Interesting about Trump's Tarriffs threat

Hi all,

Mostly being reported is the fact that Trump wants to levy tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.   What is not being reported as much is his reasoning behind the tariffs.  And what is that?

He want's Canada and Mexico to stop illegal immigration into the US.   He wants Mexico and China to stop feeding the fentanyl epidemic.

It appears that Trumps Tariffs are having the desired effect of conversations with Canada and Mexico regarding immigration.   I suppose if they hold that down, the tariffs don't get put on them.   Interesting play. 

 

China could stop producing fentanyl or its components and shipping them to Mexico and be off the hook as well.   Again, interesting play here.   The tariffs are aimed at adjusting behavior regarding immigration and fentanyl, not trade disputes.

Yes, So  what you are saying is that you knew all about this already.   Do I have that correct?

Did you know the tariffs were aimed at immigration change and reduced fentanyl levels?   Did you know that the Canadian Prime Minister called Trump immediately?   Did you know the Mexican President called Trump almost immediately?   If you did, how did you find out?   Was it from WAPO, NYT, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, CNBC, NSNBC, Fox or somewhere else? 

The fact you did not say you already knew this leads me to think you did not know but want to argue so you are.  Yeah, I had to search for these articles, they did not just come up first thing in my search.   I heard about these on the radio and I was looking for source material.   Not much out there. 

I knew there would be pushback without citations.  Yet you found a way.    No comment on the message, just shoot the messenger.   Ad hominem attacks are not an argument.

I know you like to play prosecuting attorney, so I will play along. Yes, I already knew this. It was reported on the local ABC affiliate. All I had to do was turn on the TV. Actually my wife does that. But there it was. 

By the way, the fact that I say I know something should not lead you to believe I do not. It should lead you to the opposite conclusion because the words I used had very specific meanings. What upside down world do you live in?

Upside down?   Funny term for seeing the world the way it is. 

Trump got voted in partly due to immigration  issues and the worsening drug epidemic.   He's not even president and he's getting calls from Canada and Mexico offering support so they don't get hit with the tariffs.  That should be good news to anyone that lives in reality.

It has nothing to do with your second paragraph. You said I was lying. That is what I responded to.

Yes, I live in an upside down world that sees:

- people telling truth getting ostracized by their government and social media and media. 

- people getting jailed for exercising their first amendment rights

- people getting not jailed for rioting and looting because those are their first amendment rights

- adults advocating puberty blockers for minors possibly sterilizing them

- adults advocating surgical measures on minors to try to change their gender.   These same adults don't want a school nurse giving an aspirin or tylenol to a kid that's been hurt. 

- Government officials not working to find justice for victims of crime but rather try to keep the perps out of jail.

- Government officials that tell the unwashed masses that inflation is  down nothing to worry about as prices are up 20% and some things are even more.  

- Government officials going after political opponents using the courts to enforce their wishes (see the second item above)

- DOJ officials calling parents not having it at school board meetings domestic terrorists. 

That's the upside down world I live in.

The governments mentioned don't control the illicit drug trade or have anything to do with immigration to this country. It's basically like saying that if Hollywood doesn't stop letting gay people work on in movies that we are going to put a big tax on movie theater tickets. 

Mexico can't really do anything for various reasons. This is going to go very badly and the people who will really suffer are the ignorant clods who thought voting for Trump was a good idea.

Short of Mexico deploying their military to the border, which is as impractical as us doing it, no you are not going to stop people from doing it. Even if you did that, people would figure out a way around it. Which is why the whole "seal the border" makes no sense. I don't think people realize what doing something like that would actually do, and it would go very very badly for a lot of people.

Ostensibly the point of border patrol is to make sure people who don't have a visa or anything don't come into the country. Which is fine if you have say a hostile neighbor. Instead we're just villainizing desperate poor people who are mostly looking to avoid living in extreme poverty. So we are wasting money and resources to protect us from people who want to come here to do menial jobs? 

And I'm sure you'll say that drugs and trouble come across. I'm sure that along people willing to risk their life to come here and wash dishes at Olive Garden, some have probably less than sterling criminal histories. Drugs on the other hand, the huge majority come through legal ports of entry. So even if you could stop a few enterprising people who think lugging a 50 pound pack of drugs across an unforgiving desert is a good idea, you wouldn't make a dent in drugs coming into this country. The days of guys like Sal Maglua, Jon Roberts, Willy Falcon, Mickey Munday, etc are long over.

That explains why you are such a giant PITA to discuss with. That's a lot of upside down for you to carry.

I've done you a favor. You can stop worrying about the first (5) that I put in bold. They aren't worth our time:

1. "Truth" will always vary, depending on the speaker. "Truth" is as likely a lie as it isn't. Dismiss this one.
   1. This will never change. There will always be nuts with their nutty 'truth'. No matter what.
2. Getting jailed for first amendment rights is highly unlikely. More likely something else was involved. Dismiss it.
3. Not getting jailed for protesting is a good thing... a VERY good thing. Protects us from dictatorship. Dismiss it.
   1. Note: Rioters and looters should be arrested be careful not to lump them together as the same group.
4. Adults advocating puberty blockers for minors and possibly sterilizing them is a scare tactic. Dismiss it
5. Adults... blah, blah... gender changing. More scare tactics. This isn't actually happening anywhere. Dismiss it.

this is why we can't take certain people on the left as serious. you just lie to make excuses for a failed agenda so your side wasn't 'wrong'. 

you campaigned on it. you executed it. the pushback was then so overwhelming that it was the main cause of an election loss. so now you pivot to 'it's impossible'.

the first thing you need to do if you want your side to 'win' is to address your failures.

Tell me you're stupid without telling me you're stupid. 

This isn't some simple thing. Like if you go bald, you don't put a wig on and claim that it's real. Or if you're 5'7 you don't insist you're really 6'4. 

Where both sides are wrong is that there is a simple or easy fix to this. Trump makes the worst argument because he just plays to stupid people who believe things like Haitian immigrants eat pets, Mexicans are all drug traffickers and rapists (he launched his first presidential bid by saying that). 

We don't have a problem with illegal immigration. I'll maintain that opinion until something changes. Our problem is we're addicted to cheap and or illegal labor and employment. If that wasn't a possibility, then you would see it a lot less. 

As far as stopping people at the border, short of basically putting up various traps, and ordering the military to shoot people on sight, both of which would be violations of international law, you aren't going to stop people. You probably don't know, don't care and probably won't even read this far because you saw something bright and shiny, but poor and desperate people with little to lose who try coming here illegally aren't going to be easily discouraged. To them, coming here to wash dishes at Denny's is a lot better than what they could have hoped for wherever they come from. So to someone like that, they're going to find a way or die trying. The corpses of the unfortunate ones are scattered all across the Tohono O'odham reservation as proof of that. Have you ever found a dead and decaying dead body like that? I have. It's not pleasant and extremely sad.
