there are any actual regulations on changing schools. Unenroll, get dismissed, quit, who knows.. You can join any team for second semester.

Teyon Ware hired as coach of Northern Colorado
BruceyB replied to flyingcement's topic in College Wrestling
I am very excited to see what Ware can do at NCU. I do think Nickerson did a great job there, but it seems to be a good hire with a lot of upside. Best of wishes to NCU and Ware. -
These are the kinds of posts I want from the notable guys that cover our sport.

Brooks story: True or False?
BruceyB replied to Interviewed_at_Weehawken's topic in International Wrestling
You know it's bad when C.P. is skeptical on a public format. I'm not faulting Flo for being hesitant to make comments, but when nothing concrete has come out and Pyles is essentially saying this doesn't look good.. you know it really doesn't look good. -

Brooks story: True or False?
BruceyB replied to Interviewed_at_Weehawken's topic in International Wrestling
I admittedly know very little about how all of this works, but I'd imagine there is something more significant coinciding with that test than just plain ol' over-the-counter DHEA. 4 years is crazy. -
Brooks story: True or False?
BruceyB replied to Interviewed_at_Weehawken's topic in International Wrestling
I forget the exact interview, but last year after OTT, he really came off arrogant and disrespectful, especially in regards to DT. His lack of humility and the disrespect for David Taylor rubbed many, including myself, the wrong way. When you supplant an aging legend of the sport, have some class and respect for what they accomplished, at least in the public eye. And I would say that is still a lesser offense than the one mentioned by @BigRedFan. -
Brooks story: True or False?
BruceyB replied to Interviewed_at_Weehawken's topic in International Wrestling
Yeah, let's listen to what is coming out of Aaron Brooks' camp for what happened.. Last year he popped positive and the issue was later fixed. If he didn't learn how diligent he needs to be about what he puts into his body after that, then I don't feel bad for him. Second, how dumb do you have to be to take something that replenishes your hormones without asking if it's legal first? If he had low-t would he just go take some testosterone boosters because the doc said he was low? DHEA was likely the mask for whatever he was actually doing. If it wasn't then he is just an absolute moron for taking hormone boosters without checking if they were legal. He's a cheat, he's dumb, or he's a dumb cheat. If he's dumb enough to take two different "meds" in a calendar year that caused failed USADA tests, then he deserves whatever criticism he gets. I don't know of any legitimate cases of people "accidentally" failing USADA tests. That's just the default excuse. With all of the knowledge given to athletes and with what is at stake with a false test, it would be pretty tough to be that naive. -
Holy Crap. How Did I Not Know About This?

As opposed to wrestling where the biggest insult would be to call him a fish. -

I was actually curious if he was a diver as well. It sounds like he was not a competition diver, but a diver that day. -

How does a swimmer break their ribs? Or did he have broken ribs going at the trials? -

Ah, how did I not think of him sooner?! The famous Les Anderson of Iowa State managed the feat in 1958, 1959, and 1960. Who could forget the #2 seed Anderson pulling the 7-5 upset over Michigan's #1 seeded Max Pearson? Les' dreams of being a three-timer were famously thwarted when he fell to Oklahoma's Stan Abel in 1959. We all know the story of how Les Anderson moved up from 130 to 137 for his final season where he once again stood atop the podium to finish his college career.
