So far Intermat, Flo, and Wrestlestat have published their pre-season rankings.

  • Intermat has Ferrari #1 at 197
  • Flo has him #4 behind Stephen Buchannan, Jacob Cardenas, and Rocky Elam, but ahead of Stephen Little (UALR), Isaiah Salazar (Minn), Michael Beard (Lehigh), and Silas Allred (Neb).
  • Wrestlestat has him #67 behind a list too long to type.

I think putting him #1 is madness. Sure he has a national title, but I keep going back to my firmly held belief that no one gets better at wrestling by not wrestling. And the one time we saw him wrestle in the past several years he looked like a blood round guy, at best.

If it was me, I have to rank him just outside the top 8. He is somewhere between a freshman with no college results and no initial ranking, and someone with recent results I can lean on to make an informed ranking decision.

Hilariously, Intermat made his photo black and white because he is in an OSU singlet, but maybe it was an unintentional statement about how long ago that photo was taken.

I think you are correct, but its worth noting that he was way better when departed than he was when he won the title. He won almost figeruoa ugly, but by the next season was a dominant #1 ranked guy.

It has been so long since he competed, I don't know how you rank him. Anything you put out is a guess. He doesn't even have F/S results that you can extrapolate. I am not saying that he isn't likely a Top 8 guy at the weight but he probably needs to show it somewhat. The last we saw him he was beating Glazier with a last second takedown.

If you think any of the top 10 guys want to wrestle him, you are high. Ferrari, while being a total MFer, is a great wrestler. For the guy who says you don't get better at wrestling by not wrestling - you are right, but that applies to injured guys getting no mat time at all. Ferrari has been training, just not competing. It might take him 2 months to get his lungs and legs under him, but he will be a top 4 guy and a real threat to win it all again. He is listed as a redshirt sophomore on CSUBs website. He has a chance to be a 4 timer.

He had been off the mat a long time when he "beat" glazier, who didn't end the season well but looked like a high AA threat at the time.

Who is he working out with at CSUB? I thought I heard Anthony Valencia left, so I think his ceiling will be heavily dependent on workout partners.

Purdue/Oklahoma's Nachohouse is there.  A smaller guy, but I don't see anyone else on the roster that he could possibly break a sweat wrestling with.

Interesting. If they don't fill one of the assistant coach spots with a real guy at that size, it will be a limiting factor.

He posted a picture with ringer; I am not sure if Ringer is their full time, but he would obviously be a great partner. Outside of that I have no idea the do have two open Assistant positions right now.

I believe Ringer was there on an interview, FWIW.

67 is the team ranking for CSUB on wrestlestat.  AJ is #5

I think Flo has it about right at 4.  I wouldn't pitch a fit to have him more like 7 or 8 behind the likes of Little, Beard, etc.  Both are reasonable.  But yeah #1 is insane.

Like 3 business hours after Flo had him ranked pre season #1.  It’s almost like some sites are now more click bait than real.   I dunno.   Im crazy sometimes.

I really hate the way eligibility is going now. He wrestled at a TFR and wrestled 10 matches as a Soph. He should have two more years of competition remaining.

They really screwed up the COVID thing. If they were giving anyone an extra year it should have been graduating seniors because they missed their last chance. I hate that Starocci can wrestled this year. He got his 4 NCAA championships. He doesn't need to complete in a fifth.

Oh well no reason to carp about this. I just think about all those athletes in the past that only got three years of competition due to the rules and now Miami FL has a guy that is in his 9th season of college football and 26 years old.

100% - It benefited everyone except the wrestlers  it affected the most.

AJ has had Wick and Ringer in to work out with. There are two other 197 and two 285 in the room - not saying they are the ones who will push him, but he does have guys to work with. Don't forget about a guy that can coach him that may have had something to do with him going to CSUB... Stephen Neal.
