I am not sure that this approach is good for the sport. The endless clubbing and hanging on collar ties in wars of attrition -- often a (stance) snoozefest with not much actual wrestling (motion, level change, penetration step, back arch). The announcers suggested "presenting yourself" was adequate - but I wonder if more should not be required - actual efforts to score from neutral rather than merely avoidance of scorring. After all, we have no step out points in folkstyle. By no means does this observation apply to the matches at 125 or 184. A few others it was a lesser problem - but overall it made the dual somewhat disappointing as the dual meet of the year between #1 and #2. Looks like the Pitt v VaTech was far more interesting from a wrestling action persepctive.

I think it is sound strategy for Iowa wrestlenation to be happy with a distant second result when PSU is involved. Could see this again at B1G and NCAA and for the next 20 years. Iowa shpuld be happy to be like the Washington Generals, a good foil for the entertaining team!

Spencer - get standing O at Penn State?

Truth is not a defense -- and may make it more hurtful. -
Yianni Diakomihalis - Oh, Yeah. Him, too.

This is fair - some extraordinary talents on NCAA mats in 2023. Fun! -

Tom Brands hasn’t seen anyone better than Lee

back in his day, I note that mean Gene Mills was so lethal on top with half from the knees that he was pinning best guys in the world in freestyle Lee might be there - will be interesting to see -

I am no Iowa fan - but I take his point. -
Clemson is Orange and used to have wrestling! Maybe AJ trying football?

PSU should keep Levi Haines' redshirt on
Elevator replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
these are good pts - he might be able to redshirt next year or so as well -
If he ends up at Princeton they could have a show!

Some say it is a virtue to learn from your mistakes.

Did not know ADS's middle name was "James." AJDS! You have to give him credit for the heart and perserverance, down 10-2 and he finds a way. Has a lot of fight in him!

I think Zeke had moved on from Penn wrestling before the PRTC even began and long before Brandon Slay came to the PRTC. They probably know eachother from USA wrestling though. When I look at ASU, I think of it as successful. They have a lot of real butt-kickers and are in the frigging Desert. Arizona - not exactly a hot bed of wrestling. Almost every program has room for improvement - even PSU has its critics.

Is it clear that Warner is out? The thing about this dual is that PSU a chance to win 9 out of 10 and strong favorites in at least 3. While Iowa (without Warner) is heavy favorite in only one and has a strong chance to win 5 or 6. Iowa will have some sadness if only Lee gets the win - is Hawkeye wrestlenation worried? Should they be?

I would venture a guess that he might find luck sooner if there were still a 118 class. Hoping he can grow into the weight - some signs of that!

Would be interesting to hear from the experienced wrestlers or coaches how you might guide a wrestler how to navigate a match with Lee. I cannot think of much. Maybe: do not choose down, better 1 than 2 if you are on top, and use your best control ties on your feet to slow him down and (in theory) work your own offense. Doubt any strategy works much better than: "try to have fun out there and stay relaxed!"

PSU should keep Levi Haines' redshirt on
Elevator replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I think it is up to the coaches and Levi and I will respect there decision. Guessing he is competing this year, but certainly a reason to let him have a redshirt year particulalry if he wants it. -
you Cornell guys are smart - I don't care what Lehigh fans keep saying about you!

Quakers up 19-9 with two matches left. Some good action!
-
Probably right - but sometimes the passion for a big match may lead to suprising decisions. Glory may want the sht at Vito and I bet Vito would welcome the challenge. Probably just my wish taht will not happen!

If he wins EIWA tourney at 125 and is undefeated, I like his chances of at least a #3 seed which is moral equivalent of a #2 seed (which he probably gets). EIWA is not the B1G but pretty tough. As I have posted before, it is a slice of unfortunate foolishness to adopt seeding criteria that disregards the highly relevant results of a wrestler competing at an adjacent weight class. It is the kind of knucklehead thinking that has tended to plague NCAA seeding. For example, if Glory bumped up and beat Vito, that win should be disregarded entirely in seeding? Of course not. The people who made this rule should smack themselves thrice and quit tournament administration for good.

120, after placing in the (I think smaller school division) of the PIAA tourney at 106, and 113. https://www.statecollege.com/two-time-state-champion-gary-steen-flips-from-pitt-to-penn-state-wrestling/ "Steen — who projects as a 125-pounder in college — won the PIAA championship at 106 pounds as a freshman in 2018 and place third in 2019. Last year he moved up to 113 pounds and claimed his second Class 2A title with an overtime victory against South Park’s Joey Fischer. Wrestling at 120 pounds for his senior season, Steen is 12-0 on the year so far, including four pins and one tech fall. Steen, currently ranked No. 7 in the nation at 120 pounds by The Open Mat, joins Shayne Van Ness and Alex Facundo in Penn State’s 2021 recruiting class."

He was a talented and accomplished schoolboy wrestler from PA and is a valauble asset in the PSU room probably best suited to develop being Howard for another year or two. Getting thrown to the B1G wolves now cannot be easy. I do not want to rush to any conclusions as to how he might develop. Some accomplished high school wrestlers get to a high level sooner and some later and of course some do not find whatever it takes to make it at the next level. Maybe he finds a way. It cannot be easy on him to be the one guy on the roster that the whole arena considers a success if he does not give up 6. I do not think it is a lack of character or commitment. Kid probably wants it as much as anyone. I feel a little bad for him watching him struggle. I think it is a noble struggle to keep trying in the face of tough odds in a sport where you are all alone and everyone is watching. So I wish him well and tip my hat that he is out there battling!
