This sounds crazy but I have some reasoning for it.

This move will make sure that HS recruits really give a good thought into their decision and not just pick PSU because its PSU. When you have a blue chip recruit like Zack Ryder and bring in someone to replace him, it shows that Cael will do anything to try and make his lineup better, and therefore bring in someone else.

Personally, if I were Braeden Davis or Aaron Nagao, I would be pissed. For Davis, he just came off of an All-American finish, and Nagao has always been promising, and what do they get for that? They get replaced by an international World Champion.

If anything, this offseason will create a lot more parity in wrestling which is what people wanted in the first place, or it will create a monopoly, we'll just have to see how it turns out.

I'm happy that Ryder is moving on, he got snaked by the coaching staff.

lmk thoughts on this, this is just me jotting down my thoughts

That's literally every top program now excluding Cornell

Fair enough. I was more referring to recruits of Ryder’s caliber being replaced by someone a little bit better.

Forgot to say welcome to the forum.  Hope you stick around.  Only advice is to stay away from that @ionel fella.  He'll get you thrown behind bars at the Zoo

Nah, look at what they JUST got in terms of recruits? They just added that 65/74 pounder who was the #3/#4 recruit behind Bassett/Forrest and then debatably Ross(I'm a big fan of Ross, so I'd say Ross) and they have PJ Duke, Henkel, Cunningham and others coming in.

It's really clear guys just want to be in that room that badly).

Yes, it’s a business. These coaches need/want to win, period. It’s literally their job to win, and if they don’t win they get fired (or at least some do, wrestling actually doesn’t like firing coaches like the big sports do, but the point is the same). So if they have to recruit someone that gives them a better chance to win, they’ll do it and won’t think twice about it.

Nagao was a bit more than promising... also an All-American

No - most coaches wouldn't bring in a transfer that makes them 2% better at the weight (maybe not even that) but risks damaging the team chemistry and their reputation for future recruits.

The coaches at the top programs absolutely will.  Caliendo bumped Kennedy who some project might not make the roster next year. Or Arnold doesn't make the lineup which is a direct result of Brands bringing in a portal guy. Good chance DT snags Ryder which potentially bumps Brayden Thompson out of the lineup.

Well, Cael did do it and he's a top coach so you're right to that extent. Some coaches may be reluctant based on long term consequences of this practice.

It'll be an interesting to see if this impacts PSUs current team and future recruiting. I know Cael's done this before (e.g. Max Dean) but this move is higher profile and getting more publicity.

@Fletcher and others are criticizing the practice of recruiting over a guy who is a contender with a guy who might be "2% better" in his words. PSU (fans at least) looked at Ryder as a title contender. Kennedy was R16 when they brought Caliendo in.

If memory serves me correctly that had a lot more to do with how the backside broke for Kennedy getting Julian Ramirez vs Caliendo getting a much more favorable path to all american.  Context is relevant

That's fair! If you're a title contender though, you will find a way to AA imo
