I was debating about this with a friend of mine today. He thinks that Bo was over hyped and that his legacy is mostly what could have been. I disagree, Bo was an All Star in two major sports at the same time, and there are plenty of people who he played with or against who admit how physically talented he was.

I’ll always remember the play he took a handoff, ran over two defenders, and ran a 92 yard touchdown.  They clocked the time from the second he got the ball (which of course would have been behind the 8 yard line, to the time he crossed the goal line, in 7.6 seconds.

95 yards, full pads, running over two people, edging toward the sideline……in 7.6 seconds.

He also hit monster home runs, climbed walls to steal home runs, throw runners out with laser beam accurate throws, and broke bats over his head.

Best athlete of all time. He’s both cases of has done and could have been. The freak injury cost a lot.l, but he still did a lot.

I knew Bo Jackson and you are no Bo Jackson!!!!

I was not really a Bo fan.   But I loved that he ran over Bosworth.   Just wrecked him.

From wikipedia:

Later that season, prior to the Seahawks' second matchup with the Los Angeles Raiders, Bosworth publicly claimed that he was going to "contain" Raiders running back Bo Jackson. During a red zone play, Jackson received a hand-off and powered through Bosworth's attempted tackle to score a touchdown. According to Jackson, when he and Bosworth got to their feet after the play was over, he told Bosworth, "Next time, have bus fare," infuriating Bosworth.[14] The Raiders went on to win that game, 37–14, thanks in part to Jackson's 3 touchdowns and 221 rushing yards.[15]

Just wrecked!  Obviously Bo went after Bosworth and won that battle.

The number of times he just destroyed big nasty linemen and linebackers who tried to tackle him, then outran defensive backs........but it was a shoestring tackle that ended his career.🤦‍♂️

If only Nike had made velcro shoes then.

The guy claimed he wasn't big into lifting weights...

He was a true genetic freak!

I believe it. I forgot where I saw it, but there was a story about how Bo hated to play basketball and would always avoid it or get out of it somehow. Then one day his PE teacher or whoever it was saw him alone in the gym after class and he picked up a ball and completely flat footed dunked it, then just walked away. Anyone who can do that probably doesn't need to lift.

Looked like one of those natural 2% body fat freaks.

I'd agree with your friend.

I don't think he ever had 1000 yards. I know he had a year with like 33 HRs, but a low BA.

He was on the verge. Could have easily popped off a few 1500-2000 yard seasons and it wouldn't have surprised me or he could have hit 50 HRs, but he got hurt before he could have.

Deion ended up being the MUCH better two sport star.

This one always gets me. You have a 240 LB RB going downhill and a LBer coming at an angle to meet him.

I mean, Bo was INCREDIBLY powerful. He ran over dudes... but a smaller RB is going to win that battle most of the time. It'd be more shocking if Bo was stopped there.

I just think that was so infamous because Bo was a huge name and Bosworth was a huge name, both were very high picks. Boz started out strong, had that shoulder injury(this is before I would have actually watched it, but I have watched the 30 for 30 on why it was so big).

Mainly though, people were in awe of Bo and disliked Bosworth.

I still think that's the most overhyped play in NFL history. There are times Atwater met Bo in the hole and Bo just ran through him. That's more impressive. Atwater coming downhill, squared up, full head of steam and Bo just hitting the hole and putting the 6'3 225LB Atwater on his back?

Are we EXEPCTING this LBer to make the tackle here without Bo gaining more yards?

He didn't play full time football though. And he also shared carries with Marcus Allen. So it isn't surprising he didn't get to the 1000 yard mark because he only played 2/3 of the season. Al Davis let him finish the baseball season and then report in September or October. Deion was much better in football, because he skipped baseball in some years. Bo didn't have a good start, because he refused to play football after the Buccaneers tanked his college baseball season, and spent the next few years playing baseball out of spite. He only played for the Raiders because Al Davis let him play baseball and didn't put any restrictions on what he could do. That he was able to be an elite player in both sports early on, and was just getting started, that shows how good he was. One of the MLB scouts who watched him in college said the only thing he needed was to play more baseball and the rest would figure itself out. He also ran track at Auburn and was an NCAA qualifier. So he was definitely capable of being great, it was just whether he wanted to be or if he had enough practice. The story for him in high school was he won the decathlon pole vault event, but he had never practiced it before and his high jump record stood for many years, and still might. I know it's high school, but that's pretty impressive for a guy built like that.

But what do we know of his swimming accolades?  Asking for a friend.  😉
