If it is within 4 weeks of final x I think this is fine I would like the best guy on the team. However, If this gets pushed into late July early August I have to wonder if he is that compromised if it worth sending him without adequate training time.

Someone in Twitter said they can delay it until 2 weeks prior to worlds

If Arujau beats Jax, then how much training time he had is irrelevant, right?

No.  It's two weeks prior to the Worlds acclimation camp.  We've seen our teams head over a few days in advance or a couple weeks in advance (and everything in between).

A lot depends on location, which is Croatia this year.  I can't imagine more than a week, as our USAW has planned around Croatia many times the last cycle or two - unless they head to Poland or Germany, etc. for a team camp prior to Croatia?

Not sure, really.  I would assume that we'll know mid-August at the latest.

I would say yes within reason. If he is injured to an extent where wrestling a series, then sets him back another few weeks I am not sure. At that point though Jax is probably not bringing home a medal if he still cannot beat Vito. I think it just hurts the world teams training cycle a bit although I don't know how much a world team camp really matters in the grand scheme of things with how good RTC's are now.

I second above- it really depends. I remember in 2018 USAW called me about being team translator for Greco for their camp which was held in a small city named Tata, about 50km outside of Budapest, to which I responded, "Wait, we have a Greco team?" I didn't get a second call back! haha! 🤣

I bring this up because I vaguely remember their camp starting 3 weeks before the actual tournament (Budapest, Hungary), but it varies year to year based on a bunch of factors.

I'm feeling very old.  The last camp I was in was at the OTC in 1998.  Camp was the first week in August.  Championships were 8/27-8/30 in Sweden.  I know things are a lot different now, and I'd imagine they are acclimating in Europe three weeks prior.  At least, I'd hope.

It is a good rule, and overall, I think the current qualification rules strike the right balance between giving all athletes a fair chance to make the team and making sure the team is as strong as possible — mindful that the latter goal involves a level of solicitousness to the top guy, eg returning medalists.

It’s easy to say you don’t like it, until Burroughs or Taylor in their heyday get a random sprained ankle days before Final X and everyone is outraged that we allowed such a little injury, which would have been gone long before Worlds, keep us from having a potentially championship team.

Plus the athletes have a say in making the policy, and they like it as is.  If they didn't like the policy, they can get rid of it.

We need to understand that this isn't a random tournament; it is the selection process.  We want to get the best team to Worlds.

I do not pretend to know exactly what is wrong with Vito, but if the injury is serious enough to force a delay, who's to say it won't come back before the Worlds? I still think it's wrong.

Dunno if it matters too much. Both guys will be on our national team no matter what, and will continue to train as if they were going to go. Same as the second place finishers in the other weights.

Who is to say it is even a super serious injury? It could be a sprained ankle or a broken hand or pulled hamstring. All of which will be plenty healed in time for worlds. If it is serious enough to come back before World's, then Jax will end up being the replacement.

It is an interesting question to me. I know they want to give a guy a chance to compete, but everyone has had the Final X date for a while. Sometimes you get injured, and it is at the wrong time. I know you want to send the best team but the process is already shifted to favor past medalists.

I am not sure how I feel about it.

Past medalists  have proven themselves and get the benefit of the doubt.   Sometimes it works out, sometimes not.   The only problem I have with a delayed final like this is that it robs those who bought tickets to the event of seeing some great matches.   But I do not have a problem with the situation other than that.

We need to remind ourselves repeatedly that this is not a random tournament but a team selection process with rules that representatives of the athletes have agreed upon.  We aren't going to change the rules at the drop of a dime because we feel a certain way; nor are we going to treat this like the Afton quadrangular (ie be there at 10AM ready to weigh in and take the mats, healthy or not!)

Worth remembering that Burr showed up as scheduled on Jully 11th.  He did not delay the contest.
