  1. I like this idea and the idea of 2 min first period with short breaks (maybe :30) between periods. It might increase action. Maybe for OT only, adopt a push out rule. Too much tactical hard collar ties, clubbing, and control ties to slow matches.
  2. Once this news makes its way onto the Lehigh Wrestling facebook page, might need some wellness checks at the many senior housing facilities populated by the LU fan base. 0-3 against Ivy teams and could be at risk for 0-4 with an upcoming match v. Princeton. Yikes! But they have a good tournament squad and should have Beard and a few others ready for success at EIWA's and NCAA's. Hold on old timers, all is not lost!
  3. You have to give Brands some credit for this as he is probably one of the few that could get away with slowing down the match so effectively - ususally Starocci can get a wrestler out of position with his own motion, level changes, body fakes, etc. Brands boredom was effective to a point and he may be one of the few that could effectively deploy this strategy.
  4. hurtful - but funny
  5. no - MURIN WRESTLED DEFENSIVELY ALMOST WHOLE MATCH (HE IS GOOD AT THIS) 80/20 No - you are on Hawkeye fantasy island
  6. True - but I mostly blamed Iowa (at least 75-25) for the boredom.
  7. pretty sure he did not have Lee match in mind with this interesting suggestion!
  8. Always glad to see non-Cornell Ivy teams have some success. Watched Brown and hope/expect Coach Leen can get in the mix with rising Harvard and Columbia programs. Hoping each of these schools can get wrestlers qualfied for NCAA's and win some matches at that level. Pretty sure Princeton will, despite its dual meet struggles. Princeton looks like they have strong recruiting and will bounce back from some suprising dual meet losses.
  9. Good analysis! I was thinking Bartlett had a strategy, but it was a very poor strategy. He wrestled in in Woods's tie ups and let him dictate the pace. Was not active or ready off the whistle and mostly reactive during the match. The late great Dave Schultz gave a clinic and said in big matches he liked to focus on making sure he was wrestling in his tie ups and dictating the pace that he wanted. Bartlett completely missed on that approach - but he has the video of the match and he can learn! I think there will be a lot of adjustments we will see at B1G and NCAA's if/when more PSU v. Iowa matches occur. If Bartlett gets Woods again, he needs a new strategery!
  10. How many stalling calls were there to prod more action? This was mostly tolerated - should it be?
  11. I am not sure that this approach is good for the sport. The endless clubbing and hanging on collar ties in wars of attrition -- often a (stance) snoozefest with not much actual wrestling (motion, level change, penetration step, back arch). The announcers suggested "presenting yourself" was adequate - but I wonder if more should not be required - actual efforts to score from neutral rather than merely avoidance of scorring. After all, we have no step out points in folkstyle. By no means does this observation apply to the matches at 125 or 184. A few others it was a lesser problem - but overall it made the dual somewhat disappointing as the dual meet of the year between #1 and #2. Looks like the Pitt v VaTech was far more interesting from a wrestling action persepctive.
  12. I think it is sound strategy for Iowa wrestlenation to be happy with a distant second result when PSU is involved. Could see this again at B1G and NCAA and for the next 20 years. Iowa shpuld be happy to be like the Washington Generals, a good foil for the entertaining team!
  13. Truth is not a defense -- and may make it more hurtful.
  14. This is fair - some extraordinary talents on NCAA mats in 2023. Fun!
  15. back in his day, I note that mean Gene Mills was so lethal on top with half from the knees that he was pinning best guys in the world in freestyle Lee might be there - will be interesting to see
  16. I am no Iowa fan - but I take his point.
  17. Clemson is Orange and used to have wrestling! Maybe AJ trying football?
  18. Hofstra Strong?
  19. these are good pts - he might be able to redshirt next year or so as well
  20. If he ends up at Princeton they could have a show!
  21. Some say it is a virtue to learn from your mistakes.
  22. Did not know ADS's middle name was "James." AJDS! You have to give him credit for the heart and perserverance, down 10-2 and he finds a way. Has a lot of fight in him!
  23. I think Zeke had moved on from Penn wrestling before the PRTC even began and long before Brandon Slay came to the PRTC. They probably know eachother from USA wrestling though. When I look at ASU, I think of it as successful. They have a lot of real butt-kickers and are in the frigging Desert. Arizona - not exactly a hot bed of wrestling. Almost every program has room for improvement - even PSU has its critics.
  24. Is it clear that Warner is out? The thing about this dual is that PSU a chance to win 9 out of 10 and strong favorites in at least 3. While Iowa (without Warner) is heavy favorite in only one and has a strong chance to win 5 or 6. Iowa will have some sadness if only Lee gets the win - is Hawkeye wrestlenation worried? Should they be?
