I'm not seeing it, and I doubt you are either.  I see a lot of people whining about PSU fans not wanting to go, but I don't see any actual PSU fan saying "we shouldn't go."  I'm sure there's a couple if you hunt around long enough, but the "Locked On" people want them to go, Byers wants them to go (see video here (here), every PSU fan I know wants them to go. We are seeing it. On this forum, on Twitter, on Youtube, on the Penn State boards. It's not even that PSU fans are actually against it. They just see whatever Cael says or does, and then backfill justifications to support Dear Leader.

To be fair I'd emphasize that there are only a few (not so many) non-PSU fans of THIS forum that can be routinely counted on to make over-the-top whiny jealous little bitch anti-PSU posts in this thread and others.

I do wonder how long they can hold out, though.  If this ends up being a big and popular event, with all the top teams, then PSU will be even further behind than they already are in the number of competitions their guys get.  It could be a tiebreaker in recruiting too.  Can't imagine the guys on the team are thrilled about being left out either. Hopefully the event's a big success and Cael gives in next year.

I think you actually have it right in the second paragraph. I saw a video clip somewhere of Cael saying something to the effect of this being a re hash of long held arguments that he doesn't think make sense. Not those exact words of course, but that sort of meaning. 

I don't think they will have any issue filling comp dates.

Not trying to be a dick on the wrestling page, but it only takes a little effort to read themat.com and other sites.  Why depend on someone else to gain your knowledge for you?  The list of PSU athletes wrestling in the age group and senior trials is neither short, nor hard to find. 

That said, PSU isn't the only school with kids trying to make teams....they just have more with legitimate shots.

My take is that Sanderson understands or at least believes that there is a group of folks who would really like to change the way this sport settles national championships. My take is that he believes these types of events just promote those ideas and he doesn't want to participate in that promotion.

I don't have a problem with the sponsor being mentioned.  Don't bowl games do that?

But it is 100% a National Invitational.  The top teams in the NATION were INVITED, and this includes PSU.

You'd think PSU might be interested in the cash prize, as the program loses the university money every year. (as does every other D1 wrestling program)

Might (probably) forgot someone. U23 is always a domestic and international crapshoot... some years Hendrickson is the man, other years Richie Lewis is the world champ.

ETA: Lilledahl will probably get better domestic and international competition at juniors

 

Blaze, PJ Duke, and Kasak are all U20 eligible and all own Cadet and/or Junior world medals. Might be inclined to try again.

Masa Ono also exists. I believe he has a couple of world medals, too. Likely wants more.

Idk man, you might be overthinking it. Carl likes to keep things simple and he doesn't care about anything except for NCAAs (and trials/Worlds/Olympics on the RTC side). He doesn't care about duals or Big Tens, even though he's probably contractually incentivized by it, or preseason tournaments. It's all noise between him and postseason hardware. Bro has his guys so singularly focused on NCAAs (and probably religion and winning in life or something) that National Duals is just another distraction.

Maybe there could be more attractive economic incentives or bigger implications for postseason seeding or something, but it doesn't seem like there are a lot of levers one could pull to sway his thinking. It's just how he is.

Only PSU declined. I think VaTech is finishing paperwork or something, but Willie said they're in. The final five spots will go to teams that finished 13-24.
