Bo Nickal quit for the same reason why the vast majority of wrestlers eventually quit. He wasn't good enough to win at the level he needed to in order to continue wrestling . He lost at team trials, naturally that was his end.  No one would hold it against him if he came back for a Cinderella run at some team trial.
What Gable did is very rare (and demeaning to wrestling). The only comparison that is coming to my mind is Borg retiring from tennis at 26. But Gable's case is even worse than Borg's, since Borg was not at the very top of the tennis world when he left. He had just lost in the most important tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon, after being a defending champion with a long winning streak and then lost again at the US Open (which he never won) to the same person.

I think I now see why I’m struggling to see the outrage. I don’t view someone doing something else with their life, regardless of how good they are at what they’re currently doing, as demeaning it. Sometimes people just want to do something else especially at 22 years old.

I think it’s perfectly rational to not like Gable because of his personality, his off the mat behavior, his choice of school, whatever. I can see and understand those reasons, I don’t think I even like him very much personally.

But hating him for taking two seasons off to explore other avenues is odd to me.

The villain?  Where you seeing that?  Some wackjobs on this board?  Come on.  Get your head out of your forum posting ass.

People love the underdog. And Wyatt hype has been built up.  Was fun and exciting to see the underdog beat the champ.  No hate on Gable.

I get some may not be big fans of Gable.  I’m not one.  But villain?  That’s ridiculous.

I don't think it's outrage. I just think it's natural to not root as hard for someone in wrestling when clearly don't like/value wrestling as much as other wrestlers.

I personally don't follow college wrestling much, I'm just speculating on why this guys I know about from international wrestling is getting the reactions he is.

Edit: BTW I do not agree with you.

I don't really follow mainstream sports so I was mainly going off the sports that I do know, but yes that's big a counter example I was wrong about that. Though my guess is that it's still rare (maybe I'm wrong but that's my guess).

And I don't agree with you on whatever you disagree with me on, I think.

Also I think if Gable made a clean break with wrestling and left and that was that it, fine, but that he fell flat on his face on not one but two other endeavors and then comes "crawling back" to wrestling because of NIL money.

Is it not a very human reaction for parts of the wrestling community to have a feeling of schadenfreude over that trajectory?

About the "I had a WWE dream". He tried football and is probably leaving for mma. So I think the the he doesn't value wrestling as much theory is backed by a lot of evidence and it's not just an obsession with WWE.

How he treated the ott/wtt teams was pretty trashy imo.

if the rumor of what he said to Wyatt before the match is true that’s also pretty trashy.

I’m confused by this line of thinking. So if tomorrow Bo Nickal decided he actually wanted to make a run at the world team next cycle, should we all root against him?

Mitch McKee went MMA after college. If he wanted to wrestle at the US Open next year, is he instantly a villain?

They left because they weren't the guy. Gable left because he believed he was destined to be bigger than a star within the wrestling community.

Bluegold, you’re more blue than any gold placing you on the bottom rung of humanity. Reduced to sitting in a chat room for long hours targeting those enjoying life at a much higher level than you could ever dream of. I bet you know the manufacturer of every light fixture in every gymnasium you ever competed in.

The irony of someone quote responding to themselves while sitting in a chat room apparently for long hours...

I didn’t even comment anywhere on this thread and your lame, racist ass is here thinking about me. The old geezer incel of a guy sitting in a chat room all day talking about other people who aren’t even on here and likely has done nothing as a wrestler other than lose is talking about me talking about other people, and that other person I spoke of was your President, the guy on who uses the media to talk about other people. The irony.

You seriously don't think most people would root against Bo Nickal if he came back?

Maybe because he is a Penn State guy and people are tired of their dominance.

I’d like to see him come back.  I think we need him on the world stage.

I'm a big fan, but wrestling fans do not really embrace Bo.  He's a terrible example to use to try to question why fans weren't on Gable's side last night (I also love Gable).  Wrestling fans don't love wrestlers who leave wrestling early.

I get it, my love of Gable dropped.  But I don’t dislike him and don’t root against him.  Fairly irrational to hate a guy for taking some risks and trying to succeed as they define it.

I was trying to think of wrestlers who are competing in other sports and he was the first to come to mind, but you’re right him specifically wasn’t a good example lol. Sorry.

Steveson literally won a Gold Medal for the United States in dramatic fashion and did a victory lap with the Stars and Stripes draped on his back not too long ago.

Yet last night it was Hendrickson who was called “Captain America”, came out with the flag and was loudly cheered by all upon defeating Gable.

It was almost like Gable was from China or something. Odd to see a U.S. Olympic hero turn into the bad guy so quickly.

why do you think this?

I mean, i always cheer when someone does something amazing.

But, I also felt for Gable, watching him on his knees on the mat. looking around... searching...

I can recognize that my cheering against GS was mostly due to jock sniffing media. They latch on and try to build a narrative and for me that makes me want to go in the opposite direction.
