I would say that Social Media has been a major influencing factor into the "Gotcha!" culture. But there were many people that predated the social media types that would also get twisted into a whirlwind because of a typo.

Now that we know he is going back, after having graduated, I wonder if that means he got into Stanford grad school purely on academic merit (all while balancing american honors in the hardest sport that colleges offer, and maybe even having a social life

First thought was they were all testing the market to determine, then letting the school know what the number was they had to match. It is also quite possible they were all waiting to hear if they got accepted into grad school, with the portal move being preemptive in case they did not. I'm also wondering if there will be a late rush of preemptive entries on April 30. Let's say you are a starter at a good program. That program has recruited someone better at your weight class, but that guy hasn't committed yet. Should you enter the portal in case the better portal guy hasn't made a choice yet? If the TP guy commits on May 1, you can't enter the portal and risk sitting on the bench for a year, using a year of eligibility. 1 Dispassionate Penn State grad and fan.
