Penn State might be able to overcome some questions about 125 with overall team balance!
-
It is a credit to USA wrestling and our system that there are so many U.S. guys who are so competitive. Yianni's "hype" has been appropriate - he can beat anyone at any time even if he does not always do so.
-
Hoping that getting bumped down to the 197 lb "B" pool does not shake the confidence of Aaron Brooks as he explores competing up a weight from where he has had NCAA success.
-
looks like a fun format with a lot of interesting matches - should be interesting! Will be nice to see where CJ Composto is after a year out of NCAA action. Pretty good top bracket at 141!
-
I won a jv tourney in grade school and kind of down hill after that. But I was not smart enough to see that I should have moved on. At least there is a silver lining for those of us who stayed too long: it is an interesting sport where you meet and get to know interesting people - and witness many wrestlers doing heroic things.

Penn lineup starting to get clearer after some public wrestleoffs this weekend - may be other wrestleoffs that are not public. I think the Keystone and early season matches might also help sort out the lineup. 125 - Ryan Miller is back and very solid, his closest challenge was a 2 pt win over frosh Max Gallagher. Impressed that Max is that close to Ryan. 3rd at this weight is Brady Pruet. 133- Michael Colaiocco OT over Alex Almeyda. Both are very tough. Challenging Ivy and EIWA weight with the freestyle world champ and defending NCAA champ perhaps defending this year? 141- NCAA AA CJ Composto wins the bracket, 2nd is Nico Nardone 149 - Andy Trocynski wins the 4 man bracket, closest match with Kelly Dunnigan - Jackson Polo and Jackson Dean provide depth at this weight. Cross Wasilewski taking a gap year and won the Princeton Open at 149. I hear Swisher is now at 157 - maybe we will see him at the Keystone? Not sure of whether he plans to cut to 149 as some on this board have predicted. 157 - no public wrestle off - One of Penn's Captains, Lucas Revano, reportedly coming down from 165 and not sure who else might challenge for this spot 165 - Kaya Sement wins the round robin over Cole Spencer and Cam Connor. Its a cool name but I have not seen him in many matches. Looking forward to it! 174- Nick Incontrerra is the man 184 - Max Hale is the man 197 - Cole Urbas held off Martin Cosgrove - not sure if Cosgrove might go up? I think e competed in high school at 215 for some matches. 285 - John Stout has grown into the weight and won the round robin over frosh Zach Delsanter and Matt Cruise.

I really appreciate the knowledge and insight of so many poster on this string and many others. I have not been able to keep up and do not want to suggest I have much to offer. The one thing I know a little about is that Penn graduated several starters and should have many new wrestlers and perhaps some at new weights. I have not seen these guys and have no opinions about who will emerge - but there is some depth and several with strong credentials coming in. They have wrestle-offs this weekend and so that should begin to tell the story of who will emerge and where. It often is an evolving analysis though where early season results at the Keystone and other competitions may become important. Penn has an off year at NCAA's last year, but otherwise a good season. I think they should have a better year this year and hoping that carries through the NCAA tourney. It is a very tough tourney, so my expectations are modest.

I am not much of a fan of AJ, but he is quite a wrestler. I am not amused, but he is quite the showman and if his plan has been MMA it is harder to fault him form some of the over the top knucklehead showmanship. Also, I think it is good to let guys redeem themselves. People make mistakes. Maybe he can be a good teammate and citizen of the Iowa community?

Sad and periolous state of affairs in the House.
-
I have heard good things, but not seem him. Wrestle-offs scheduled for early Nov. Roster shows quite a few state champs in the room who could be in the hunt for this spot. 2xNJ Champ Troczynski, NY Champ Jackson Polo (NY 5,3,3,1); OH Champ Richard Delsanter; NJ Finalist Dunnigan; OH Champ and 2x finalist Seefeldt - and a couple of other guys w high school credentials. Never know if the roster weights are accurate.
-
Penn's posted roster has Lucas Revano (one of the team captains this year) at 157, apparently coming down from 165. Could be interesting. Penn 285 is interesting and hard to predict (at least to me). They have some full size big men, including Soph. Cruise, Frosh Vinciguerra and Frosh Delsanter, Sr. Stout (who already migrated up from 184 and looked pretty good last year) and some other guys who may go up from 197 if they do not win the spot (e.g. Sr. Cole Urbas, Frosh Cosgrove, and Frosh Connolly). 149 and 165 for Penn also hard to predict as it seems from the roster that there are many guys who could win these spots.

Shapiro - is he really a threat to win it as Freshman?

Why? Probably from childhood vaccines before he had a chance to do his own research. -

Like Dake, he is overrated and has little chance to win it as a frosh. -
Any insiders from the Big Red know what the Vito plan is for next year? Even if NCAA allows an Olympic year, does Cornell's own rules allow him to defer a year?
-
A few thoughts on Vito. Quite a year! I would guess it is at least some small consolation for the NCAA guys he beat last year that they lost to the best wrestler in the world at that weight. While it would be understandable if he sticks with freestyle and ditches his (I think) final year of NCAA eligibility, I would guess he might like the challenge of another NCAA title. When you are a defending NCAA champ, the top contenders are always gunning for you. I would guess that a chance to knock off the defending champ and the reigning world champ is just a little more motivation? Not going to be easy. But as we saw with Spencer this year, somebody can have your number. Would expect most will wager on Vito over the field. Is Vito the most likely to win next year or is it Starocci or Brooks moving up?

People can change and grow. Are any of us still our old selves?

I might try to bribe Casey Cunningham to bring some PSU magic to Palo Alto? Awkward because his son is coming to PSU.
-
Surprising that he would leave Stanford for UNC as it seems like things at Stanford were moving in the right direction. I wonder if it was compensation driven or lifestyle driven? Did UNC commit to a longer guaranteed tenure? It was a long time ago that he was at UNC so would not think he has a lot of close family and friends there.

Intermat Preseason Rankings are out!
Elevator replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I would take the over on Iowa at 8. Next men up will be scrappy. -
Crowded room with impressive depth, perhaps except 285. '23-'24 roster is not yet posted and my brain/memory is not good, but I do not recall much depth at 285 Last year's roster does not show much behind Kerkvliet that will still be there. I think recruit Mirasola the larger may project 285 but not there this year. Did have success with 197 bump up but not ideal.
