I get there are a lot of exciting super studs at 133 but why is Lucas Byrd, the undefeated returning NCAA champion who has "old man" strength seemingly being ignored when it comes to discussion of who wins 133?

I for one would not be shocked if he repeats.  Yes, I get that Davino, Blaze, Larkin, and Jax are all super slick, but I can see Byrd big brothering them with his raw power.

Because he's old and boring. People like new and flashy. But make no mistake, he can beat any and all of those guys on any given day. He's as, or more, technically sound as anyone at the weight. It's fun to have a weight with so much parity because everyone is world class rather than because it's a weak weight.

Definitely agree on the new shiny object distractions (Blaze, Davino, Forrest, now Seidel) but I think it’s more than that. I don’t think he’s being overlooked or disrespected, I think most have him in the mix. It’s just that there are SOOOO MANY studs at 133. It honestly may not even come down to who’s the best in March, it may come down to some luck, whoever survives, who’s healthiest, a controversial call, etc. There’s just too many good guys. You’re gonna get a match or 2 (or more) on Thurs night in Rd2 that would historically be a quarter or semi at NCAAs.

Good point.  Seeding is going to be super important at NCAAs, and thus Big 10s will be critical as so many top guys are there (Byrd, Davino, Blaze, Ayala, Van Dee, Fugitt).

I have also seen a few cases with Byrd recently where he is unable to get bonus points against significantly inferior competition. To me, that suggests he is more beatable once he gets to the gauntlet of studs at 133.

It’s probably not lack of respect but more fatigue then anything .It could be because he’s a 7th year guy and about to wrestle in his 5th ncaa tournament even though the Covid stuff happened half a decade ago. He’s also 26 going against a field of freshman.

rooting for short king Byrd to repeat but think there are too many landmines and it's incredibly hard to repeat to begin with so give me the field over Byrd if there's money involved.

The Jimmy might cover that.

I look forward to seeing who the 133 cut hurts the most at the tourney.

Byrd/Blaze/Forrest seem like they could have issues.

Blaze and Forrest are big 133 pounders?  They both look like they could make 125.

This is probably a big reason why:

If he won't do the Surfing Bird dance he deserves no respect. If he is getting NIL money and it's not contingent on the Bird dance we as fans have been let down again. He should be contractually obligated to walk out to Surfing Bird.

Would you like me to check with Jeremy?

Blaze beat Bassett/Hardy over the summer at 65KG/143LBS.

Forrest's frame to me looks like he could jump a few weight classes if he redshirted and put on horsepower.

If you watch the matches, they are usually pretty controlled. He just doesn’t open it up much, he’s been that way his whole career
