Both can choose to go to an opposing team to get paid more money. The pro athlete has to sign a contract and abide by the contract. Right now, the Pro college athlete doesn't have to sign a contract. That just seems illogical to me. Where do you get the college athlete doesn't have to sign a contract? I had to sign a contract. In fact I had to sign a new contract every year. They are one year contracts. In terms of the legal and administrative dynamics, they are beyond an apples to oranges comparison. On the athletic side of things, yes they are both athletes, yes there financial transactions involved. But this topic is about the legal and administrative side of things. So the chains were unlocked. And now it’s as fundamental as America itself. Free market. Individual Liberty. I was more for across the board set stipends for all athletes very similar to the stipends they have at the military academies.

At the end of the day, it's better if its a free market. A lot of the issues we are seeing will work themselves out over a longer period of time.

Just would be turning college sports into a full blown pro league essentially. We may already be there

You only signed a one year contract. But most athletes in wrestling are in college for 5 years. I guess I am old school. If I recruit an athlete for the 5 years. I would like him to stay for 5 years. Let's say he comes my school, and he redshirts. Then we put a lot a time and effort into helping him to develop into and all-American by his sophomore year. If someone else now wants him ok. I will put a cash value on what the school and my coaching staff have put in in developing the athlete in the 3 years he was with us i order to be compensated. It just seems like fair value marketing to me.

But five years ago the rules were stupid. We all said so then, so why romanticize it now? Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

It would be a good idea for some intelligent people to take a hard look at where we are and what can be done to improve it.

I was for across-the-board stipends,(to start with) that are very similar to what the military academies have been getting for years. Try it for a few years then access things and see what can be done better.

This situation is entirely of the NCAA's own creation, but I agree the current situation sucks as a fan. 1 1 You are a voice of reason. - @Paul158

warren_haynes Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Every time that any of this has ended up in court, the result has been the same. If these are students, then there is no legal way to stop them from making money or to stop them from attending whatever school they want. The only way that they could implement any changes would be to make them employees of the universities. 1
warren_haynes Posted March 28 Posted March 28 I'm also seeing a lot of right wingers complaining about "fair" and there not being enough "parity." Folks, that is the E in DEI. If you want a merit based society, quit complaining about fair. This is capitalism. There will always be winners and losers. Salary caps are just socialism and DEI.

If you sign a contract to receive something (an education) ( value a lot) for your service for a year. You have to abide by said contract or you can lose your compensation. That sounds like an employee to me.
