  1. He was a talented and accomplished schoolboy wrestler from PA and is a valauble asset in the PSU room probably best suited to develop being Howard for another year or two. Getting thrown to the B1G wolves now cannot be easy. I do not want to rush to any conclusions as to how he might develop. Some accomplished high school wrestlers get to a high level sooner and some later and of course some do not find whatever it takes to make it at the next level. Maybe he finds a way. It cannot be easy on him to be the one guy on the roster that the whole arena considers a success if he does not give up 6. I do not think it is a lack of character or commitment. Kid probably wants it as much as anyone. I feel a little bad for him watching him struggle. I think it is a noble struggle to keep trying in the face of tough odds in a sport where you are all alone and everyone is watching. So I wish him well and tip my hat that he is out there battling!
  2. Iowa has a chance if they get a few big breaks and make no big mistakes - but I think this is on PSU home mats. I think PSU finds a way.
  3. This is not crazy, but PSU wins one of the matches at 149 or 165 and maybe both. PSU gets bonus from at least one of 133, 174, and 184 and maybe in two of these matches. 197 and 285 could split, but lean slightly PSU. Pretty amazing that undersized Dean so often beats top full-sized 197lbers by bringing more whupass. Warner could find a way with a stallfest. The guys is a warrior but such a frigging bore to watch.
  4. I think he did.
  5. Jimmy is being provactive, like a good pastry should! You should show Jimmy C some love for keeping us on our toes!
  6. Heard Columbia beat Princeton - nice to see some parity in the EIWA although everybody is chasing Cornell. Not easy to catch the Big Red wrestle machine.
  7. SVN, Bartlett, Facundo, and Haines - we've been watchng to see if they could be AA level and contenders and now it seem clearer that they could be at that level. The coaches probably have a good idea from the room, but the B1G dual schedule will further clarify. 7 or 8 AA's and multiple finalists and champs is a good strategy for NCAA team glory! Can't wait to see Jimmy C's Iowa prediction where the Hawkeyes take 6 of ten matches!
  8. What a fun dual with many contested matches! Is it clear that Haines will get the start? Bearclaw? Kerk has been mercurial and this will be interesting to see if he is at a new level. Nothing will surprise me in that match - hope they let it fly!
  9. Some good ones nominated above. A few more: Pentz 14th at 197 O'Malley 10th at 174 Zapf 11th at 149 At 149, I am not betting against Yianni, but I wonder if this might be the deepest weight overall. Yianni is something, the top 5 are very solid, experienced, and dangerous, and the next ten afer that has many guys that are close (top 15 has many spoilers). I saw the match between Parco and Johnson and they were both excellent. Millner at 9th says a lot - he is very tough.
  10. Not an easy thing to measure - but my sense as a fan is that Lee has been more dominant overall and his cumulative total on the NCAA whip ass scale is a bit higher. But Dake is an all timer as is Lee.
  11. I don't think it helps to post about who is the most arrogant. But there are some college wrestlers that are very confident! Yianni, Lee, Brooks, Starocci, and RBY are wrestlers (among others) that are confident. Winning NCAA titles is a good reason for the confidence. There is an art to how a confident wrestler communicates his confidence and remains very likeable and NIL marketable and it may related to avoiding the appearance of being arrogant - and some are better than others at this art. Probably should be a training program for this as NIL reaches college wrestling. Although there have been many other wrestlers who are excellent in conveying confidence without appearing arrogant, I thought the interview of Shane Griffith when he won the NCAA title and his program was on the chopping block was extraordinary. Might be good to use this video as a training tool to athletes on how to handle an interview.
  12. Nice tribute and well deserved. A good guy and his accomplishments have been extraordinary!
  13. I'd say Brooks is a little better at turning guys for points. Otherwise hard to say.
  14. Also, the claw, spiral, figure fouring the leg, tightwaist, cross wrist, Blair ride, double boots, arm bar, bottom leg turk, and half from the knees can cause discomfort and are keeping guys down - - should be banned!
