1) Whoever beats Starocci this year

2) some say Gable lost in a shocking final, but many say this is just rumour from the woke crowd

3) one of the Banachs lost to one of the Schultzes (Ed to Mark if memory serves)

4) Dick DiBatista's first NCAA title was a shocker from what I heard over an AAU champ

5) Some guy from Penn State beat Steveson before the pandemic (except he beat him before that too)

This is the correct answer. It was a shock in every way, Caldwell was such a creative guy.

Caesar beat Gable in the semis, not the finals

Lehigh's Rob Rohn was trailing 14-2 late in the third period and mixered OK's Josh Lambrecht for the fall in 2002.  4 pins in a row in the NCAA championships.

Didn't Caldwell beat him earlier that season (by fall)?

Saw that - Rohn was unstoppable with that move.  Lehigh should have had Trenge suck down and he would have beatn Lambrecht easily and had Rohn bump up and take out Sanderson for his 4th title. Even Sanderson could not defend the Rohn cement mixer in Albany!

I'm pretty sure that was the prior season (the spladle).

Earlier that season, Metcalf teched Caldwell, but it was in the all-star dual so it didn't "count".

he was referencing Owings/Gable, not Cassar/Steveson (which he does to close).

Metcalf lost at least once per season every year he was allowed to wrestle so in retrospect losing to Caldwell, who he teched, wasn't that big of a surprise.

07 spladled by Caldwell during the season (champ)

08 lost to Caldwell in the finals (runner-up)

09 lost to Lance Palmer at B1Gs (champ)

i am an idiot on the internet

The way he had been hyped up leading into and during the tournament they acted as if it was the biggest upset of all time.

I gotta go with Lambrecht getting gator rolled while up 13 as most shocking.

Electrifying moment but not shocking as Rohn was a pinner and  had beat Lambrecht earlier in the season. He also was winning halfway through the 2nd we Lambrecht started titling him. It was surprising how easily Rohn got tilted.

I remember this vividly.  I was in this bracket in Albany.

He was a a pinner in that event but not really overall. He had his share (~17 over his 4 years and only 2 that season). Also, as far as I can recall, none by cement job. When I saw him cooling down after the semis, I told him he didn't have a cement job. He laughed and agreed. He said he hadn't really hit any successfully in the past.

  • A 13th ranked Cody Brewer dominating Cory Clark
  • Vincenzo Joseph pinning IMAR (then beating him again the following year)
  • Vito making RBY look like a scrub
  • Bubba pinning DT

Other nominees?

Arujaus total dominance of Crookman with the “pointing to the center of the mat” was a finals match I’ll never forget.

I wasn't in the bracket, but I was there.  Rohn's pin upstaged Sanderson's 159/0 imo.  It was an incredible comeback pi
