KOT @ 174

Is he the odds on favorite, despite losing to Haines in the consis at WTT, in freestyle? Does that result change anything? Are there any other young bucks who will provide a steep challenge to his quest for a 3rd title?

I'd still put him as the slight favorite.  I never trust backside results in a freestyle tournament but Levi is right there with him if he wrestles this year.  Interesting to see Hamiti go this year with Taylor as his coach.  It's wild that Hamiti and O'Toole have yet to face off in college unless I'm forgetting a match.  Rocco Welsh will be in the mix but at this point it's hard to gauge his ceiling.  Is old man Brands still talking about going 174?  He'll be a tough out for anyone at NCAA's.  Doubt Kennedy or Arnold will have much for Keegan.

How many minutes of riding time and nearfall points to Haines secure in the WTT match?

Haines also got whupped by Carr, who in turn got whupped by KOT. Yet none of the 3 matches were as lopsided as the scores suggest.

But don’t think Haines goes. I think the fact that PSU took him and Mirasola, and no one else, is a pretty good sign this is their redshirt year to focus on freestyle. I’m thinking we see Facundo and Barr.

Haines looked huge...I think 174 has been a foregone conclusion.

And I think he takes the title. KOT was more active but less efficient, and for that to work out he's gonna have to score fairly early, otherwise he's just wrestling Haines' match.

Haines matches up well against KOT in Freestyle.  Without the exposure threat KOT will be able to get to his scrambles in Folk.  A rematch would look a lot different.  I wouldn't put money on it.  Think it's a true toss-up

i don't think the scrambles are gonna be that different. You've got far ankle and Churella (I appreciate askren for calling it this because he was way better at it than ryan churella)which work in freestyle. Ankle passing is very dated, we've got danger calls in folk...I think its the same....maybe different in churella situations because in folk the refs will let you wrestle a little as opposed to blowing the whistle as often as possible?

First thing I thought of as well... the scrambles. Another match-up to look forward to.

o toole will look great all season but haines will smoke him when it counts. practice rooms matter. psu is unparalleled.

Ryder, Facundo, and Haines all at 174.  Barr will have to go 197 this year because of Starocci, but will come down to 184 next year. Ryder and Haines have RS available, but they are all young, so someone is gonna sit out during eligible years.

I understand why they recruit the way they do. I also get why kids go there when there is no lineup synergy. I just I think we are going to see the crazy levels of depth in recruiting come to a stop here soon as people get to see high AA level guys sitting and transferring out. It's gotta happen, right?

Keegan could not sit the corner on levi because levi was able to elevate him. Thats a position where Keegan sort of dominated Carr. Carr wrestled Levi primarily from space which hes able to do because hes so fast and slick. I dont know that Keegan can do that and effectively get to levis legs. I thought the match was not super competitive in favor of Keegan before this but now Im leaning levi I do not think folk makes a ton of difference. Keegan does make adjustments as well as anyone so I would say that is the x factor but as of now I have it 55:45 levi.

Fair point.  Levi's ability to stay heavy with his hips and use his strength is a problem for KOT.  Just not at the point calling Levi the clear favorite.

Facundo is already under 165lbs.  You think he is now going to decide to go back up to 174lbs?

Yeah in fairness to you my opinion of Haines is probably colored by P(su)TSD. Though he does seem like one of these Johny Hendricks types who just squashes scrambles, though guys like Perry were complete amateurs compared to what we have today.

Some schools can pay kids to sit on the bench. Some may be satisfied to hit a few opens, have a little spending money, not watching weight as close, and enjoying college life. Not a bad gig really.

He and I both told you that Alex Facundo has certified at below 165 lbs. You've now quoted both of us.

Why would Facundo be below 165lbs, at some point in the near past, if he is planning on going 174?

i always thought KOT looked huge.

now at 174, next to haines,,, who just came up from 157, he looks small, and get dominated.

and then haines gets beat by carr.
