  1. I’m not a doctor or a scientist. I am, however, aware that the NCAA doesn’t do anything fast. Highly doubt this was just tossed in without some degree of research.
  2. Per Bud Hennebaul, who works on the site logistics and such at the NCAAs, the mats were mopped and cleaned before each day and between sessions as they have been for years. Combined with the UV treatments and no reported issues from the 2021 and 2022 championships, this seems like it is something a bit bigger and it seems like there’s a lot of assumptions being passed along as facts on social (shocker, I know).
  3. This is also the third year the Sterilasers have been used at NCAAs. Did we have any of these issues in 21 or 22?
  4. The old building VMI used to wrestle in, Cocke Hall aka the Thunderdome, was one of the most unique experiences I've ever seen. Ancient old building with overhangs and it got loud in there. Compact and awesome. They have a new facility now, but the old one had some mystique to it.
  5. After years of my HS finishing second at the state tournament (and in some cases, it wasn't close to some of those monster Grundy teams Kevin Dresser had), a friend of mine said, "It's easy to win with class. It takes a while to learn how to lose with class." Not sure how real it is or who came up with it, but that always kinda stuck with me. I want to know how our best act at their worst moments sometimes.
  6. If I recall correctly, "Heart" used to be one of the criteria, which has seemed to have morphed/blended itself into the sportsmanship part of it. I misspoke there.
  7. 100% fair point, but how can you quantify sportsmanship and heart? Gable, for example, never lost a team point, never was disqualified, he might have been a bit flashy and loud at times, but nothing that any rational human being could describe as a knock on his sportsmanship - and if people disagree with his sprinting off the mat, that's on them. Not to mention, we don't know the "heart" he had to push through when he was fighting to clear his name (not getting into that any further). I feel like Sportsmanship/Heart is an added criteria created to eliminate people we don't like. That's not exactly an objective criteria. I'm for removing things that can be viewed as biased outside of what happens on the mat.
  8. I'm glad they took the completely subjective "Sportsmanship" (or was it heart?) out of it. If you're the best wrestler that year, and you're a jackass, that shouldn't disqualify you from winning something that's based on results that season. News flash, not every Hodge winner from the past is of high moral/ethical fiber or high character people. That's just the nature of people. If Starocci has the stats to validate the #1 next year for this, I'll have no qualms putting him on the #1 line.
  9. I hope not. It used to be 4, max 5.
  10. How long did you think about your schtick before registering for this forum?
  11. If this isn’t the script to the reboot of Brewster’s Millions, I’m not interested.
  12. The tie with Lee-Steveson was the first year it was worth 5. Lee won the fan vote.
  13. Not to sound crass, but that’s kinda what you’re supposed to do.
  14. I didn't include raw numbers to simply it. That's their rank in those categories. The O'Toole/O'Connor thing you're correct on. Doesn't change their placement or average. I also noted what the numbers mean below the chart. Maybe I'll whip another one up, removing wins, correcting the falls rank and using raw data. It's just a lot to decipher when you have numbers that mean one thing in one column and don't mean the same in another.
  15. Haven't been able to find any stats related to their off-the-mat bowling history. If you find it, I'll include that, too.
  16. When you have to determine something between candidates who are close, you pick nits. In an era of ducking matches, I used this metric as a measure for this graphic to show he put it on the line more than anyone else. He wrestled every available match. If everyone had within a reasonable spread, I wouldn’t have used it. In some cases, Parris had almost double as some candidates. That doesn’t imply everyone ducked, but just another data point. As everyone knows, there are lies, damn lies and statistics.
  17. Here's how I came to my conclusion. I didn't include the raw numbers because, well, it's not as pretty.
  18. He was a senior, so he had exhausted his eligibility at the end of that season. That school in Norfolk can eat sh*t.
  19. NAIA already has their own. After an invitational for the last few years, this year was their first official women's wrestling national championship event.
  20. It's happened eight times in history of the tournament.
  21. It's from National Preps, so it's New York Military Academy
  22. ... and let's add one more log to the fire. Once I saw Harlow's name, I researched the National Preps (I've got the placers in a separate database) and sure enough, this is the 168-pound bracket at the National Prep Championships in 1962. 1. Bill Harlow (St. Andrew's, Tenn.) 2. Roger Oleson (Hill School, Pa.) 3. Marshall Taylor (Norfolk Academy, Va.) 4. John Logan (Friends, Pa.)
  23. That's also future NCAA champion and NWHOF Distinguished Member Bill Harlow in the bracket.
  24. Definitely a Preps tournament based on all the schools represented there. I’m assuming this may have been an event “hosted” by Horace Mann School or a bracket given to the NYAC from the event.
