BJJ is low impact? So many of the old men who've had a black belt for 15 or 20 years have spinal fusions.

I'd say it's worse than wrestling because most people don't wrestle as long as people do BJJ.

I think BJJ is much lower impact.  Maybe they take it easy on me because I'm the oldest guy in the room. I know even the mild calisthenics at the beginning of practice nearly wipes me out, I'm in such bad shape! The folks are super nice as befits practitioners of "the gentle art".

My first BJJ practice I had to borrow an ill-fitting gi and everybody thought it was weird I was wearing wrestling shoes. I had to get permission to wear them because everybody else was barefoot. After the calisthenics the instructor started demonstrating a triangle choke (headlock to wrestlers) and choked out his partner! I couldn't believe it! I never saw a guy get choked out in wrestling practice (although I did choke out a guy with a perfectly legal headlock in HS on two different occasions). Also in BJJ you don't have to worry about back points! Like prostitutes, Jujitsuka do their best work on their backs.

Oh yeah, the best part is I'm better at taking people down than anybody in the room, even as a 60 year old! Seriously, didn't you just take to BJJ like a duck to water? I already know 90% of what they are teaching, just by different names.

It just seems soft based on the videos I see. They'll show someone who...is clearly a Wrestler and talk about what a "bad sport" he is because he's trying to handfight and...then gets choked out.

That and then the scooting on their rear like a dog with worms.

But I do know a lot of people still doing it when their 40. That wouldn't make it...not low impact.

I have family that does traveling softball for their teen… 15k/year per kid just to participate. Then travel and lodging costs plus enough job flexibility to work remotely and/or not work. Their team is dang good but wow that’s a huge barrier for entry.

You have to reckon the family is planning on their kid getting a scholarship to pay for it all someday. The sport I've seen the most about, regarding parents traveling so their kids can train, is probably gymnastics. I've heard of parents driving hundreds of miles a few times a week so their kids can be coached up by famous coaches.

No sarcasm. I believed Lisa, thought she might know something the rest of us don't. Why the picture, Kirk looks nothing like Chris or something?

By sarcasm, I meant on Lisa's part- not yours.

At 15K a year for 7 years (of MS and HS travel sports) is 105k plus interest .... better hope you are getting a nice scholarship to break even. Sometimes parents don't get it... we have 15k a year for softball but suddenly when you get to college we won't have it and you better get a scholarship.

On the gymnastics front, I had a girl in my class a long time ago who did Gym 6 days a week - cost them $350 per month for just practice - early 2000's prices. Add in the costs of travel, etc. and practice since she was 5 and you have a very large amount of money saved with interest. She told me she did it to get a college scholarship...uh...okay, did someone do the math with your parents? She quite gym by 10th grade because she was burned out and tired of not having a life.

Knox Jr. and Sr. pled not guilty to assault and purposely/knowingly causing bodily injury.

Don't the victims have the right to a speedy trial?

Pushing this off seems to indicate no.

Anthony Knox will forever have an asterisk attached to his name in the New Jersey wrestling history books.

Knox, one of only five wrestlers in state history to win four individual championships, had his fourth title stripped by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association on July 1.

An NJSIAA committee determined Knox was in violation of its Sportsmanship Policy for his involvement in a well-documented brawl in February of 2025. A panel voted 8-0 to revoke Knox of his state championship and Region 7 title.

Right decision. Can’t run into the stands and hit a minor. In life there are consequences for one’s actions. If he wasn’t a prominent wrestler, the penalty would have been harsher.

I believe in second chances. Hope he learns from his mistakes and wins multiple titles.

One of the tenets of issuing an injunction/TRO is that the petitioner is likely to prevail in his lawsuit. Have any of these cases ever ended without the wrestler being stripped of his title after suing to be allowed to wrestle?

I respect the concept, but this is dumb.  This isn’t like track and field.

He won the tournament after they made the decision to let him back in.  This is like “stripping” international wrestlers of medals 10 years after the fact.

Nobody takes it seriously, because the matches were actually wrestled.  You can’t go back and reconstruct the bracket.

"They" didn't make any decision to let him back in. It was decided by the courts.

How is track and field different assuming we’re referring to stripping titles after the race/event already happened?

I’m not sure how many of “these cases” there have been, but this is a good question.  Your post reminded me of the one in Wisconsin from a few years back.

So incident happened in 2019 where he was initially suspended but sued and was allowed to wrestle.

In 2021, he was stripped of his title.

In 2024, appeals court reversed it and gives title back.

In 2025, Wisconsin Supreme Court strips title again.

In the article I read here in NJ it mentioned the record books needing to add an asterisk.  The only way this will be meaningful whatsoever is to put him down in the record books as a 3 time champ.  There’s only been 5 four time champs including Knox.  I say the record books only contain 4.

Wisconsin also had a kid (eventually) become a four-timer after losing in the finals his sophomore year to a kid who had sued to get into the tournament and was subsequently stripped of his title.

I think because track, swimming, etc are (largely) non-reactive, time-based performances.  If someone in lane 8 runs 1/10th faster but popped hot on the test, and you ran the best time in lane 2, perfect, we just pretend lane 8 didn’t exist.

But wrestling’s tournament structure is a pyramid of interactions between competitors.  If you remove a pillar, then different dominoes would slide into place in each round, all the wrestlers who ran into that athlete have no recourse.

I think the best way to illustrate what irks me about this is who do you slide into 8th place if you bump everyone up one place?

I don’t think it is a bad decision in spirit.  I just think it is an ineffective paper-based mechanism that achieves little.

In the case of Knox are they calling the 2nd place guy the champ or is it just vacated?