  15. Is the plan to have Brooks bump up or recall Beard who is on loan from Lehigh? Can Carter bump up to cover 184, guessing he could.
  16. great matches - I think Cornell wins. But if V Tech can get one good upset and hold the line, they could do it.
  17. No disrespect to Alirez who looks good, but is Fix's best shot for NCAA title at 141?
  18. Seems like holiday tourneys are not quite as tough as pre-pandemic trditions - less participation from top competition and less depth overall. Might be smart for some of the top guys to stay healthy and manage the risk of injury from a grueling sport by sitting our the holiday tourneys. The upside is more room to see some of the newer competitors. I am not complaining and note there has been a lot of exciting holiday wrestling!

  20. 125 - Dean Peterson may have secured the spot over Rutgers teammate Dylan Shawver; same for unseeded Diego Sotelo of Harvard who was unseeded and took 3rd after a first round loss to Jack Medley. Sotelo beat teammate Beau Bayless in the consis 10-0 and won 5 matches before a MFF in the match for 3rd over Peterson. 133 - 4th Seed Michael Colaiocco of Penn won the title with an 8-1 win over Taylor Lamont in the quarters, a 15-13 win over #1 seed Lucas Byrd in the semis and a 3-2 win in the final over Chris Cannon that included a riding time point. Ryan Crookham had a big 2-1 decision in the quarters over #2 seed Joe Hellman of Rutgers. 141 - unseeded Saul Ervin of SIU Edwardsville took 5th and got to the semis with wins over Joe Zargo (WBF 1:54) and 4th seed Jesse Vasquez of ASU. 149 - unseeded Caleb Tyus of SIU Edwardsville also made it to the semis with wins over Graham Rooks (4th seed) and 5th seed Sam Hillegas. He took 4th to Doug Zapf (2-6) but beat Tyler Badget of Pitt in the consis semis 7-5. Badgett also had a good tourney. 157 - unseeded Drew Scharenbro of WIsconsin won 2nd. 165 - not a lot of surprise. Lucas Revano of Penn won four matches in the consis and got 7th from the 14th seed 174 - Unseeded Daniel Wask (Unattached Navy Prep) beat #2 seed Troy Fisher in the quarters and fell 2-3 to Nick Contrera in the semis, then won 4th after a win the consi semis over Pitt's Luca Augustine. Wask is going to do some big things in NCAA wrestling after his PG year. 184 - Jaritt Shonhoster (UW Whitewater) was the 5th seed and won 2nd, with a fall over the top seed Brian Soldano in the semis. 197 - Andrew Davison Northwestern lost to Cole Urbas 2-3 in his second match on the front side and then won 3rd place with 6 wins in the consis - beast! 285 - Pitt's unseeded Dayton Pitzer took 2nd and won several big matches, including 4-0 over #1 seed Colton Schultz (ASU) in the quarters and a pin (5:57) over 4th seed Trent Hilger in the semis. Plenty of other big wins, but these are some I noticed!
  21. Saw that he competed in recent matches. Any word from the PSU bench whether Levi has won the position for the year?
  22. The no call of a fall is not uncommon. It seemed to me from the first row in the 2nd round of the EIWA championships at Navy in 2000, 8th Seed Justin Haskins of Rutgers might have gotten the fall against #1 seed and eventual champ Rick Springman from Penn. It was close, to say the least. It was not called. Springman promptly reversed and pinned Hakins at 2:36, then beat Mark Dufresne (who was tough and had a great duckunder) 3-1 in the semis, and then pinned Harvard's Ed Mosley in the final at 5:40. https://www.eiwawrestling.org/results/EIWA_results_2000.pdf
  23. I had not heard that this was a done deal, but obviously a merger with one of the Big V schools makes perfect sense: UC LA/Philly.
  24. O'Malley is very dangerous and his matches often are among the most entertaining. A joy to watch him try to toss everyone to their back!
  25. I would guess 157 is next and 165 will be volatile in the top 5. Impressive depth in NCAA wrestling makes it fun!
