As a fan, does anybody else prepare for this tournament by convincing themselves that their team will flop? Probably pretty common, but it makes these three days a brutal sort of anticipation.

Last year Illinois had 4 in the blood round and had nothing to show for it. The price for a 133 title was very heavy. Having to mentally prep for that potential worst-case outcome was not fun, especially when it came to fruition.

If somehow IL left last year with 5 AAs including a champ and Poeta didn't Poeta will always be a what-if...

Catastrophizing leads to drinking more beer, more beer is good therefore more catastrophizing is better.  🍺

I absolutely am as a UNI fan. 9th place finish last year, which was pretty disappointing, and now just hoping for top 30 this year. If Downey gets upset, UNI might not have anyone advance to Friday with how the guys ended the season.

Rathjen has been looking good this last few weeks of season. Maybe he can pull something off in that bottom side bracket at 149

Seems to me that Oklahoma wrestling fans used to apply the expression "Black Friday" to NCAAs.  That was the day in bad years when their championship hopes disappeared.

To have a ready-made expression handy for when things went south ....

Yes, this is how I approach all sporting events I am emotionally invested in so that I am never disappointed.

An MMA podcast I listen to calls it "sadness hedging". I also do it. I dont know if its natural or I'm just trained from being a Philadephia Eagles fan during the Andy Reid years but I always expect my favorites to lose where they shouldnt and let me down.

Useless sidenote: I stopped caring about football years before the Eagles won the superbowl.

I'm the exact opposite...I'm an Arizona State fan and I've legit convinced myself that we're gonna have 3 finalists and 5 AAs. Anything less now and I'll be devastated

As a Beavs fan, I don't love the draw for our two best shots at the podium.  I wouldn't say I'm catasrophizing but if Renteria and JRad had won Pac12s . . . I've "ifs and butts" a lot of thought about how much better their paths would be

Minnesota has had this happen twice, 2008 when trying to repeat as champions only to have CP Schlatter and a Roger Kish bandaged together, Dustin Schlatter get 7th and then 2015 when the Gophers got 2nd the year before we had most of team implode such as Dylan Ness get hurt, Nick Dardanes not AAing and Minnesota getting 8th when we best Penn St in a dual

To go a different way of of this theme but sticking with your squad, what about 2010 Minnesota Gopher national champ Jayson Ness when all-time catastrophe hit his opponent Dan Dennis?

No need too.  As a loyal and true Poke we practice for the tournament with football. Catastrophizing.
