California far exceeds any other state in wrestling participation at the youth and HS level, however they have so few opportunities at the college level. Stanford and Poly are tough schools to get into and are pretty spendy. Cal Baptist was also pretty spendy as a private school. Cal Bakersfield has managed to stay open somehow.

They also dropped men's golf and men's swimming and diving.  That's California for you.

I really believe if we want to expand college wrestling, we need to look at MMA hotbeds so prospective wrestlers could train both.  A place like FIU, FAU or Miami would be easy to recruit to with the ability to tie into the South Florida MMA scene.  Or New Mexico with that MMA training mecca.

Mark Munoz was on staff last season and runs his own club that trains both...there are a lot of opportunities in So Cal to train MMA... For CBU we all know this is about funding.

MMA is huge in LA.  Many on my kids wrestling team also do BJJ.

They would still be going strong if Cael hadn't poached Mesenbrink

Are we sure it wasn't Carl and Messenbrink?  🤔

Curious how many times have Cael & Tom traveled (non poach trips) to the west coast to wrestle duals the last say five years?

Both teams have traveled to Oregon State to wrestle - Iowa last season and PSU the season before. PSU went out to WYoming this season. I can't remember any recent trips to California for either team.

That is a good start. We all know that Tom & Cael need a west coast swing EVERY season. It IS vital to our sport. I remember when Lofthouse was on the roster at Iowa, they would go out to Utah (his home state) and wrestle UVU & I think Wyoming too. It was at a "neutral site" in eastern Utah.

This sort of thing should have been going for a long time. Back when UC Davis, (Coach Moore from CBU won an NCAA title at UC Davis) BYU, Boise State, and Oregon all had programs. I am not saying that it would have saved any of these programs, but it would have been great for the sport.

Hearing that the cop out is that CBU wants all their sports to align with their new conference, the Big West.  Cal Poly is already there and they are affiliate members of the Pac12 for wrestling.....Utah Valley also just joined the Big West, but when your president is your biggest fan and your program is on the rise, you aren't going anywhere. A school is easily able to be an affiliate in a different conference. They were on the list to be a Pac12 team, which would have been a perfect fit and cut down on costs.

CBU is already a Big 12 affiliate and could have remained one or been a Pac 12 affiliate like you said

I hate to see it but expect more Olympic sports being dropped. Its not title 9 it's the NL and dropping enrollment. With women's wrestling exploding title 9 is not an excuse any more.

Leaders from the women’s wrestling community with good communication skills should take the baton from the spineless men and start getting in front of the decision makers of the sport. They got a good story to tell plus women are typically better at convincing woosified men to do what they want. I say send the ladies to the networks to demand more coverage after they convince a few admins from various schools sitting on the fence why they should promote and build the sport and not cut it.

Wyoming is not "the West coast".

Iowa and PSU traveling West for matches is good for the schools. Traveling to schools that aren't competitive may be nice to watch at times but doesn't help your guys much. Just practice that isn't much of a challenge.

It sounded to me, at least initially, like the AD was blaming the Big West for the cuts, even though they have golf and swimming & diving. Wrestling could have continued its affiliation with the Big12 or move to the Pac if it wanted to. Also kinda wild that football isn't driving the cuts

Sucks. Wish more schools embraced Wrestling. Started more Women’s programs that might help keep Men’s programs.

I interpreted the ADs short comments as more we’re focusing our resources (money) on other sports (basketball) - they don’t have much to play with, they don’t do big time football but if they can focus on basketball and make the tourney every couple of years, that’s athletic success as Cal Baptist.
Whatever it is, it’s a shame.

Off topic - kind of - but my recent fever dream was The Big Ten forces the west coast newbies who came in last season to start wrestling programs as conditions of entry. Oregon and Washington both used to have programs and I’m sure USC and UCLA could be successful with all the wrestling talent in CA. A guy can dream right??
