I really struggle with the questionable takes that PSU is so deep that their backups would be a hammer of a team.  Here are the backups and they aren't sniffing a podium finish based on where they are today - not with a year of training, right now!  Likely to develop and have some good careers, but these guys are not hammers this year!

125 - Garcia - DNP

133 - Ono - at best 4-7 range, 133 is a loaded weight class

141 - Desmond - 8, likely R12

149 - Pierce - 6 - 8, likely R12

157 - Kasak - 3 (I put Kasak here because this score more points than a DNP Sealy at 157 and a 7/8 finish for Kasak at 165)

165 - Beckett - DNP

174 - Henkel - DNP

184 - Cunningham - DNP

197 - Mirasola - 7/8

285 - Cochran - DNP

Based on this, scoring optimistically looks like 45 - 55 points.  Based on Flo rankings today, that puts PSU's backup team in contention with Cornell, Lehigh and NC State on the optimistic side.

Henckel would place at 174. He’d place at 184, too. He would kill the lower-AA-ranked guys at both weights.

Kazak is clearly s 1-4 at 157... putting him as a 7/8 at 165... why not put Desmond as a 1-4 at 125 then?

Oh wait you don't want people discussing how a PSU Bench team would perform... yet you go make your predictions on how a PSU bench team would perform...

His own coach said 125 is a pull for him and he'd have trouble making it on back to back days.  His record is at 141 so that is where I slotted him.

Discuss all you want, but put some realistic thought to it instead of shooting from the hip.

Sure but his coach also said "Suriano is wrestling downstairs" right now. Also thats after packing on a bunch of lbs to fill in at 141. If Desmond was the starter from the get go, which is what the scenario is calling for he likely would have managed and maintained himself being at 125 for atleast this season. This 100% is putting in "realistic thought" where as your assumption of keeping him at 141 is more so "shooting at the hip"

Sanderson did not say wrestling, he said drilling. Fault the reporters for not asking the obvious clarification question.

And you know this how?

Forrest/Andreu Ortega came down to a late third period TD and while a good freestyler, Andreu Ortega isn't in the same universe as Ono.

Because they put a 25/33 lber out there at 141 instead of his world beater highness instead

We could look at it like this too though -

125 - Desmond AA

133 - Ono AA

141 - Qualifier

149 - Pierce Fringe AA

157 - Kasak /Sealey 1-3 VS AA

165 - Kasak / Sealy AA vs Fringe AA

174 - Henckel - Top 5

184 - Cunningham - Low AA

197 - Mirasola - AA

285 - Qualifier

8 All Americans for Backups seems pretty damn solid.

Crazy ..Henckel beat the 2x D3 national champ last year while he was still in high school

Since this is a speculative thought exercise, I'd say that if PSU's backups WERE starting they would be getting all the matches and adjustments that their starters get. So all those DNPs become placers and everybody else in the lineup moves up in the rankings.

Who was not a starter on his high school team.  Let that sink in.

Who Lackman? I knew he beat his brother in the national finals , I wasn’t aware he didn’t start in high school. Either way he’s a had a heck of career and has chance to become a 3xer this year

Hold on:  I'm trying to remember which Lackman it was that Henckel beat.  If he beat the one from Rhode Island College, that guy was a great story, great D3 kid... but was never more than a spot starter on his high school team (Bethlehem Catholic).

it was the Rhode Island college one , I also was a bit mistaken , he was d3 champ in 22 and 23 for Rhode Island took a year off then placed second last year for Alvernia. He’s now exhausted his eligibility.

I had no idea he wasn’t a starter I’m always a fan of those stories. I had an assistant coach who started wrestling his jr of high school , never made it out of districts but kept wrestling into college and ended up a 2x AA

Read what his brother had to say before calling that a "favor".  The midgets screwed him over royally.

Guys with blogs on the internet never exaggerate or ambush for clicks

Oh I did.  He screwed himself over tbh... nor was he ever in the plans.  Burned a backups redshirt- not a huge deal, especially after he burned his own redshirt multiple times.

Henckel beat the 184 Mantanona 10-0, 10-0 this past summer. In free, but ok. Also won the Southern Scuffle. I think he would AA this year if he started for Penn State. He's good enough and the coaching staff is the best. It all makes sense.

Some private schools are so deep that not being a starter might just mean you are stuck behind even more amazing talent.  Not being a starter at Beth Catholic is an example but there are others.  Gabe Arnold didn't have a spot in Wyoming Sem's lineup his senior year so he transferred out, Sam Herring is spending his senior season training in State College because there really wasn't a spot for him in McCort's lineup.

Gabe Arnold transferred to be in Iowa his senior year. Dom Federici was the 175 after he left Wyoming Sem. Kolby Franklin was the one who left because he didn't have a spot.

You should as well.

125 is the hole.  Everyone else is contending for AA spots with some contending for a title (Ono, Kasak, Henckel).

That looks very realistic to me, I follow PSU pretty closely... I would think if Sealy went 57 he could AA 3-7 ish and Kasak at 65 could finish in the top 3.  The rest of your predictions look solid.  I believe Henckel & Cunningham will be competing for championships in a couple of years.  Ono at 33 next year could be the favorite.

Sorry bro, but no way would Ono be contending for a title this year.  The post was based on swap out the backups right now and put them in, not develop them for a couple of years, not by the end of their career - today.

Sealy has no quality wins and would not AA at this year's 157.  Kasak yes at 157, at 165 likely AA behind Caliendo and Lockett.  Henckel could AA just maybe but not in the hunt for a title this year.
